I think his argument just lacks a bit of consideration of other factors. Yeah maybe some people might create a character that resembles their looks but I don’t think it’s the majority. I think people. Hose their characters by much more standards then “I want myself in the game”. My best friend (male) ALWAYS chose to play female characters in the soulsborne games. I (female) almost exclusively play male characters because I want my character to fit the story, environment and the task at hand. For me it doesn’t feel right to play a female character in dragon age because I’m up against a serious threat that requires my character to be physically strong, an exceptional leader and a terrifying monster when he needs to be. So I chose to be a dark qunari warrior. And I think for me it’s just the archetype of the hero or warrior that influences me when creating my characters. And since this archetype is a predominantly male archetype my characters are almost exclusively male. Only character I chose to play as a female was a recreation of lady Maria from Bloodborne after my first playthrough cause I wanted to experience her story. And I played her in Elden ring after my first playthrough (as a male). So yeah..

I'd imagine you'd have breast milk at work because you have to use a pump every so often, wait a few hours, then use it again. If you spend 8+ hours a day at work, makes sense to bring the pump with you, and use it in the restroom or something. Takes time for your body to make milk, so you have to stick to a regular schedule to make enough for your baby.

I do agree that a majority of people would play characters that represent them if given a choice. This is especially so in games that tallow extensive customization. I only disagree that it is an 80% number. I think it is more like 60%. A lot of players have fun simply making original characters that fit narratively, reference memes (like giga chad), or don't want to fall into the stereotype of making a self-insert. In general, I think the argument stands, everyone likes to imagine themselves to be the hero.

@albertjohnston1026
@albertjohnston1026 Год назад
@@jarroncarlton Exactly. I think Asmon just needed to say it differently. "All else being equal, people tend to pick characters that look like them". This is the take. People play as orcs? Sure, but orcs play differently than humans, and no one said that looking like yourself is the top priority. What about the heroes in Apex? Those heroes (afaik) have different abilities. Obviously having fun takes priority over looking like yourself. People play as women? Maybe it's just me but I tend to play first as myself for story games and then if I play it again (Mass Effect for example, where I play a guy first), I'll play as a girl so that the voice acting feels fresh (because fun/freshness took priority). I did go with the default white dude in Fallout 4 (I'm mixed race), but that's because IMO it's somewhat the intended face for the male character, and the voice matches the face. Same for the female character. But the first time I play Starfield? Yeah, I'll be going with a semi-black man, to match myself. Probably, anyways. 80% chance :D

The whole “your race determines the character you play as” arguement really depends on what type of game your playing If I’m playing a customizable rpg, my character is going to be black. If I’m playing a fighting game or hero shooter like overwatch, the race of the character is the least of my priorities. Edit: in a fantasy rpg, I’d choose a race based on how cool it looks and the gameplay potential. But In a game where there’s a limited amount of character customization (fallout) my character will almost always be black.
@Ukulisti
@Ukulisti 2 года назад
I am honestly curious. If you have the option to create a character, do you really always try to re-create yourself or an image of yourself? Aren't RPGs about roleplaying? Creating a fantasy that isn't necessarily real and playing in it? I get that sometimes you want to have a player-insert, but do you really ALWAYS create yourself? Does your stance change if the character appearances have stat differences (WoW racials), or would you still choose a black human? Also, you said that "If I’m playing a customizable rpg, my character is going to be black" and "There are people like me that just plays whatever character looks the prettiest". So do you choose your character based on your race, or being aesthetically pleasing / looking nice? I'm a white Northern-European and live in a very racially homogenous country. So I never thought about race growing up, and rarely do even now. I don't identify as [my race], but instead as the sum of my personality traits.

Funny enough on either side of the spectrum of Skin tone matters or it doesnt, both will generally reach the same default conclusion. Whatever you are irl.

