In the stock market, hedging your bets and/or mitigating risk is an essential skill, but as an actor, it can be a HUGE trap. Especially if you take that mindset into the audition process, or if you let it dominate you as you consider which educational opportunities are "worth it".

I hear you. I think what you're saying about saving money still applies to people who have the money for the '7 dollar coffee' to begin with. For some people, that money is just going to meet basic needs.

For sure. Everyone is susceptible to the “Starbucks factor”. Those with more disposable income probably have multiple things they’re spending too much money on. I know that’s happened to me over the years. I’ll suddenly realize how much money I’ve been slowly spending on ___, and when I look at a spreadsheet of finances, it smacks me in the face. Nothing easy about this career (or this life).

Love this. I’m taking a weekly class over this summer which cost me £1000. Last year I did a seriously life changing masterclass weekend which cost me £700. These investments are to remind me I can do this, I still love it and that my performances impact others and hold a deeper meaning to my humanity. Not booking can make you question that and tempt you to change yourself to please others and “win” a job and forget the inner child play which is the only reason this is my path in the first place. I’m not motivated by pursuing fame - its connection I crave (and that why this self tape era has me spending more money to achieve connection than at any other point in the last 15 years…it’s what artists need!!) New shots, new demoreel, considering a change in agent…it’s all a risk.

I found out on May 4th that I was randomly selected for further processing in the green card lottery. I am scared to death of losing my current well-paid job, low rent apartment and social safety net in Belgium to emigrate to the US. But as an actor I owe it to myself to try and broaden my horizon with the opportunities given to me.
