Just once, when they're wearing blindfolds, I'd like someone to hand them a live otter each instead of a guitar. Just for the hell of it.

I love the fact that a guy who owns and runs the best guitar shop in the country and who personally owns tens of thousands of pounds worth of Gibsons, USA Fenders, and collectable tube amps will often get less of these right than if you just flipped a coin at random, AND has no problem admitting it! Guitar players need to take themselves a hell of a lot less seriously and be honest with themselves that most of these cork-sniffing opinions (tube is always better than digital etc.) are just born of bandwagon insecurity, outdated info, and memes. It's an amazing time to be a musician in terms of affordable gear and technological advances, the quality gap between a £400 guitar/amp and one that costs £4000 is getting smaller and smaller.

So basically active pickups on a clean tone sound like passive pickups with a compressor pedal.
@zelenilum290
@zelenilum290 7 лет назад
They react similar, but where as the preamps in active Pickups are more often then not designed to stay neutral/not change the tone, compressors tend to colour the sound quite a bit.
@JanneOksanen
@JanneOksanen 7 лет назад
Basically yes. It's the same as having a clean boost pedal, it's just built inside the guitar. Your signal hits the amp's input harder so there's less headroom resulting in a more compressed sound.

I was ignorant of "active or passive" till this week when I bought a Epiphone SG G-400 (with after market EMG 81s)cheaply after the guy admitted it seemed to have electronic probs. New strings and 9V battery and it sounds great. And I now know about Active and Passive - previous owner obviously didn't.

@rickfeith6372
@rickfeith6372 7 лет назад
If that's your holdup....it has no merit. The batteries last forever. Even a full time musician can get a year no problem with one guitar with 2 humbuckers. I can personally attest to this, as my 93 ESP has a pair of 81s. The ONLY thing that's different is you have to unplug the guitar when its not in use. When I change batteries (RARELY) I check the old one on my tongue and its still strong. Every time. If you love the active tones, don't let the battery hold u back. Cheerio.

@jimsimmons2674
@jimsimmons2674 7 лет назад
Shadowsoken,you should try reversing your EMG pickups,put the 85 in the bridge position and 81 in the neck position,i did this with my epiphone SG and it sounds better to me,the 85 in the bridge gives a better low end but still has good clarity and the 81 in the neck is less muddy sounding and great for OD crunch and blues tones. If you heard of Andy James this is how he has his EMG pickups positioned.

Active pickups for me. I always told myself I'd never use active pickups ever. I owned a Rickenbacker 4001 for 5 years and I needed a 5 string bass for the projects I was doing. I was skeptical about the active EMGs. Needless to say the Rickenbacker didn't get used much at all after that and I eventually sold it. A $650 ESP LTD F-415FM with EMG 40DC pickups replaced a $1800 Rickenbacker 4001. Let that sink in...

LOL Poor Captain with the volume controls! I just got my first E-II Eclipse last week and spent the first five minutes complaining of the same thing! Why isn't the neck p'up volume the top knob and bridge middle! Haha!
@Masterfighterx
@Masterfighterx 7 лет назад
Reason in that case: Players perspective. Main pickup for many there is the bridge, so ideally thats the closest knob. But yeah traditionally it's the other way around, I even think they do it the ''right'' way when its 2 Vol. Also, if you get the Eclipse I that is more traditional (4 knobs in the right config, and more traditional horn) then it's like a regular Les Paul

f u n k j u n k . n e t they'd have a few tonal qualities like passives. it'd still be an active and sound like such. imo actives sound more digital/sterile than passives, but they are great in lots of ways so bridging that gap isn't the worst idea

@sluggdiddyyddidgguls
@sluggdiddyyddidgguls 5 лет назад
If that were actually true..there would be no way that so many prominent guitar players choose them over passives. I get that there is a difference, but that is more about the selection of the active pickup and settings on it, the give away I think rob was actually listening for was the difference in output volume..to me that was the only glaring difference.

This is actually a really good demonstration of why its important that you isolate variables. I think Rob had this nailed from the gate but Lee was very interested in keeping up with the context clues- which guitar was being played at what time- which indicates he wasn't really able to tell the difference by tone alone, but needed something else to inform his decision. If you claim a certain variable makes a difference in tone, then if that is to be credible, you have to be able to use your ears to *ACCURATELY IDENTIFY* said differential without anything else informing your decision. What we see here from Lee is an example of economized guesswork, which indicates his preexisting beliefs about active vs passive may not be entirely rational.

I'm not an EMG hater,and in fact I've owned several guitars with the 81/85 combo. That said, this video pretty much confirms all of the stereotypes of EMG pickups: they just had a cold and sterile sound when compared to the passives.
@aliensporebomb
@aliensporebomb 7 лет назад
If I'd done the test I would have set the tone control on the EMG set back to two thirds or between two thirds and 10 whereas with the passives I've had them set to have tone on 10. It would be hard to tell then.

I don't really care much for the argument about active pickups being cold and sterile, no dynamics, yadda yadda. I think they can sound just as good as anything else in the right context, depending on how the set is spec'd out. I just don't like active pickups because I don't like having to deal with batteries in my guitar. 😝

I love how politely Chappers explained to Lee how he knew which was which at the end. He basically said "Im a touring musician and your a fucking salesman that's how I knew" but ever so politely to where I almost didn't pick up on the insult lol.