Classic case of non-empathy or obsessive self-insert. Nobody is arguing that the mmo fanatics of Asmon's stream play diverse characters, but if you put the average person in front of a MMO character select screen, they would make a character of their own gender and race, it's not fucking rocket science man. You do whatever you want, but don't act like you represent other people because you're insecure about your decisions. I tend to make my characters unique and diverse as I can, because I come from a D&D background and I enjoy challenging myself in the creation of a character, but I don't argue that the trend among the vast majority of people is to self-insert. have some sense. It's pointless to have a discussion about something that has pretty much been confirmed as true forever, if you start bringing up fantasy races you're just debating for the sake of debating, and nobody like a wise-ass.

About the breastmilk stuff. Some might find hilarious other people stealing it or not understands why is it a big deal for some and why mothers have it in the office. If someone already wrote it down then sorry. 1. Mother's who still breastfeeding, need to collect the milk frequently (Usually 3-4 hours, but it depends on a lot of factors.) or it will have consequences: if you don't do it your body will stop producing it and the more problematic one you will leak. Sounds stupid but it's really embarrassing so you need to be cautious about it. And you need a peaceful place to do it where no one bothers you. 2. Who stole the milk actually robbing a baby from his/her food. And stealing from children is really low level. 3. Breast milk expensive and a lot mother struggleing to produce it. So they try to collect as much as they can to be able to give the most for their little ones. Hope I helped with this exploration.

@@MoonTurky no, it explains a lot. Most people don’t know how breastfeeding works, physiologically. It’s not easy and you have to pump every few hours to keep your supply. Newborns eat every 2 to 4 hours. Also it’s more difficult to get the milk to drop with a pump than with a nursing baby, so you need to have a relaxing place so you can focus. Not to mention the baby formula shortage that is happening. Stealing the breast milk is just cruel. Women want to breastfeed and they want to keep their jobs as well, so a lot of employers offer a comfortable place where they can pump. It’s usually just an unused office with a mini fridge.

About the characters creations, i don't think it's that simple at all. The point of making a character looks like you, very often, is because the person wants to create and play a better version of themself, so there is a lack of self confidence somewhere too. There are also people who just want to play a realistic version of themself in the video game for immersion, but that's pretty rare in a mmorpg with fantasy components. However most of the person who does the opposite, they dont. Moreover, they are usually trying to create and play a character of the opposite gender because they want to play a character they would like to be with, like a phantasm.

Yeah… asmon is not correct in the character representstion thing, hes tunnel visioned with his own exp. In truth, the character represents what the player likes, not necessarily who they are. He is saying that the majority of people would pick the general baseplate appearance of their gender and race, 80% or higher, not all. You are now using your experience to conflict the argument that his take was of his own experience. He’s not talking about specific appearance, such as hair or eye color, but general representation. If you are a white male, you will most likely (not 100%) choose the general appearance of a white male. It’s the same with any other race/gender. If your an Asian female you’ll probably play as an Asian female. If your a black male, you’ll probably play as a black male etc.

So I tried to make him as close to me as possible, but much more masculine, a full set of hair, no glasses. After I broke up with the last girlfriend I had, I've been mostly making a female character. I can confidently state that my choice of character creation represents and reflects on my desires or lack of something from IRL. I wouldn't be surprised if ASM is right that statistically speaking, most people make characters that represent their race, but I think the bottom line is that *people just make characters that they want*. What influences that, which they want in a character, it can be many different factors. It doesn't need to be based on appearance. It just so happens that maybe most people just don't have anything better or original to want from a fantasy character, so they "self-insert", instead of making an interesting character. So you see a lot of people make characters of the same race, appearance or whatever. I think asm is on the right track with what he's going for, but he's wrong in regards to the bigger picture.

