Eddie, being a retired Electrical Engineer and EMI Engineer, I find it interesting that most of design problems occur in power system. Younger Engineers these days have limited understanding of this system. No software to modify to fixed the problems. They just throw it away until it bites them in the ass, then they have to learn by trial and error. Your videos help by giving a sound starting point. Thank you for your effort. I like the full path from concept to product qualification using dedign, simulation, and test. I especially like simulation and testing to see how well your simulation compares to the test results.

I am no engineer but I like flyback converters and other SMPS things. I often need to charge large high voltage capacitors to do some fun stuff, and in DCM flyback manages it somewhat consistently, thou there are limitations. I often look for ways to improve efficiency or just understand what is going on so your content is much appreciated.

You have so much knowledge to share about this stuff, please do not hold back on this. Personally, I usually skip the product review video's as they would only be interesting in case I am in the market of buying a similar product.

This kind of video is among my favorite kinds of videos you produce. Should we trust readings that come from instruments that come from a company called, 'Fluke'? The fact is that I have a number of older fluke bench and portable DMMs and they're not particularly reliable. Even after the switches have been cleaned and coated with deoxit they will occasionally not read at all.. I have to fiddle with the push buttons and rotary switches to get a reading. Regarding your mention of the safety concerns when working with flybacks. It reminded me of a funny story. Decades ago a friend of mine and I were working on the bench on a voltage doubler circuit and as it turned out that cap we were using for doubling blew up. We were not wearing safety glasses but should have been. After the loud 'crack' we looked at each other and we had the sticky bits of the cap internals stuck on our faces, in our eye brows and as soon as our eyes met we roared laughing.

Thank you! I know what you mean about the switches and such - as a product that costs so much It would have been nice to use sealed switches and pots. That's a great story. I often forget to put on the glasses, but at my bench now I do wear them more often as I am testing so many products that I didn't design or select the components - so I'm a bit less trusting;)

Nice video! If you could snake a wire through the transformer core it would be interesting for people interested in the magnetics to look at whether the core is being fully reset and how close the core is coming to Bsat when you are operating at rated power. Actually, there are probably only a handful of us interested in this, so you should probably stick to things that more people are interested in. By the way, I love your blast shield and full face mask! I have a non-transparent blast shield and always wear goggles when I am blowing things up but it would definitely be better to be able to see what's happening. As an aside, I used to visit a military facility in White Oak where they were developing early Lithium batteries and they used a brick wall as a blast shield. Every time I went back, their test facility was a little smaller, and the rebuilding cost was so high they ended up shutting down the facility!

One thing about a Flyback that needs to be said its power is limited up to 250W to ~96% (intervaled mode). best suited for small things.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 11 месяцев назад
Thanks! That’s true - the Flyback really likes lower power applications. Going as high as 200 Watts is pushing it:)

Hi Eddie have you heard or seen 4wires power supply module? It's a Chinese product we use for repair. We use it to fix flyback topology smps.. for example if the power mosfet & pwm ic is busted normally its hard to find those kinds of components and its expensive if you buy a new smps here in our country. The 4wires power module is very practical and easy to use for us instead of looking for those busted components, it makes the job easier, I would like to hear your take on that if you find it interesting..

Yes I am. Sorr about the delay. I thought I had a project that someone was going to pay me to design - which I could do both in parallel. I don't think I'm going to wait for that anymore.

Nice i didn't know that ic, it's old it's in the unitrode product data book fram 1997, i have a sch from sony a DVD where they have made a activ clamp without a ic
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog Год назад
Thanks for your feedback! It is funny or actually sad that some of the TI engineers today don't even know how some of these Unitrode products work. They hire engineers straight out of school now so that they don't have to pay the high salaries - but then they get what they pay for. The IC designed for active clamp converters have the timing built in so that these converters operate correctly and are much easier to design;)
@eriklethdanielsen3968
@eriklethdanielsen3968 Год назад
@@KissAnalog the benefit of a activ clamp is when you have multiple output, when you put a lode on one output the other output is pretty stable. with a rc clamp the the other output inces.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog Год назад
Thanks but I think you meant the benefit of the flyback is in the stability of the outputs when one is loaded. The ‘active’ portion mostly benefits the input side for efficiency and EMI. Essentially acting as an active snubber/clamp.

How many electronic engineers still design analog circuits? And RF circuits? Its a shame the generation that knew Fourier Transforms, Laplace, Bessel Functions, impedance matching, Smith Charts, etc. is disappearing.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog Год назад
Great Feedback! This is so true! It used to be that you could contact an applications engineer (say from TI) and get good information. Now, they don't want to use experienced engineers and instead get new grads so that they can pay less.
