No surprise that Chris Perkins, "DM to the Stars," was born on a leap year. Without Chris we wouldn't have some of the best live gaming moments in D&D history. To celebrate great DM's everywhere, tell us about one of your best moments as a DM or a great DM you've had the honor of playing with.
@ChrisWood

My best moments as a DM are often not when things go according to plan, but when the players and I are off the rails and vamping off of each other. You'll be surprised how quickly you can think when you're feeding off the vibe of your table. Case in point: we are playing _Scourge of the Sword Coast_ at my FLGS, and I had a halfling rogue want to inspect Alven Gissen's room. It could've gone off without a hitch and the story kept humming along, but I had the image of a halfling trying to pick a lock that is too tall for him demand that I use it. So we did, and a five-minute long comedy improv on how the rogue wanted to solve this problem. Every step introduced a new challenge, and the table was in stitches by the time we were done. The rogue wound up failing pretty miserably (that's what happens when the only table in an adjacent room has a half-finished game of Jenga on it) but nobody cared. It was too much fun to not explore that little side-routine.

I am usually the DM when I play. One of the few rare moments when I got to play was when I was still in HS and the much older brother of our gaming group held a few sessions where we played a home grown scenario in a world he created. All of it was based upon the album "Songs From the Wood" by Jethro Tull. He used the lyrics of many of the songs in that album for developing the world, the plot, and used one song as a form of a riddle that we had to solve. It was an amazingly creative gaming experience where the music would be playing in the background. We were constantly referencing the lyrics in the album cover whenever he presented new content just to see where he may have got the reference from. I must say it was probably my most memorable gaming experience of all time. Thank you Jim Z. for creating and sharing such an enjoyable RPG experience... wherever you are. :-)

There was one campaign where everybody was getting fed up, even I as the DM. Eventually the party killed a former PC to use his head as the prophet of a religion they made up on the spot. I really didn't care by that point and was much more invested in screwing two water-bottles together. That was a really interesting day.

Having been out of D&D for a few years I was invited to a play with a group from UNI. Hesitantly, with my halfling ranger in front of me, I picked up my D20 again. During our lengthy adventures we went spelunking through dungeons, attacking the darkness, and even stitched back together the fabric of time. Throughout this our DM rekindled my love of slinging dice. It brought our group together through some hillarous scenarios. You haven't lived until you have seen a rouge, who being transformed into a cat. Still somehow manages (by using some truly impressive gymnastics) to perform a full strength sneak attack on on a dealdy foe. We all couldn't stop laughing at her feline acrobatics. Coincidentally, the player of this rouge has now been my girlfriend for the last 6 years. All of these wonderful experiences all had at its core, a gifted DM. Thanks Andy.

Our DM had our party of 4 facing a basilisk. After a long and dangerous fight, we killed the damn thing but one of our comrades had been turned into stone. Without any spells that could turn him back to normal, we began to walk away from his statue. Someone suggested to loot the basilisk, in hope to find something decent. The only thing that we looted was...its balls. Yes, the Basilisk's Balls. Without any clue what they were used for, I decided to throw them away. Due to some high luck, the balls fell on our comrade that had been turned into stone, and then cured him from his misery. Best night ever

I love how Chris Perkins is very clearly on the side of his players. He has a narrative adventure and challenges to present them, but is always willing to indulge in the players' solutions, only occasionally saying "no" when something is either unreasonable (usually a joke anyway) or impossible. Moreover, he adjudicates with an emphasis on fun regardless if their actions succeed or fail. Truly something to aspire toward as a DM.

This brought back memories of playing D&D with my friends back in the early 1980's at the age of 14 or so. While D&D is slaying monsters and plundering treasures, it is really about friends enjoying each others company and probably more goofing around. I'm not sure we ever got through an entire quest. Good times and memories forever.

@voteZDLR
@voteZDLR 8 лет назад
Matthew Lugo I think that's a fair evaluation. Chris's Acquisitions Icorporated games are perhaps the most famous series of DM'ed tabletop games on the Internet today (although Critical Role's pretty damn popular, too) -- but overall the atmosphere is more serious in Mercer's. That's not to say all Chris can do is comedy. I've heard from people who claim to have played with him (and I don't have any reason to suspect them of lying) who say he's actually sort of a ruthless DM if you're playing in just one of his normal games. He'll follow the rules to the letter whether it benefits him or if it benefits the players, and he's been known to instakill a player's beloved character in a single round action. Not necessarily the guy you know and love from this series. Also he gives them a lot more breaks during the livestream events, but I actually don't blame him for that because they have to stick to a time table. They're both excellent, high-quality DMs though, no matter which way you look at it.