I have to say I disagree with asmon saying absolutely 100% without a doubt people pick characters who look like them and if you disagree you're ideological and banned. There's the aforementioned fact that people don't always pick human characters. It doesn't outright disprove your point granted, as you mentioned you're talking about only when people pick human characters, but it does show that people don't always pick whatever they think looks similar to themselves in the broader sense. Some people just want to be an orc or a dragon. Similarly there's the point on gender, there's a very large portion of male players that play as female players simply because they like the eye candy. I know more male players who are playing female characters than female characters playing female characters, and it's a very common meme in the MMO community, so it's clearly apparent that "similarity" is not the only deciding factor here. FInally onto the topic of race, this is where there's at least a debate to be had, but it's not as 100% obvious fact black and white as you make it out. Me personally, I wouldn't be *surprised* if what you were saying is the case as I personally do pick characters that are at least tangentially similar to my race (I'm asian so I usually pick asian/white characters), but there isn't really much to back up the claim (at least from what I could see I couldn't find any studies on it), so to state it is just a black and white fact and anyone who thinks otherwise is just dumb/wrong is a very disingenuous claim to make as we simply don't know if that is the case.

They just make their character to their appeal, whatever they think looks cool, or to their backstory like you said. If they're from the far north then they'll of course be white, if they're from the desert then they'll be black or tanned. The fact that Asmongold disregarded anyone who doesn't play human characters immediately disproves the whole point of his argument. The argument stems from people wanting to play characters that vaguely represent them and to say that his argument isn't about that is intellectually dishonest. If they're not playing human characters, then they clearly don't care that their character represents them which takes down his argument. Even if we just take people who play human characters, given how well known it is that a lot of guys play female characters, and a lot of girls play male characters for that matter, I'd say that alone amounts to at least 20% of people who play human characters. What I also dislike about his argument is that he said that he *thinks* that most people play as characters the same gender they are, even saying that it was a guess, and that he wasn't sure about it, then calls someone stupid for saying that they think more people play characters the opposite gender to them and that it's "common sense" even though he said himself that he wasn't sure. I generally agree with a lot of what Asmongold says but man was he off the rails this time. I think if he gave a more reasonable percent like 50-60% I don't think as many people would have really argued about it, but 80% is a hell of an assumption. I once suggested on reddit that the next mass effect game main character should actually be a batarian, because there's so much story potential there to look at the events of the previous games through the lens of a batarian, where someone like shepard is going to be a more complicated figure. No matter how much shepard united everyone against the reapers, their decisions killed 300,000 batarians, even if it was a 'choose the lesser evil' situation where the real culprits were people who didn't listen to shepard for too long. You could go so many ways. Factions within batarian society who have a more nuanced take and try to take lesson in how the event is an example of the consequences of government systems who don't do enough until it's too late, whereas other factions let what happened with Shepard validate their speciesism against humans. Then there's the whole fact that they're also pretty much a nomadic society now that's been splintered from so much of their civilization being destroyed. There's A LOT of potential there. But at least in the wee midnight hours when I posted it, everyone fucking hated this idea because no one wanted to play as a batarian. Because of course. People want to be able to choose what they look like and the ability to make characters that look like themselves. Playing as a fem shep or male shepard fundamentally feels different as well, even if you're fine with either.

In regards to the "people like to see themselves in games" argument, Asmon originally said it under the context of Overwatch where you have to choose between a set of pre-defined characters which implies one's own representation is a determining factor in which character you play as. That is where chat disagreed. Then Asmon shifted the argument under the context of roleplaying games with character creation. Which, yeah, a decent amount of people will play as themselves in roleplaying games. However the decision making process is not the same as choosing from a set of pre-defined characters in lets say fighting games, than it is from choosing how you want to create your character. A lot people like to represent themselves in roleplaying games. Not a lot of people care about whether or not a pre-defined characters represents them.

EXACTLY. It's so dumb how everyone worries so much about "representation" in every little thing these days, even in entirely fictional universes. It also doesn't even reflect reality, most of the real world is NOT diverse, there are many countries like Japan that are 80+% nationals, with very few outsiders. Or, for example, if the game setting doesn't make sense to be diverse(Like maybe half of the world got destroyed or you're in a very isolated place like a small Island) then that's perfectly fine. I wouldn't EXPECT there to be a wide diversity of races/colors/etc if I'm playing a game set in a small town in Greenland or Alaska or something, or maybe a game set in an Eskimo village.

