“Achieve Stunning Success With A Natural Aquarium - Guaranteed!" This video details an extraordinary learning experience. To set up a Father Fish aquarium begin by creating a dirted aquarium bed using Father Fish’s soil mixture. This provides nutrients for plants. Next cap the soil with 2" of sand. THIS IS CRITICAL! Sand protects the soil from leeching into the water.
Now, place driftwood and rocks for hiding spots and decoration in the aquarium.
When adding water place a bowl or plastic bag on the sand so it does not get disturbed. Finally, choose plants such as stem plants which are fast growing and able to feed in a new system.
Fish prefer a natural aquarium. Your aquarium operates best when all of these elements are present. Planted aquariums are not just for advanced hobbyists. Dive into the deep substrate system and discover how easy it is!

Thank you for the compliment Father Fish. Our substrate methods are not too dissimilar as well. I like to create a tank that looks for presentable to the masses from the front panel, so I always keep it very shallow at the front, but after that, it's nice and deep, full of nutrients and capped with sand. This is also a good way of creating the illusion of a "snapshot" of nature as you don't see a layer of nutrients if you go underwater. I also agree with you about nature being random (to a degree) in it's placement and it's something I'm trying to be more conscious of when scaping (ironically thinking about trying to be more random 😂).

I can’t explain like the way Father fish explains, but ever since I added sand to cap the existing gravels, nitrates changed from the awful RED to BROWN to YELLOW. You know what I mean when I say RED. I was never able to move beyond RED. I haven’t changed water for at least a month, I just add aged water to top up due to evaporation. If this can sustain, I would be so happy. My fish are happy and have coloured up. OMG!!! thank you Father Fish. I’m so happy.

I once had to paint hallways, stairs, bedroom and lounge of the sweetest elderly lady who lived on her own. She'd been the first UK woman to get a phd in midwifery in an era when that was quite something for a woman. I visited her to talk colours. She said she was 'a pink girl', walls, wood, the lot, but was worried what others would think including her brother who lived quite a long way away. It would have been a travesty had she not ended the final years of her life surrounded by the colour that pleased her. I convinced her and we painted the lot pink, lol. The same with aquariums, there is no one else to please.

As far as art goes, when I worked in a paint and sip class, customers the age of FF were our favorites and did the coolest work. They would come in saying art wasnt their thing but were also fearless, unburdened by perfectionism and fear of judgement, which allowed them to be creative and play. The funny thing is they never appreciated the final product as much as we did. I think there is something very cool about a natural, wild scape that wasnt fussed over at all.

My shipment from your store came in today. I am hoping I set it up right. :p. Got all but the sand from you. Went this morning and got a jar of dead debri from the lake and it is in a window. I took over the fish tank at work and have it looking crisp and clean, but it is gravel with plastic plants and decorations. I think everyone will enjoy a more natural tank. Thanks so much for your videos! We are all excited to see it when it is thriving! Can I mix some of the gravel that has some of the brown hue (after a while in the tank)? That way the sand has nutrients? I am talking a small amount. Just to help seed growth of the plants.
@FatherFish
@FatherFish 4 месяца назад
If you have gravel in the tank, you can put sand directly on top; no need to add dirted mixture. Best option is to remove gravel and do dirted mixture then sand cap. But only if you were planning to empty the tank. If at all possible do not use gravel!

@@GrowingGardenKnowledge Play sand is dusty, so it requires a lot of washing, blasting sand is fairly popular too. Just rinse the sand out and you're fine. Reactivity isn't a significant concern as long as you're not trying to breed soft water species or buying very sensitive wild caught fish and the rest is esthetic, it's not going to physicality damage the fish. Personally, I really like pool sand. It doesn't compact like more angular grains and it's less dusty than average. Careful of color though, white shows algae and poop faster in addition to intensifying the light

If you have time, could you please speak a little about growing emersed plants with their roots in the aquarium water as part of the ecosystem? The other thing I’ve been struggling with is surface biofilm. How much does it damage gas exchange, and should I use a skimmer to remove it, or will my ecosystem eventually cause it to disappear?
@FatherFish

biofilm is not a hindrance to o2 exchange. It is a form of algae . add more plants andit should go away.

@tamerkesenkas1645
@tamerkesenkas1645 4 месяца назад
The aquascaping was a necessary thing to address. In "ecology style" aquariums it's harder to scape. 2 factors lead to this. First, the ecosystem rules what thrives and what doesn't in your aquarium, you can't just visually match stuff according to your liking. Secondly and more importantly, negative space! We always end up with jungle style scapes because we need so much plants to lessen water changes. Negative space is even more important than what you fill your picture with. Even if you manage to get some negative space, some bare sand, it's hard to keep it clean and manicured. My solution is to; 1¬add riparium and floating plants so they have the aerial advantage and lessen the need for underwater plants. 2¬use strong lights. Don't inhibit algae growth but remove it as it does. 3¬go heavy on your cleaning crew, algae eaters, detritus worms, shrimp, snails, especially something that likes digging and turning your sand (only the very top layer) 4¬understock If we combine these principles we regain some of the flexibility of high tech-frequent water change systems. We let other factors handle our stability so the main portion of the tank is low maintenance AND ALSO we are free to scape it however we want. I hope this helps someone

Dear Father fish , I started outdoor aquarium (fountain) in ur model. Dirt tank ( dirt and sand ) as a substrate. Then I planted it quite heavily. Its been three to four days and the water looks yellowish hazy. I am a new hobbyist and watching ur video extensively. Trouble is this hazy water problem is worrying me. Should I change the water 30 to 40 percent. Should i let the plants grow more ? I haven’t put any fish as of yet. Should i wait for 10 more days? A little clueless here. I dont have a filtration system as i want to keep it as natural as possible. But I have a motor that pulls the water up creating a fountain effect . Should i make a diy filter there with lava rocks and sand. Something from you will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a question. I’ve been trying to make a fish tank like yours for a while and I keep failing and keeping my water clear. And getting my plant life to grow from seed. Do you have any suggestions?.

Father Fish: when it comes to sand, is there a preferred range of grain sizes that are better than another? Very fine sand to very course sand (almost fine gravel) for example. There are so many "sands" on the market.

Sand.02mm - 1.2mm gran size is best

That's reassuring, I thought maybe my sand layer is too deep, but the water should still drain down into the soil

What is the best kind of sand to use? Is play sand ok?
@FatherFish
@FatherFish 4 месяца назад
any sand is ok if it is inert. Play sand is very dusty. Use it dry and conver with water CAREFULLY.

If you're using CA, you can't pass CA through the water column and expect it to work when it gets to the target item. CA reacts far too fast! You'd need to glue outside of the water column to have any chance of effective adhesion.

Pond mud with sand cap. Keep adding plants as the weak plants die off they provide fertilizer for the substrate . Nature provides everything from local water sources

What’s the first step that was done to have those microfauna swimming about? I need to know! They were there even before FF dumped the leaf mulch, you could see them swimming around as FF was planting the red plant! Thanks :)

Spore from microfauna are in the air we breath and they are universal, encompassing the globe. The food web resurrection jar simply insures a rich and balanced culture.

Are carpet plants and moss sufficient to maintain a FF ecosystem?
@FatherFish

Due to sand cap some carpet plants do not do well. Moss does well as it is on hardscape
