We have such similar thoughts I can't deal Rhys just comes off as so lust driven and horny When we first went into his pov I was like woooooooow, are you serioussss????? You can't think or see Feyre without thinking sexually?That part of him bothers me so much I love that you said something else I was thinking the WHOLE time while reading this- it is just fanfiction honestly. I fangirl at my favorite characters and some interactions that happened, but it truly did feel like fanfiction got published I didn't have terribly high hopes since I was SO disappointed in ACOWAR hahahaa

Yes, yes yes!!!! Completely agree with all of this. This one was really disappointing.

I will say, I always read Mor as a lesbian. When it was revealed in ACOWAR, I felt validated. But I hate what I’ve been hearing about SJM implying Mor is only a lesbian because she was hurt by men. That feels gross, disingenuous, and ignorant.
@BeautifullyBookishBethany
@BeautifullyBookishBethany 6 лет назад
That is really interesting. I never did when I was reading but I’m sure it’s a valid possibility! But yeah, the way it’s being handled is far from ideal.

I don't think publishing it in December would have saved any of it TBH lol. Gotta burn it and start over. Millenial Feyre needs a rewrite...preferably without the Uggs...and sex flying...and weird monster paintings as Christmas gifts. "Hi hun, here's a painting of my *black soul* Love ya!"

Yeah,I don't get why woman/girls praise SJM so much of having periods in her books,in which their saying, "Oh!,it's so refreshing to read it in fantasy b/c most of the time you never hear or mention in other fantasy books having them or talking about it,its so "realistic"." Which I do understand,but I don't think we should look down on other fantasy books just b/c some woman/girl characters are not on their period? Also the sex flying scene and Rhysand POV all sounded rapey,disturbing,lustful,and sick...Hummm,A Court of 50 Shades much.
@BeautifullyBookishBethany
@BeautifullyBookishBethany 6 лет назад
😂😂😂 omg I laughed so much at Court of 50 Shades! But yeah, I don't even mind references to periods as much, it's just the extended description that was unconnected to anything was weird for me.

I won’t be reading ACOFAS, but I think read the original 3. I never liked Rhys and had issues with him from the beginning. I’m sure ACOFAS just expanded upon how problematic he is.

Ruby's Nails It was always so weird to me how his questionable past actions were swept under the rug by some of the fans of this trilogy. I read the first three books (didn’t think they were all that), but don’t plan on continuing the series.

I don't like Rhys either. Like I don't get why so many seemes to love him. And hate Tamlin (I don't really hate him. ), for what he did when Rhys is not that good either. Like how he's described as a saint or knight in shining armour. Both of Feyre's bos , have done some really stupid things. I don't get why one should get all the hate , when the other one not. Which is kind of one of the reasons why I don't like him and why I think he's problematic. PLEASE! All Rhys fans. Don't hate me. Just my opinon.
@ariakitty
@ariakitty 6 лет назад
I think you picked up on all the parts that really bothered me about this book. I think the part that really grossed me out was the sex scene. Specifically when Feyre sends an image of their future child into Rhys' mind... and that's when he climaxes? Really? The moment he's looking at a child???? That's just weird. I really don't know what SJM was thinking with MOST of the scenes in this book, but especially that one. I liked the ACOTAR series despite it's problems (and, oh, there are problems) but I, too, pre-ordered this book and I kinda felt betrayed. Bloomsbury was promoting it like it was a full length novel (they charged for one, too) and it's just... it's what I think of when I think of the type of fanfiction I DON'T want to read, which is self-indulgent fluff with no plot or purpose except to write cozy fire scenes and smut.

You were much more generous than I was. I gave it a 1 star rating for all the same reasons you did but also, there was no driving action, no plot, nothing. I pre ordered it too and it's been my biggest disappointment in a long time.
@BeautifullyBookishBethany
@BeautifullyBookishBethany 6 лет назад
Yeah....I do think that's a fair rating. There was enough of it that I found interesting that 1 star was too low for me. I tend to reserve that for books with no redeeming qualities.

