Actor Adam Beach tells CNN's W. Kamau Bell that navigating the Hollywood machine while respecting Native American traditions is a tricky business. Watch "United Shades of America" Sundays at 10p ET.
Yes! This right here! Ask permission to use people's culture and back story. Something that Stephanie Meyers failed to do when getting famous from her use of the Quiletes Tribe. She made so much money from her depiction and didn't ask the tribe or even give any part of the proceeds or royalties to this tribe. Selfish
I love how all of us Natives have this nice soothing accent when we talk! I know the only reason why is because of our native language. If we didn’t speak English we wouldn’t even think we had an accent. But every native I met that speaks English has a nice soothing accent!
@@ThatCreeNative1 I think the original poster was referring to speech pattern or cadence rather than 'accent'. I think I got the point. Be open minded.
I met Adam Beach once in a hotel lobby when i was 13 or 14 and he was so nice and shook my hand and he signed my copy of windtalkers. One of my heroes 👍
Woah, Adam Beach. He came to my reservation in 2010 and i met him. He was visiting my school and was a pretty cool dude from what i remember, the movie he was telling everybody he was in was one of the twilight movies lol i have no idea which one but i was like “OMG adam can i have ur autograph” lmao
The more I look, the more I admire Marlon Brando for what he did at the Oscars. Hollywood is so deeply hypocritical when it comes to "empowerment" and representation.
What are the white folks try to do with the Native Americans today in North America? Are they try to destroy them, to not be alive today? I don’t like they wanted the Native Americans to be exited and gone. They’re just jealous with a hatred heart. Native Americans are beautiful people I have seen. Respect and love one another as we’re humans imperfect. Secondly, I am happy that Native Americans are still here and alive today.
@@ms.titianabab7133 their jealous because native Americans are the REAL Americans and everybody else is a immigrant and the native Americans remind them that they are immigrants and their ashamed of it even Obama mention it in one of his speeches when he was president that "unless your native American you came from somewhere else" that was his quote And theirs no one in the US I will respect more then native Americans I love their culture
He's such a talented man and his voice is rich and sensual. Since the first time I noticed him act, I already knew I would enjoy and support his movies. I was also proud to know he represents the people of this beautiful continent. 💛💛
Right on.. Everything I have ever seen Adam in including the first time he was a youngster I met him on the set of an ABC after school special he has always been honorable and respectful to all our Nations.
I actually prefer Adam Beach rather in contemporary movies/TV shows. I really liked him in Arctic Air and playing Officer Jim Chee. He's damn sexy in police uniform.
Native Americans in general are underrated for the wrong reasons because Hollywood wants the world looking at America like its always been a white Country when it's not
I fully agree with Adam.Every movie featuring native americans is set at the latest in the 19th century. They are a modern people and should be showed in modern times both on and off the reservations.
Rouskey Carpel hahaha you need to see more movies then.... because you are speaking about an actor who has been in these movies that you don’t think exist. How about the native community getting behind some movies of their own and stop wanting others to make them.
He was in squanto when he was very young though which would have been set in the 1600s And then there are other movies featuring native american in earlier eras: the new world, last of the mohicans ( I wanna say 1700s) ,pathfinder, and if you count apocalypto...I have seen a few set in present times an enjoyed them as well
@@mikewilson8882That's not a major motion picture.. Most people don't even know it exists... I like the movie too, but most major roles don't ever go to native Americans unless it's a stereotypical 1800's type role...
They like us in the 1800's! So true! The only roles I have ever gotten (except 1) was portraying a Native in, as we call it, leather and feathers. (ps the other roll was on an episode of Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman: Peyote Ugly episode)
Not true. Any negative options of natives come from ONLY natives. You guys are so far removed FROM amerocan society and culture ita sad. But Ameorcan people have no negative or positive Opinions about Natives. Just idnefferent . they're not eneoven into American society like they should be. No racism has ever been dealt Natuves way from whites, Blacks or asians, Hispanics ect. However, A few stories have surfaced of hostile Natives to Other races ON reservations that have made integrating, living in hospitable and unhabitable , which is sad....
I dont think want to see natives belittled. Can i get an example of this? I think they want natives in roles from the 1800s cuz natives were well known back then. Not many modern native stereotypes that can be applied to movies these days.
He is a badass actor and seems like a great person as well!! I really hope more Native Americans can get roles and not be tight cast into just a set of standard roles!!
The arm bump at the end is real rez and proud.. 😂😂 great interview.. being in the military I hardly see other indigenous people.. and some are surprised we’re still here.. interesting how we always get overlooked in America..
Dank Banana Google Native American and see what how they want the world to view us. That is why when we say we are native people think we are lying. I have never seen so much shit given to any other ethnicities. You say you're white, black, asian, east Indian, whatever and no one bats an eye. But say you're Native...and it's in with the trolls, and the afrocentrics talking about they're the true natives and others saying , "YOU DON'T LOOK NATIVE?!"