@@TheOnlyGhxst My issue with this whole conversation is that people act like "over representation" is inherently bad or something. If people don't care about "representation" then it shouldn't matter if they made an entire cast indian for "no reason." They have nothing to do with the story, or they're character, they just happen to be Indian, and gay, and they're non binary or some shit. You can't tell me people wouldn't get triggered, even if the game was good. Complaining about adding these kinds of characteristics implies there HAS to be a reason for a character to be that way, and that they don't need a reason to be a cis straight white dude. The truth is that there doesn't have to be a reason, and it doesn't harm anyone to add representation to more media. Literally the ONLY reason to complain is that you have some weird feelings about whichever characteristics they're focusing on. In reality these companies are being scummy and trying to bribe sales with diversity, that's true. The problem is that this basically has no real bearing on the game anyway. If a game is bad, it was always gonna be bad, it just happens companies have ways of selling crap. There's no difference between a game having CGI trailers, "Forced" diversity, preorder bonuses (like NMS), etc.. There's nothing inherently wrong with a company using those things, the issue is companies use these to hide their lack of good games.

So, basically, if a lactating mother doesn't breastfeed often they basically get blues balls, but on their boobs. They get swollen, tender, sensitive and painful. They also start leaking after a while, and it's not just a fews drips either, it's full on stream squirting. Turns out japanese spicy cartoons get that part very accurately. Pumping will solve the problem. Also, if you don't stimulate your milk production by breastfeeding or pumping regularly, your milk supply will dwindle until it stops altogether. And, as any research will tell you, formula is just a very poor substitute for breast milk for several reasons.
@prico3358
@prico3358 2 года назад
14:50 it's very simple ... The breast produces milk depending on how much The baby demands. So if a baby sucks a Lot , The breast produces a Lot, if The baby drinks a little The breast produces less. So The baby should be on The breast every 2 or 3 hours , So The hours The Mom is at work, if she doesnt milk them , The breast is gonna think The baby doesnt need that many, so it produces less. Basically , if we didnt have fórmula or technology, milk production would be a matter of life and death. One day on not freeing The baby can very well dry The Mom. So it's like a machine... If You stop for a while , it begins to slow down. It's consistancy, You can't interrupt it or You Will spend a couple of days bringing it back up. So what working women do is, they keep pumping on schedule, and freeze or store Their milk.. so when she is at work , someone is bottle feeding it to her baby at The house. Tl:dr milk production is bases off demand. Women have to pump at work, because it would lower significantly milk production, enought to stop production altogether. It's a machine that uses demand to produce .. The breast expect to be sucked every 2 hours or so. If You are at work, The breast thinks The baby doesnt need it. Ps.. My baby momma's we're lazy fucks, i used to Hold The pump every night while they sleept, both of them did The same for All 4 kids. The breast never produced more than an ounce at a time, because they just didnt Care pump or wake up to feed baby. Yeah i learned All about breastfeeding because All My babys didnt tolerate fórmula and The lazy assholes of Mom skipped everything breast related. One of Them literaly tasked me to Hold The pump every night 2 or 3 times a night. Never got any of them to produce to baby feed. All My kids sadly had to endure Bad tummy aches All of Their baby lives. I used to have horrible FIGHTS because of this, i used to not understand and wish that i was The one with breast so i could feed them, i wouldnt have missed a single pump. So tl,:dr mothers cannot stop pumping or Their milk production lowers very very low that in The natural world The baby would die. Please if You are a woman, don't do this to your husbands, breastfeed your baby, please it's your job, not his.

