Today we're using a line bender to form some acrylic for our new CNC dust shroud. We're not that good at it - come watch!

If you speed the video up to 1.75x he speaks at a normal pase and you'll save some valuable time whilst still learning whatever your here to learn.

Ah no worries, thanks mate. I look forward to learning some more from your videos, cheers.

I was told that the bubbles that form are due to the presence of water in the acrylic and that you need to heat it for a while to dry it out before bending it. Any water in the plastic allows for low-pressure voids to form during the bend (not vacuums).
@GratuitousSets
@GratuitousSets 3 года назад
I've heard something similar! Pre-heating sounds like a good idea😎

Ok. This is new on my quest to build a dust extraction on /for my dremel tool plunge attachment. There are no dust extractors available. Yours is the #2 video I watched so far. Semper Fi.

Line bender tape? I have never seen that before. Can you control the temperature? Back when I started in the sign/display industry we modified metal bending brakes with heating elements and made jigs since we were making large quantities. Slightly off topic but when you CNC acrylic with a V Bit do you lubricate the bit during routing?
@GratuitousSets
@GratuitousSets 5 лет назад
You could probably control temp with a rheostat, but we don't. We learned about the linear tapes from the acrylic guys we use for complex stuff. No lubricant- did you?
@KB-yy7zt
@KB-yy7zt 5 лет назад
I was going to order a V bit to play with but the instructions said to lubricate for cooling. We typically just use upcut bits for metal.
@GratuitousSets
@GratuitousSets 5 лет назад
I wouldn't worry about lubrication for acrylic, for fine etching we use 60 degree V bits or V shaped engraving bits without difficulty :-)

Yeah, I was going to ask the same thing. Never heard of it...sounds a lot better than a torch under plate steel 😂

anyone got a good acrylic bending video? I went through about 3 of these how to videos and they are all "learn along" videos.
@twistedendingsproductions2782

You may want to try a can of compressed air to cool off the acrylic, as you would hot glue.
@smappdooda

Was about to suggest this exact same thing. Glad I read the comments first.

That’s a great idea- why didn’t I think of that?!

@@GratuitousSets Wouldn't the thermal shock be too great? It could crack or am I wrong?
@GratuitousSets
@GratuitousSets 5 лет назад
I guess the cold air would cool at about the same rate as the water, but we might not want to spray with the can upside down or have liquid come out of the can... I dunno. I'll give it a shot on a test piece first...
@twistedendingsproductions2782

unogazzy84 Test it. It works on hot glue. Besides, it looks more sophisticated than the water. 🧐

What is temperature of your heat strip? Can I use a small propane torch to heat bend?
@GratuitousSets
@GratuitousSets 2 года назад
About 250 degrees Fahrenheit or 160 Celsius. I don't think a torch would work for acrylic sheet. I don't think you could get the line to that temperature evenly- you'd risk burning the acrylic or you'd have spots that would be ready to bend next to hard acrylic. 🤓

The plastic makers wouldn't push towards PETG and away from acrylic because that would mean less breakage and fewer sales.

What happened during the 11 minutes? He didn't say. How can it bend so easily then?
@GratuitousSets
@GratuitousSets 3 года назад
We used the strip heated on it to soften it😎
@treefarm3288
@treefarm3288 3 года назад
So there is a heat supply under what he called the line bender? How hot is it?
@GratuitousSets
@GratuitousSets 3 года назад
i'm not sure- They are sold specifically for bending acrylic and don't have a thermostat. It does get a bit hotter if you use it for more than 30 minutes at a time, though.
@swishpan

Where is the heat?

We are using a “line bender” there is a heating element in that strip of plywood. You can buy them from plastic suppliers

Just finished a build using a decent amount of acrylic and now just the word acrylic brings to mind the horrendous smell of cutting acrylic...😵

skipped through vid several times and still don't get how the bends are made? heat? cutting? someone please point me to where he explains the bending process.
@GratuitousSets
@GratuitousSets 2 года назад
It's heat- We use a "line heater (bender)" . We place it under the line that we want to bend and wait for the acrylic to become pliable, then bend it at the appropriate angle. Let me know if you'd like for me to get you links if you need to buy one. -Mark

Being that this is for “dummies” wouldn’t it be necessary to not assume we dummies know what is a line bender? 🤷🏼‍♂️
@GratuitousSets
@GratuitousSets Год назад
You've got a good point there! I'm guessing you were able to figure it out. It's a heating element that heats a line where the bend will take place. If you call Tap Plastics (the company) and ask for one, they'll know what you're talking about.