If this book had been released in December , it would have ruined Christmas. Also, I thought that it was crappy that neither Feyre nor her friends got Nesta a Solstice present when Feyre is pushing so hard to make her be just like them in the BFF squad. Seriously Feyre, you shopped for like half the book!!

Like why can't they let him be happy. Since SJM always kind of pairs up all characters. Why not do the same with him. It would atleast feel good for my heart. And perhaps bring another high lady. Since Feyre right now is such a special snowflake. And I can't stand it. Sorry if I rant a lot. And please don't be mad at me.

So I liked the first three, mostly. They were all 4 star reads for me. Do you think I should skip this one entirely and just move on to the next one in the series when it comes out? Or would I be missing some crucial plot elements?
@BeautifullyBookishBethany
@BeautifullyBookishBethany 6 лет назад
I mostly liked the first three as well. I think you could go either way with this one. There aren't a lot of critical plot elements in the book, although there are a couple of minor things that might bridge the books. And I also think if you go in with low expectations and maybe get it from the library or something, it might not be so bad. I did give it 2.5 stars, so it wasn't completely terrible, just not worth buying a hardcover copy of in my opinion. And I really didn't like Rhys as much in this!
@duttonm0640
@duttonm0640 5 лет назад
I totally agree with everything you said! The flying sex was completely unnecessary and honestly just problematic realistically. Sounds like a terrible way to have sex, just saying. And I am definitely done with Ryhs and Feyre. I was done with them through most of ACOWAR to be honest. I felt like after they were officially together in ACOMAF that I really didn't care about the rest of their story. Yea you finally got together with someone good now I just want to move on to everyone else's stories. And on that note, I LOVE Nessian but Nesta's behaviour through this entire book was cringy and irritating. I couldn't have liked her less.

I finally got to your review!! I ended up giving this 3 stars but I had so many issues. I was happy to get a little more character content but I was disappointed which sucks because I wasn't a big fan of ACOWAR either. I also wondered why Feyre was drinking so much throughout this. I have to agree the sneak peak was my favorite part of this entire thing. I was somewhat starting to like Nesta after certain parts of the last 3 books but it's like she went so far back by the time we got here. Hopefully she is redeemed in the next book

I haven't watched your whole video because I haven't read the book yet. I was wondering if I should hold off and just read it around Christmas time, do you think it would make the book a little better if I wait until than? Or was your problem the book in general and waiting wouldn't help liking it more? I can wait because I have plenty of books on my tbr, and upcoming books, to hold me over. My problem with waiting is that I really want to listen to your video and I don't know if I could wait that long to listen to your video!!!!!!!

100% agree with you on all counts. The only thing I can say is I am happy this was released in short story/novella form instead of having to force myself through it within a 700 page tome. I had a hard enough time trudging through this with how short it was. If this had been part of a larger book, I would have DNF'd HARD.

I understand everything that you are saying about this. For me, I saw the problems, and enjoyed it anyway. The flaws in the characters actually helped me enjoy the short story more. It felt more realistic to me. I think things we idolized so much in the original trilogy, that this short novel took the rose covered glasses off. Yes, it is problematic, as many of her books are. I, like you, will brle continuing on.

GAHH! Nothing about this book makes any sense! You’re telling me that we waited this long to finally be consistently in Rhys’s perspective and all we get is a horny rabbit? Uhh no thanks! I don’t usually regret reading a book even if I dislike it, but ACOFAS is the exception. It took Rhys (one of my favorite male characters) and completely tainted him😭 Great review!

