two people with the same heat guns would make this job go pretty quickly. If only one person is doing this, I would suggest heat from the outside while bending. But, that little bit of haze would buff and polish right out.
@@MuscleCarChappy Hair dryer would have worked for a 2nd heat source. If u haven't tossed the old one yet you should save it and go buy some headlight lens polish and spend alittle time and fix the old one. On a different note, it`s not likely we are related but the name makes one wonder.
Besides the Watermark, Why didn't you just buff the window. We do it everyday on aircraft, even lexan which is the toughest of the plastic materials. And yes, you can buff it to perfection without any swirl marks whatsoever. 600, 800, 1000, 2000, then buff as you would clear coat. Sometimes you don't need all those grits, you might be able to start with 1000.
So your telling me that instead of paying a professional company who has all the tools and a shop dedicated to making the windshield for $150 and all you have to do is pick it up when it's ready....you would rather spend time going and purchasing the Plexi, then bring it home , cut it to size assuming you have the tools to do so pull out the heat gun assuming you have one handy. Heat it up for who knows how long to try to get the shape you want by guessing Just to save $10???? Maybe I'm missing something here but that doesn't make much sense.....
Good Video, If you mark console and plexiglass in the middle, you won't have to trim. Work from center out. Was also thinking if you removed a section from the middle of the Old windshield, the width of twice the plexiglass thickness, attach with strip of wood with countersunk flat screws, you could use the old one for a mold. Radius would be slightly Larger, have to make sure the new Radius will work. Would be on a table Flat son when the sides are heated, they drop into place.
...or a few dollars worth of headlight polish and rags would make the original windshield a lot less "messed up". Of course, most boaters own a boat because they need a hole in the water they can throw their money into, so I guess throwing a perfectly good windshield into a landfill is part of that.
Saved himself $150? Only if he doesn't use a jigsaw to trim it! If he does, he'll be spending the same again to buy more plexiglas and do it again, this time using a cutting implement that moves in only one direction. I have found a good, simple way to cut and trim plexiglas, or perspex as we call it in Australia, is to use a cutting disc in a spindle in an electric hand drill. You mark the cut line with a thick felt marker and cut a channel into the perspex beside the marked line, at least double the thickness of the cutting disc, to ensure the disc doesn't 'catch' in the channel. Naturally, the perspex needs to be held firmly by someone assisting you. You move the drill back and forth perpendicular to the disc to widen the channel and along the cut line progressively.
It would be easier to fix it with headlight restoration kit, not store kit, but professional kit. If done correctly it should look brand new. ***Plastic Only no glass*** FYI. Good Luck

The comments on this are pretty telling of society. You have your "glass half full" people who can keep it positive and learn from something or offer constructive criticism, ...and then you have your "glass half empty" complainers who went out of their way to insult someone cause of something as petty as a watermark logo. A see thru watermark at that. Unbelievable. ..the watermark was not ideal but take a deep breath...it's free content. 🤣
A heat gun? Seriously? I made literally hundreds of those types of windshields in my 33 years in the business and that is not the way to go about that unless you don't care what uneven heated bends look like. Not to mention uneven stresses from uneven heating that may cause that windshield to crack in time. That should be done on a strip heater to get professional results.
Obviously he isn't in the business, let alone for 33 years. I think he's just an average guy trying to save a few dollars and help others save a few dollars too. I know where to buy a heat gun and plexiglass less than 10 min from my house, and the strip heater I saw for bending plexiglass on a quick google search was almost $500 on ebay. I'm sure that you know what you're talking about from a professional level, but I think context is important here.