We like you now too Adam, I remember him from Smoke Signals, he is a national treasure.....wish they had of asked him to play Tonto instead of Johnny Depp
I would like to see the natives of North America shed the idiotic mistaken name of "Indian" that the European (Columbus etc.) foisted on them. They are not Indian and I think that they need to retain their own identity as a people in their own terms.
I heard someone once say that he likes it when white people call him "Indian" because it is a testament to the stupidity of Columbus and the first white settlers. Of course that was a personal opinion but I thought that was interestingly funny.
Simmer down Robert. The Spaniards did a whole bunch of fucking down in Mexico and nobody bats an eyes. Don't forget. Spain owned Florida, France owned Louisiana, we bought Alaska from Russia and most of the southwest from Mexico. The British people did a whole lot of traveling. Canada, Africa, Australia, etc.
It's a familial and endearing term natives use with native communities. It was a name given by our oppressors, so we use it in revolt, like black people use "n". We don't actually THINK we're Indian. It's noone's say what we call ourselves on our own terms and for reasons anyone non Indigenous cannot understand, nor worry themselves with.
Adam Beach is my HUSBAND!!! 😍 LOL, don't get me wrong, this Yokut Woman is head over heels in love with my handsome Po'lum. BUUUT, Adam Beach has been my movie star/Indigenous crush since I seen him in Smoke Signals as a lil girl!! 💜💜💜💜 #WeAreBeautifulIndigenous
@@crosbyllc5426 I do, because I’ve seen plenty of interviews, where he expresses the “moral” stance against playing outside of the actor’s “race.” He is full of dishonest takes on these things, based on a tiny lens and scope (he is a human being after all). “Hollywood,” must mean high budget movies, because there are many movies with NA/AI/NAIP playing roles in the modern times. And if people were honest, most peoples do not get big movies about them in modern times, and/or are limited to specific roles, including “white races.” Asking for a blessing from groups is respectable.
Am writing a novel w a native actor contemporary is a horror story etc just making my lead native because that's who I see in my head playing him nothing else
My father is from the Yaqui clan but our tribe is Issachar so-called Mexicans.. it's time to check ourselves and find out who our ancestors are!! Genesis 49:14-15 [14]Issachar is a strong ass couching down between two burdens: [15]And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.
i was 11 when i got the casting call for this film. i wish i could have taken it. my father met the actors as he worked for the native involvement sect in los angeles.
Roger Willie, the Dineh (Navajo) actor, who portrayed Charlie White Horse; the other Code Talker was excellent in this film he really balanced the quiete, stoic but not hostile role to Adam Beach's, Ben Yazhee who is friendly, talkative and outgoing.
Proud to have native blood.... would be happier if the true Native Americans got their respect. Also well as the Africa Americans...we were kidnapped and brought here. Columbus didn’t discover America, the Native people were already here. Columbus was a squatter.
I've heard it pointed out how many Indian roles in old Hollywood movies(westerns etc) were played by non Indian actors. Does anyone know if there were enough actual Native American actors to draw from during the 40s,50s and 60s in Hollywood? Were there enough Native actors in Hollywood back then to where there wouldn't be a need to hire non Native American actors?
its funny how the whorship and only recognize. the North American indians only, and exclude south, central , alaskan and even mestizo people from N.A status. even though they are the same people with variation of custums but same non the less.
Ingkisquatha _ what youre talking about is their traditions are different but as a race of ppl south /mestizos/and north american indians are the same. just like how europeans are the same as a race but have different ways .nothing different.
@@steadyadding8337 You are wrong in both examples: there are different types of native americans and I don't mean that they only have different cultural differences, I'm talking about facial features and different skin complexion. Also, europeans are not all the same just because they're from Europe. Southern europeans and nordic europeans are not the same, look at Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham, do they look the same to you? Europe too had different native people in the past or do you think everyone had a fair complexion and colourful eyes? The real southern europeans have the mediterranean look, that means different facial features and a darker complexion than central and northern european countries. Another example: Indians and Chinese people belong to the same continent, are they the same too?
This isn't just a problem for Native Americans. Half-Chinese Chloe Wang had to change her name to Chloe Bennet so she could get non-Asian acting roles even though she doesn't look Asian at all.
Hollywood mentality is really strange that they want to see generalization and stereotypical representation of other people of which mold they would like to see them in classification.
The only way an audience is going to know you’re a Indian and not a Hispanic in a movie is if the Indian character is wearing Indian attire or they say it in the movie. Hispanic people are way more common in the US than a full blooded Indian.
Adam Beach is a good actor. Why must CNN reduce him to the color of his skin, as though that's the sum total of his identity? Actors can play many roles, not just the ones whose melanin matches theirs.