You said "Give me more of that, please" in regards to the sneak peak. But it's so hard to read. And I am not saying it because Nesta is a bitch to everyone else. But because everyone else is being a complete dick to her. The end of a war does not end with happy endings for everybody and the death of Nesta's father has made her enter severe clinical depression (as has Tamlin for that matter) and people are constantly being awful to her. She doesn't want help from them, because they got her into this mess in the first place, and if you've never been depressed I don't think you can understand how damaging all the other character's actions are to her. Feyra is constantly shoving her happiness in her face and it makes her feel miserable and Rhysand basically holds a grudge against her because of what their father forced Feyra to do as a kid - also their Father and Elain have portraits in Feyra's house and she has none like she does not matter. Feyra does not give her a present for Solstice, none of them do except Elain, because she doesn't matter to them. And Cassian questions why her sisters love her?! That is an unbelievably cruel thing to say to someone suffering from severe depression and is going on a downward spiral of self-destruction.
@BeautifullyBookishBethany
@BeautifullyBookishBethany 6 лет назад
Thanks for sharing your perspective. I do have experience with depression, but I don’t feel like that excuses her behavior or the consequences of it. And honestly, I just found the sneak peek to be more interesting than the rest of the book, even if it’s darker.
@elrilmoonweaver4723
@elrilmoonweaver4723 6 лет назад
Yes well, that's entirely up to you who you choose to sympathize with. I personally cannot sympathize nor agree with most of the actions of Rhys, Feyra, Cassian and Amren (Mor and Az are ok in my book they aren't actively being dicks to other people) that's why I feel like I can sympathize with Nesta, Tamlin, Lucien and Elain instead and feel the need to defend them as characters. I understand your point that Nesta's depression does not excuse her behavior towards the other characters. It is valid in certain situations. However I would argue that Rhys and Feyra's authority as Lord and Lady of the Night Court does not excuse nor justify the awful way they treat Nesta, Tamlin and Lucien especially, nor does everyone else have to agree or care with just how FUCKING PERFECT their life is and or put up with their constantly shoving it in other people's faces (including us, the readers). Feyra does this constantly to Nesta (and Rhys does this to Tamlin) and she's basically implying "look at how well I have it... compared to you". I personally didn't like it when my own sister did that to me when I was depressed and I can understand why Nesta wouldn't either. Also there are no visible consequences on Feyra and Rhys in regards to Nesta's behavior. They just shrug it off and go back to their life. On Cassian however? He's the one who's insisting for Nesta to give him attention, so it's understandable that she would reject him given that she said multiple times! to Cassian to just leave her alone and he still drones on and on. Going as far as to insult her. I don't think the consequences of her actions on the Inner Circle are as noticeable as the other way around. Her opinions on them barely get through to them and it certainly doesn't make them self reflect. But their opinions of her do!

I waited to watch this until I got the chance to read it. Haha. I’m leaning towards about 3 out of 5 stars. For me, one of my favorite holidays is Christmas, and that vibe kept me from rating it lower. I loved that it was a Christmas type story, but I do agree that it had several issues. I thought the sex stuff was absolutely ridiculous and not at all keen on it. Also, Nesta drove me up a wall. Like, they’re her family, and she should be grateful they’re not all gone. Lots of families lost most, if not all, their loved ones in the war. Get over yourself. 🙄 And Tamlin was just painful to read about.
@BeautifullyBookishBethany

So is this a good representation of SJM writing and style, or no? Should I have started with a different one. The Thorny Rose one? I'm trying out modern fantasy books that everyone seems to love, to see what i like. The dreamer in me died a long time ago... I'd like to find the magic in life again. Is this more fantasy with romance? Or more romance with a bit of fantasy? I just find it all terribly cheesy and kinda embarrassing - is it just this specific book or is this how it always goes? Is it normal to get these "perfect/flawless/orgasmic" "earth-shattering" "mind-reading" "soulmates" "greatest cosmos-shaking sex ever- even greater than the last time we had the greatest earth-moving sex ever ever" sex scenarios common? Is this doing it for others? Is that the writing, or just this specific book? Am I just dead inside? That might be the case.... Thanks for any direction.
