Do you guys think I need to change some Chess.com settings (e.g. piece animation speed), or does my mouse dexterity just suck? 😜 Would be nice to be smoother in time scrambles like 55:40

Maybe I'm wrong, but it does kind of seem like more of an issue with committing to moves. Like hesitating when you should be blitzing them out. If I'm wrong then I think it might just be dexterity.

If you have mouse acceleration on, try turning it off. It'll take some time to get used to, but the payoff is insane compared to keeping acceleration on.

Another benefit of "focused" 1 hour sessions is they are inherently more youtube-friendly and less edit-heavy than a longer, more casual twitch stream might be!

Acoustic treatment is always a good option for echoey rooms, it will actually make the room more pleasant to be in regardless if it's super noisy. That's almost a complete layup considering how cheap a 4 pack of foam is online. You could also consider a lapel mic. Higher end ones are designed to be used in news interviews which are often in less-than-ideal acoustic environments and still return high quality audio. Use that for when you're streaming and want to feel unencumbered and you can still bust out the condenser mic if needed for longer sessions or whatevs.

Yes, was about to write that. Without acoustic treatment and not wanting a big mic in your face, the best option is a lapel mic. There is always a lit bit of a loss in terms of sound quality but the majority of people view twitch in phones and tablets anyway.. I see a lot of streamers using the rode lapel, and they sound absolutely fine.

@@JohnBartholomewChess gotta say as well, I've been watching your older videos from like ~2 years ago (YT has been recommending them alot) and seeing you play here is like night and day, you really improved a lot man. There were several points in this video where I feel like you might have lost on time or struggled tactically in a video from 2019 where you just pulled out a win without even thinking. 23:20 NM title in post-Soviet countries is notoriously hard to get as you have to earn it by being at the top at national level competitions, where basically only GMs are playing

Happy new Year, John! Regarding your microphone issue, I had good results with shotgun mics, those can easily be placed a meter or so away, and they should also handle your room problems from that distance. recommendations: i had surprisingly good results with the Thomann t.bone EM 9900 which comes at about 100 bucks, I'm not 100% sure if this is on par with your SM7B in terms of sound quality though. Alternative would be a Sennheiser MKE 600 or even a Sennheiser MKH 416, which is sort of an industry standard, but you enter the 4 digit price range there. Hope this helps, greetings from germany :-)

hi john, i think you're looking for a shotgun microphone. they are highly directional microphones with a long range that sound great for speaking, used a lot in filmmaking where you dont want the microphone on camera. Sennheiser MKE 600 is the film industry standard, deservedly so. i think youtuber adam neely uses one of those. there are, of course, a lot more budget friendly options that will sound great as well.

More mic distance (requiring greater sensitivity) = More room sound. Your mic is great. Don't sacrifice audio for video. If you can't drastically 'professionally' acoustically treat your room or change you room, then do nothing.

John, do you edit out mouth sounds out of your videos or do you simply not make them? Either way, it is very appreciated amongst those of us who are sensitive to such sounds! Truly!

I do not :) But that's an interesting side benefit of using my mic, the Shure SM7B. You can put the noise gate pretty high to block most all extraneous background sounds (even random mouth sounds, evidently? haha).