While you do raise a good point about people playing themselves in RPG's, I think your missing a key point to why so many people disagree; An RPG, or even any game for that matter, it offers you a chance to play something, or someone other then yourself. When I play an RPG, or even D&D, I don't wanna play a character that acts, or looks exactly like me. Its basically the argument of saying "You can't play X, because your Y." RPGs are all about Role-playing, its in the name. Role-playing yourself is boring, and doesn't allow you to completely immerse yourself in the game. If I wanna RP a female charismatic gunslinger with a flexible moral compass, I should be able to. People don't really play games to remind themselves of who they are, they play games to escape, play them because it gives them a chance to experience something fun as a new medium other then themselves. While yes, people like characters who share similarities with them, it should not define them. I personally like human characters as I find them more easier to RP since I myself, am human. However, a friend of mine, who's very tall, black, and drinks, loves playing dwarves, who are short, heavy drinkers, and usually older then everyone else. I'm not playing a character because it reminds me of who I am, I'm playing a character because its different, its something I'm not IRL, and gives me a chance to immerse myself in a story or world through the lens of someone who belongs.

@@NazzyDragon That is true, I was speaking more in the TTRPG aspect, and less of the MMO. My point more or less being that not everyone wants to play themselves, or an avatar that looks like them. But even in general I always want to play as someone or something that in many ways is the complete opposite of myself. To say that a vast majority of people only want to play (or RP) as themselves, is simply not true, as statistically speaking its the opposite. There was a study done that compared men and women in RPGs and found when given the choice of picking a character, male or female, the men overwhelmingly picked female, and vise versa. Not to mention, during their gaming sessions, both men and women had adopted characteristics to fit their character. The men who chose to play as a female, naturally acted more feminine while they played. While the women who chose men, naturally acted more masculine during their sessions. Even in my my own games when I'm playing by myself, I find myself acting out or adopting certain characteristics that I normally wouldn't. Such as acting more witty when playing a "Charismatic" character. Or more willing to kill NPC's if I'm playing a character with "A flexible moral compass." All without even trying. When it comes to diversity in characters, I don't think a lot of companies realize that what they're doing when they're creating their characters with diversity in mind; Activision Blizzard with their diversity charts, all this scientific bullshit that gets roped into this... I don't think they realize that they're creating the equivalent of a stock photo, or a commercial that fails spectacularly at trying to depict a group of friends or something in a normal situation and you can just smell the paper that the diversity checklist was printed on from a mile away. It's blatantly fake, it's not real, it doesn't represent anybody, it's devoid of genuine personality, emotion, possibly even devoid of humanity itself... it doesn't come across as genuine. It's completely transparent that it's a product of a checklist. Unfortunately there's so much of this going on that I think a segment of the audience smells that bullshit even when it's not there, and to add onto that problem, it's also kind of a subjective thing to start with. There's no formula for spotting a stock photo... you just see it so much that you kind of know what to look for, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can spot one every single time. Eventually you get so jaded that you start thinking everything's a bullshit stock photo.

They make a character who isn't white or male and treat it like it's normal, because it is and SHOULD be treated as normal. Race, gender, sexuality: it's all a part of a person's identity, it shouldn't define why they're better or more privileged, because doing so only exasperates the problem society has with racism and inequality to begin with... something that a lot of self-proclaimed civil rights supporters/activists don't seem to understand.

i get what your saying. but the problem also lays within us as a community... being "woke" and offended because this or not is not represented. companies pick this up and try to come up with solutions which aren't ideal as u said.

We had a bunch of women that complained about the lactation facilities and they put a tv and nice chairs in the room and then fast forward months later there were women that were not breast pumping hiding out and watch tv during the work day in that room. they were mad at everyone for finding out that they werent doing their jobs and blame the men at the workplace saying that they were sexist for complaining about them not doing their jobs.

The shady (but honestly genius) thing about World War 2's loot boxes was that when you opened one, everyone could see you opening it and what you got from it. It was designed to induce envy.

The whole meme about wanting to look like your character is the biggest meme I ever heard, I played wow since release and I have yet to see a single person making a char that even remotely resembles them LOL
