This is due to how tightly engrained it is into how their systems work. The issue is extremely complex, period.

It should be like this, if a company isn't going to maintain a product or make it available for purchase then it should be publicly released. Imagine "buying" or "investing" in a software (whether it be a videogame or work program) to find out you can't use it anymore because the company behind it stopped existing or they decided to remove it entirely and hence not allowing you to use it because it requires internet connection.