Rob: hey Rabea, when you give us the guitars, give me the active and give Lee the passive, ok, that way I can win, I can shout active active active before Lee's even plugged his in and I can win and look great... ok, mate? Rabea: but that wouldn't be a fair test, it Rob: I'll give you £10 Rabea: £10? Rob: and longer solo spots at gigs. Rabea: £10? and longer solo spots at gigs? Here's what I heard: The EMG's were brighter and compressed. The Seymour Duncans were warmer and dynamic. The slope on the EMG's volume pot was also different, it backed off more slowly at first, then dropped off suddenly, it sounded like. The passives' volume seemed more predictable; the sound dropped off at a more uniform rate throughout the sweep. I can understand guitarists developing a preference for either style of pickup--they both have their strengths and weaknesses. Someone who demands a quiet pickup with little noise and an even, dependable level will probably like the EMG's, especially if they like a bright tone. Someone who likes to fiddle with the volume knob a lot between rhythm and lead (or just in general, for various tones) will probably go for the passives, especially if they like a warmer, rounded-off timbre. As for me, in general, I would want a passive guitar for recording and maybe informal jams and small-time gigs, and active for touring where you kind of never know what the quality is going to be of the electricity your rig is going to be required to work with.

Used pretty much every major active pickup brand going before becoming a passive pickup guy. Seymour Duncan Blackouts have great distorted tone while lacking somewhat the picking dynamics you get from passives, as well as having very nice cleans. EMGs less impressive distorted tone but great cleans again. Then I discovered Bareknuckle pickups.

Compression! It's all about compression with the actives.... they compress the signal while the passives don't. That's what Chappers can hear in an instant. Lol, I can't imagine how many pickups he's spent time really listening to in the last decade!

I'll be honest, I wasn't quick enough to play along and whilst I could hear a difference, it didn't really feel "good" or "bad" to my ear. That said, I reckon I would have a VERY different experience playing them. Good video, and props to Lee for being honest about his biases. Good man.

First, I play clean 99% of the time (Western Swing, Country, Jump Blues, Swing & OLD Blues, etc. Next, Rob Turner (CEO & owner @EMG) is a good friend (he's a drummer) and we played together regularly a few years ago ('till I moved to the Pacific Northwest), but since EMG's were for Metal or so I thought), I had never used them. I was building one of my early Turbocaster Tele-like guitars, and mentioned it to Rob. He said "Let me put pickups in it!" I said NO! I don't want hard rock pickups in it! He kept after me, so I finally said OK. He took it up to the factory in Santa Rosa (actually Petaluma back then), and his guys actually installed them in my guitar. He gave it back, and when I plugged it in, I was FLOORED! It was SO clean and articulate, with WONDERFUL tone thru my Deluxe Reverb, and my Blues Junior, AND my $79 Kustom practice amp!!! Turns out, they were prototypes for the T-52 Retro-Active Tele set that Rob cooked up with Vince Gill, using his famous '52 Tele! I've put EMG's in every Turbocaster Electric Guitars instrument I've build since, along with every acoustic, electric, and archtop I perform with. I also got to participate in the development of the new JMaster series pickups for Jazzmaster guitars, using prototypes for about a year and a half, and then production models since, in my TJM Deluxe and TJM Deluxe Hollow models (I'm now performing with TJM #5 now)! I still haven't played ANY passive pickups that measure up to the EMG's!

At the risk of being flamed, the passive knocks the crap out of the active in my opinion (insofar as my speakers can pick up from the video), it's the difference between a processed Kraft cheese slice and a full on Blue Stilton! Besides, passive were/are the choice of all my guitar heroes, EVH, RR, Nuno, EJ etc, who fights the active corner? Kirk Hammett LMAO!
@Arkery
@Arkery 7 лет назад
Kirt Hammet Mark Knopler (so spelled wrong lol) David Gilmour, and many many Jazz players.) If you're after super clear cleans EMGs are the way to go in terms of clarity and cleaness. Drive is where I feel passives win out, actives kinda compress the sound and that makes some people feel like they are lifeless. To each there own though, Whatver makes you rock right?!
@thegypsykidsband6044
@thegypsykidsband6044 7 лет назад
its because they compress everything at the start, even for a clean tone. My philosophy, (which i am not saying is right or wrong, just another perspective) is that I'd rather have the most open sound to start with, and be able to vary or increase my compression via pedals and amps.
@likeanuuk6612
@likeanuuk6612 7 лет назад
+stratmanuk not much risk of getting flamed when you say the most popular opinion. though really, when you say all your heroes use passive, its not that fair of a point because actives are much rarer, so statistically of course more guitarists you like will use them.

David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler used EMG's for electrical reasons though, not because they preferred the tone of them. Playing huge arenas with lasers and massive cable lengths back in the 80's made regular singlecoils too noisy. Given the option they both use passives, which is why in most pictures you see of them they're using passives. I use EMG SA's in my main guitar so I don't hate them, but giving them credit for the super-clean tones of Gilmour and Knopfler is just misinformation. They're not that clear nor clean in my experience and the tones you love from Floyd and Dire Straits records were most likely made with passive singlecoils.
