So a mistake that we made multiple times, was that if the tank commander was "unbuttoned" then you could spot an enemy tank as a "free action", this is true, but the tank commander needs to pass a crew test first, similar to the driver's test for a free pivot action 👍
Don't think I'll be buying this anytime soon. I initially was looking forward to a game of tank warfare, but I think I'll still stick with Bolt Action's Tank War. Trying to run all my German Panzers, and other vehicles, would see a game turn lasting all day and nothing much actually happening.
Definitely not the kind of game your going to be using for company-level actions, but for a tank-focused section or platoon level action it's quite interesting.
I know they sell big tanks so engagements aren't going to be at realistic ranges for the table size and scale but this looks a bit silly even given that consideration.
Part of wargaming is suspension of disbelief, I have to do that all the time with medieval games. I guess sometimes it's just easier when it's not your period of choice 👍
This seems like an ambitious game design. I applaud the designers for trying to add more granularity into tabletop tank combat. However, deciding what ammo to load or how fast to load it do not seem like interesting tactical choices in my book. The problem is, if you have one clear obvious move that benefits you, such as firing, you will never try anything else. This makes the game ultimately a die roll. A good design would implement two equally beneficial choices and make it a player dilemma which to choose. Also the entire "roll a d6 and consult this chart which can only support two modifiers" gets really stale after so many games. They are trying to solve the problem of how to make an engaging 28mm tank game and that's difficult because real tank warfare involves multiple platoons on a play field large enough to support true tactical maneuver which a gaming table does not do at this scale.
I think this is a thought out and we'll put together response, rather than be abruptly dismissive like some. I'm simply playing this as a "fun" and gaming set of rules l, which I enjoy rather than outright simulation. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 👍
Thanks buddy, really pleased you enjoyed it, we made a couple of mistakes but I think the general feels of the game comes over, we're planning the next already 👍
fantastic video as always. A lot of interesting ideas in this one... but it feels a little bloated to me, also a bit too much cardboard and stuff to keep track of for my taste. But definitely seems a treadhead's dream :D
Really pleased you liked it 👍 I think once you're a couple of games in it will become almost second nature but it certainly won't be to everyone's tastes 😁
A little too far with the micro management for me and way too many cards, chits & counters. Seems like a good game if you are willing to put the time into mastering it. Might be more interesting played at a smaller scale like 10mm or 15mm. Everything just feels very crammed into too small a space.
@@7thson726 Yeah and when that panther missed the M4's side armor at a range so close the the Panther could have used it's barrel to beat the M4 into a rusty pulp without firing?
@@tracygrove3484 again, that's a fair point. I don't really mind, that's just the game aspect, after all, it's meant to be entertaining. I'd never play a game with auto hits for anything. It's the same when I play medieval games, there are things that drive me crazy from a historical point of view but ultimately I want to have a laugh and a game. It's what makes it a game and not a simulation 🤔 speaking of which I need to finish my own rules soon 😁
@@tracygrove3484 you could rationalise it as the Sherman was so close that it's movement was quicker than the panther turret could traverse or that being so close its movement was hard to follow through the optics
Looks very nice, great Battle report. Would this work on a smaller scale like 15mm? For exampel the gaming table space needed. More gaming space with 15mm for large tank battle.
Thanks for the play through! I don’t play Bolt Action at all but I’ve been excited for this to come out. How do you think this would play at 15mm scale (e.g. Flames of War)?
Looks very similar to “What a Tanker” with a bit of extra chrome. Might be fun as WaT can be but too much of a drilldown for the kind of tactical game I favour.
An interesting game. I liked the granularity of loading shells and spotting. Liked the addition of cards impacting play. I have lots of tanks so may buy the rules if available without bundled tank kits.
Right haha I've just realised (had it pointed out to me) there are two Tank hunter cards, one with pen 0 which is a 1 ⭐ asset (rifle grenades and such) while there is also a pen 5 attack which is 2 ⭐ and represents a Bazooka - so Robin did have it right, I just put up the wrong card on the screen 😅
Glad the video was helpful in showing the game, ultimately no game will be for everyone but better to find that out before purchase, thanks for watching 👍
The fail on the driver test doesn't say that you cannot then move through the terrain. It says you suffer a penalty to your gunner's targeting marker (at least that's what the rules box in your video said. Are you sure that failing a driver test prevents you from plowing through bushes and what not?.
Awesome video! Great set up too. Just some notes so far: the unbuttoned commander still has to pass a crew test to see if the spot becomes a free action. Also HE has a penetration value equal to the number in parentheses on the stat cards! Cant wait to see more of your games. :)
Cheers, glad you liked it. Yeah I realised that as I edited the video, along with a couple of other things, ah well, that's why it's a learning game, hoping to have another soon 😁
Really good video and review. The games looks really good. Nicely produced I liked the event cards and the feel of combined arms. Now I’m on my limited budget it’s not something I will buy I’ll stick with what a tanker. But if someone had no other tank game it looks like a great start 👍🏻
I thought Robin would do fine with this game but didn’t expect Martin to be so comfortable with tanks 😂 I will definitely be picking up this game when it comes available and will most likely build some American vehicles to go with my Soviet tank force.
This explains the tanks then! Luckily I have every vehicle in rubicons range... (in multiples, 13 shermans so far.. best models in the scale (sorry Dom)), and all of warlords plastics + bunch of resin. Pre-ordered this, looks like it's the game I've been wanting to be fair.
I really enjoyed this showcase of the game and the scenery is great. Did you make the scenery yourself or is it purchased? If it's self made I'd like to see a vid on how you made it 👍🏻
Really pleased you enjoyed it 😁 So a lot of the trees are home-made, the buildings and walls are 3D prints, everything else is pretty much scatter material like lichen, flock and other bits. I have thought about doing a video about setting up a table for a game bit by bit
So question on the Driver crew test - you failed the first test but the rules you displayed said only that the failed test impacted spotting. Do you still complete the planned movement or do you stop at the terrain piece?
So that was a mistake, the failed test for crossing linear terrain does only mean you lose the spotting, we were reading the table from the Ambush terrain (which is the next one down) which then causes you to halt if you fail 👍
@@SGusky so HE is used to clear ambush terrain, once cleared it can't be selected as an option for playing assets, such as tank hunting team's or anti-tank guns. If Robin had cleared the house with an HE round before driving past it I wouldn't have been able to use it to launch a tank hunter attack.
if you mean the random events tables from lardies , I mostly ignore using those in all their rules . will try What a tanker again as i have not played it since it came out. Cheers @@SteveInTokyo-b8n
Similar concepts but executed differently, less random, more granular, there are only so many ways to describe terms in tank combat (same as in naval games) so there will be some cross over 😁👍
What do you mean, my tactics of driving straight out of cover straight at him were flawless, Haha, well, it's a choice, spend ages getting tactical advantages and being clever, or getting stuck in to show off how the game works 😉😅 I think when we play the missions it'll be more thought out 👍
