Advanced Linear Devices has released a new product that easily balances series connected mosfets. This is my first time trying them out, and with a little fine tuning on the value of mosfet I use, they work perfectly.

Love that humanizing moment of keeping in the typo'ed datasheet! This is great info, thanks for making this video!

Hi there, I really loved your series on the supercap / LiFePO batt. setup. I got the batt, charger, some supercaps, the OLED products, etc. I know how the series cap over-voltage protection works, but, with the SAB presented here, I need more detailed data and diagrams. Can you tell me where to look or find detailed information on the operation of these ALD chips for various numbers of series supercaps. Also, how critical is it to use these? I want quality circuits. Thanks,

I want to build a smaller copy of the a maxwell ESM. This looks like a great balancing solution, but I'm not sure about the charging circuit. Will any old boost/buck converter with adjust voltage and current limiting do the trick? What else would I need? Some kind of protection circuit?

Which model SAB Mosfet I should use for balancing 5 caps 3V 600F Amperics module and do you have a schematic. Also I noticed you're using a PCBoard on which this mosfets are soldered.

Can these be used for lithium hybrid supercaps, which have a max. voltage of 3.8v.? I have 2 parallel strings of 3 X 220F, 3.8v. supercaps in series. Looks like I might need 12 SAB-MOSFETS. Seems like a lot.

How would the data look if there wasn't a balancing circuit? What kind of spread would one expect?

That was really everything I wanted to see. I want to use two 300F 2.7V +10% -5% charged at 5V from USB. I can get 2A with a 3.5A USB switch and a usb-uart from Conrad which can supply 2A if the switch will give it. I did my calculations and with 1 cap 110% and the other 95% I have a worst case of 2.683 so I probably don't really need load balancing. If I use ald810025 it will kepp both caps at 2.5V which is perfect in tolerance for 2.7 (2.85) caps?
@franciscagney6133
@franciscagney6133 5 лет назад
Avtually I've just realized I should use ald810026. That will prevent any cap going over 2.6, but if they're closely balanced enough the FETs will never switch on. Is this correct?

If the MOSFET only conducts past a certain voltage then your stack isn't being balanced past a certain voltage. Sounds problematic. Is there a solution to this? Or am I missing something. Would the useful energy past a certain voltage not be practical anyways? Even with a buck-boost converter

I’m having a tough time finding a readily available circuit/board for my Maxwell 2700F /2.5v caps. I see 2.7v stuff out there all over eBay and the like? I’m not a genius at this but I feel I at least need some crude protection even if the dissipation is more than one would want. These big caps can be dangerous, I’d like to error on the side of caution even though there might be some loss. Thanks.

I think they are marketed as 2.7V more then anything else ... a lot of them use a TL431 .... if they are 2.7V variants you can knock the 2 resistors used to set the trigger voltage off and shunt out the first resistor ... that way the built-in reference 2.5V is used. hope this is still usefull!

Can i ask a technical question... The Mosfet is labeled with C1- C6.. but you didnt have all the wires listed from each capacitor. Im assuming because you have them in series.. Although Does it really matter how you have it wired.. for it to do its job?
@madelectronengineering
@madelectronengineering 5 лет назад
Yes, wire it up just like a port on a 5s or 6s lipo pack balance port.

"that easily balances series connected mosfets" ... you mean that easily balances series connected supercapacitors? is that an ald810026? where did you buy them? what was the price?

I got them from mouser, around $3 each.

Why are the cells balanced at 2.9V ish when you say in the introduction that the SAB MOSFET package you selected was designed to balance the cells at 2.6V? Also, what is the spec of the capacitors as one is charged to just over 3V.....That seems a bit high for a supercap which is normally limited to 2.7 or 3.0V absolute maximum.
@rainzer0
@rainzer0 2 года назад
They do come in 3volts or higher. 2.7v is just very common. If you charge a 2.7v rated cap to 3v it would start the degrade and the graphed chart would show bad cells. The way the IC works is it basically top balances the cells. Any deviation above the rated voltage it would start to pull power to the lower cell. It pulls exponentially faster every .1v So you have to choose the correct voltage rated IC for you application.

can something like this be used to balance lithium cells like 18650's?
@madelectronengineering
@madelectronengineering 7 лет назад
+Henry Sohbatian possibly, but lithium cells have a much higher capacity then supercaps. I would think that there is a better option available to actively balance lithium cells.

Research "switched capacitor battery balancing/equalization". It's a very efficient charge distribution/balancing scheme that does not "dissipatively drain" any excess charge on a cell, but "passes it along" to other cells by taking small bites of energy from a cell with "excess" in a switched capacitor, and connecting it to a "needy" cell. (an electronic form of "wealth distribution"... works well in electronics, not in society though)

How do you feel about making the design shared on OshPark? Or, better yet, since I only want one or two to try them out- how would you feel about sending me a couple for a small contribution to your beer fund? :)

And how does this little chip waste 1A charge current at 2.6V which makes 2.6Watt? I dont see any heatsink????
@madelectronengineering
@madelectronengineering 7 лет назад
1mA, not 1A.
@illchmann
@illchmann 7 лет назад
Mad Electron Engineering , 1mA charge current would take forever, or even the leakage current is higher then 1mA.
@mosfet500
@mosfet500 6 лет назад
Yes, you're absolutely right, these chips only work on leakage current over time, they can not balance two capacitors that have, say, 1V differential voltage, they will burn up. They are strictly for leakage currents!

So this is not an alternative to balancing boards using "waste resistors" to balance voltage across serially connected caps. I didn't get the usefulness of this.

Much better than the LED/resistor type ladder balancer that gets maybe .3 vdc spread...this keeps it alot more even...I see on data sheet it can only balance 3 caps, how do you get it to balance more? Just daisy chain? acte-uk.com/files/cache/c9c04c5356f7eb3f9357b8b2f9cdfb7b_f1310.jpg Great video and great find!!!
@madelectronengineering
@madelectronengineering 7 лет назад
+Brian C there's many examples in the datasheet. You can daisy chain them as long as you want, just don't exceed 15vdc over any one chip. They come in dual and quad mosfet chips.
