I’m impressed by the sailors, but honestly I don’t understand why you’d want to own or sail that boat single-handed. Tippy, low freeboard, expensive, and not good for casual sailing at all. I’ve sailed since 1963 and cats since 1971. A modern non foil cat would be much more fun and forgiving than these boats. We sailed our cats right off the beach. But with chutes in a NACRA we were hitting 24 knots, and yes the boat was safe enough (with chase boat) to sail to 25 miles offshore to Channel Islands.

For a lot of skiff sailors… that is the point. I have race both double and single handed cats and skiffs all my life and I agree with you… cat sailing generally feels like a luxury cruise compared to most monohulls. But a lot of us are in it for that rush on endorphins when you beat the odds and sail the boat perfectly… the harder that is to do the bigger the rush. But you are right… you don’t really want to sail one casually. I find there is a threshold of time on the water that you have to meet in skiffs for one to have a good time. Otherwise you spend your time upside down breaking both boat and human. Growing up racing Oppies around the world… they sailed basically as fast sideways and backwards as they did forwards and a good sailor could turn on a dime and slip to windward up the line they they had an electric motor. That manoeuvrability and control exists to some degree in all monohulls but is practically non existent in cats. That among other things makes fleet racing possible… for those that love it… there is nothing like busy monohulls start line. Cats are more forgiving certainly… but for some… less fun!
