Happens with home made multi scale guitars all the time. People play them then I ask them to look at the frets to see if they notice anything and it's like OMG......WTFFFFFF?????

The cap on the headstock should cover up to the nut on the treble end. That said it's pretty cool on its own.

I discovered fanned frets because of Don Ross and Andy McKee, so acoustics are where that started for me. I tried it, and it did not require any learning at all. In fact, it was instantly more comfortable than standard frets. I also found they translated to bass very well. If I had the money, fanned frets are all I would play.

I can't justify another guitar right now (I've got 6!) but I watch these vids just to hear Pete and Mick play! Also Pete had problems with a chord! OMG he is human after all - not a guitar god - now only a Demi-God! Lol Great to see and hear you together again guys

Actually i had heard that (at least one of) the main reason(s) for Multiscale fretboards, is that you get a better equalisation of tensions across the strings. Certainly that is what the multi scale bass instruments seem to offer. And it certainly seems to work especially on 5 string basses, as the bottom B really seems more solid and "bigger" than the standard scale basses.

OK, got to the end of the video and i'm sold. These sound pretty good even over RU-vid, and i could do with an acoustic guitar (even though i'm mainly a Violinist and Bassist). these look like great value for money, and i just love the idea of the multi scale neck. PS the usual great playing, too, guys.

@PursuitSk8
@PursuitSk8 7 лет назад
Bill Yellow you would totally be able to use a fanned fret with a capo, bar chords are totally doable, there's a song I play where I bar the second fret on every string
@buschdogg
@buschdogg 3 года назад
I have this guitar - it works fine with a capo. I have zero problems. My only issue is that it's so... flat. Don't get me wrong, it's a perfect sound... everything is balanced. I have an upgraded Anthem SL preamp/pickup in it.. and it can sound amazing plugged in.. but I would compare it to my Thiel speakers. Thiels are extremely high end audio that are flat response and put out exactly what you feed them. Feed them a crappy signal? Get a crappy sound. EQ it and feed it a solid signal with solid components (playing)? You'll get a great sound. So, what's the problem? Well, I can plug my Larrivee in and it just sounds amazing on any setting. I am a sucker for jumbo's, admittedly, and Larrivee is, in my opinion, as good as any other acoustic on the market. I have a Cort Earth 1200 that sounds like a Martin... and plays every bit as well. I don't have a pickup for it, but acoustically, it's my favorite or equal to the Larrivee... So, back to the problem: The problem is that I have to customize every setting to the Ibanez to make it sound the way I want. Acoustically/not plugged in, it sounds extremely clean, but I can't pick out separate notes in the midrange because they are so equally leveled to everything else. TL:DR; It's a great guitar... it plays phenomenally, even if you've never played a fanned fret. However, be prepared for the most neutral and flat response you'll ever hear. The way I see it, this can be terrible or phenomenal depending on your needs. I think it can be a fantastic session guitar, especially if used direct-in. However, and I say this while it sits on my wall and I can't ever see myself selling it - I end up playing it less unplugged than any other acoustic because of the flat response. Also, I should say that i have a TonewoodAmp installed, so it has reverb and other "natural" effects, even unplugged. All in all - I guess I'd say that it's "lifeless," but intentionally so. I mean, isn't the whole point of fanned-fret guitars to make a move "balanced" or "even" tone across all strings? It does this perfectly. But the real question is, "Do you really want that?" I'm still not sure, but I do love the way it plays. I wish it had the sound of my Larrivee, but played the same as it already does.

Are there issues using a capo? Do capos work any better around the seventh fret, where the frets are more conventionally perpendicular to the line of the neck, than they do nearer to the extreme ends of the fingerboard, where the angle of the frets is more pronounced? Or are there some designs of capo that work, and others that don't?
@PapaMikeOfDenver
@PapaMikeOfDenver 8 лет назад
Man, from certain angles (undoubtedly because I'm used to seeing the frets all lined up) those fretboards look like they're curling around a bit. Obviously just a trick of the eye, but weird none the less. Great playing as always!

I was a bit sceptical at first but these actually make a lot of sense. The whole fan-fret thing is still a bit scary to me, but i should really check these out. god i love these videos. Am i right in thinking fan frets came about with ibanez 7 strings, prog metal that kinda thing. i can see real benefit for those who enjoy doing finger picked arrangements of songs as well
@lauscho
@lauscho 8 лет назад
"Am i right in thinking fan frets came about with ibanez 7 strings, prog metal that kinda thing." ACTUALLY! I believe the patent was originally held by Novax, and it was intended more for jazz guitarists. A few small companies got on board later, like Strandberg and such, and those guys were definitely more geared to prog-metal, and Ibanez was one of the last companies to hop on the bandwagon.

I'm wondering how hard/easy they are to work on? Are they harder to set up? Is the action easier to adjust? The concept makes sense but my mind is thinking old Martin/Taylor's and my eyes are seeing the 21st century... I'm somewhat unsure. Btw, I love the interaction between you gentlemen - talented and just fun to be around.

@segazora

I wish they would make multiscale guitars with a straight nut and just the bridge being slanted... my index fingers are lean in naturally so I wouldn't be able to bar an F chord if the lower frets lean the other way.

Hello people. I made an electric multi-scale Bass and Guitar about 15 years ago, still got them. The strings are much more in balance, the intonation is much more accurate and therefore the guitar is much more in tune. It is the evolution of the guitar IMO.

I am surprised that ergonomics is not one of the key points highlighted here. My understanding is that the concept originated more on the idea of making playing more comfortable than anything else. Personally, when I learned about this years ago.. I also was thinking.. man.. bends must be easier as well...anyway. I do believe ergonomics are an important factor that should be stressed. .. and since I never played one.. was really curious to know if indeed things like bar chords up and down the neck felt more natural or not. not to mention just soloing .. the movements should be more natural as the fan follows how we move our hand up and down the neck

Fan fret seems kind of awesome. Although I think using medium strings helps if you're tuning down. I typically play in D and sometimes drop the low E to a C as well, and it's not bad with medium strings instead of light. These guitars sound kind of like made in China budget guitars tho, or is that because they're playing through the pickups?