I've Always been the DM of our DnD group, 10 years of 3.5 and still going strong! My most memorable and gratifying moment as a DM was after a long and exciting session with a horror-theme to it. The players woke up in a haunted mansion without memory of how they got there, but slowly getting information on what had happened, all the while being terrorized and psychologically abused by me as a DM. That evening ended with two of my players not daring to bike back home in the dark after our game session, insisting on staying the night at my place. At that Point I knew I had done my part. :)

I always thought DnD and roleplaying was kinda boring or stale, but looking at this makes me wanna play with these guys.
@iglidor
@iglidor 8 лет назад
+brozter Depends on your group and what kind of gameplay you prefer. For me, the most precious things on roleplaying is that after some time of playing you actualy have stories that you can tell about your character. Some players actualy make very detailed diaries which they then share on internet and unless you are not told that it was some RPG gameplay you would believe it to be actual story that someone just wrote out of their head.
@LifeByChocolates
@LifeByChocolates 8 лет назад
+iglidor But that is exactly what D&D and other RPG games like D&D are, outlines for fantasy stories. You fill in the detail as you play.
@iglidor
@iglidor 8 лет назад
Mark LaPolla Yeah but there are fantasy stories worthy to tell and some that are not. And which are which depends on your DM and how you play. I mean I met two solid munchkins and played with them in past for while. It was absolutely boring after two sessions. Fantasy story that will never be told because it is boring even to those who were there, not to mention how silly it would sound to someone else. That is what I meant by different gameplays. Players can have fun, but story can still suck a lot with certain styles
@LifeByChocolates
@LifeByChocolates 8 лет назад
True enough. You can write your own fantasy adventure, or rather game it, but that doesn't mean they'll be great. Just think what Vonnegut said about storytelling.

Not really, though. A glade is a small open area in a forest where there aro no trees.

Thank you for giving both a short and long answer, especially the long, as it was very helpful. I have the books somewhere, and could've compared their stats, but you answered the question I had, which was more story-based than stat-based. Thanks again.

Coming from the year 2019, there are two surreal oddities in this episode: 1) Hearing Chris Perkins say the words "Green Flame" followed by no one repeating his words, and 2) hearing Chris Perkins say No to Patrick Rothfuss. It's kind of unnerving, to be honest.

after watching all the available Acquisitions Inc. D&D videos I would like to sincerely like to thank all of the players for teaching me what this game has the potential to be. I had extremist doubts about D&D before watching them and am now finally investing my time with new friends in what is actually a fun and engaging game!

This is my yearly "sporting" event! I literally make a day of it and just bask in how fun it is. I cant wait for next year when i dawn my Acquisitions Inc. tabard and cheer on my favorite adventuring group. *I do listen to the pod casts, but being able to see their expressions and gestures is magnificent.*

With the exception of some parts where they stayed more than they should, everyone was amazing. Perkins is the best DM someone could hope for, but I was really surprised by Patrick. He was so much fun and his contribution to this video is immense. Role playing at its best. The others were also very good with some great moments. This video is a classic.

I know this is hard to do but, can't you Wizard of the Coast guys do a D&D live game like this every month? (Of course not as big as Pax Prime live sessions) We know that Chris DMs for the guys why can't you just record it. I'm not talking about podcasts, it's funnier (and better) when you can see the players expressions and plus I'm a DM Chris is such an inspiration, he's a monster!! And Patrick it's the best thing Acquisition ever had! What ho!!

Any time Mike or Jerry or Scott made a joke I kept expecting somebody else to immediately make a film or TV reference, repeat their punchline back at them in a silly voice or address the attendees in a desperate bid to draw attention to themselves. But it never happened. I wonder what was different this year?

Looking back, it's really weird watching D&D "Next" as opposed to 5e. All the little changes are really interesting, and it really makes me wish Critical Role had the years worth of content of them playing e4, Pathfinder, and the practice games with 5e in preparation for the show.

that robot dick segment had me laughing so hysterically i started hacking and coughing. rossfuss isnt as confident as the others on stage (naturally) but he has a natural and laidback wit that makes him a much better fit with this group than wheaton (who preferred to ham it up).

A reliably positive advancement in quality has occurred in this 'series' of annual events and I have to say, that every year the quality has not dipped in any significant degree to undermine the overall comforting satisfaction that has been provided in entertainment form. Thoroughly excited to see what can be done next.
