Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl made me want to jump through the screen when she tried to claim Melanie Griffith's idea. Ms. Weaver deserved Best Supporting Actress in that movie.
2008 wasn't Cate Blanchett's year. She did great performances, but the winners were very deserving, specially Marion Cotillard. And also I think Juliane Moore's performance in Far From Heaven is amazing. Todd Haynes' filmography is full of wonderful projects❤❤
Blanchett had recently won for The Aviator. After her double nods, she went on to win her 2nd Oscar for Blue Jasmine, where she had dominated the critics and industry awards.
My girl Sigourney Weaver should have won something that year for sure. Anyway, I still can't belive they didn't even nominate her for Copycat (1995), The Ice Storm (1997), A Map of the World (1999), Imaginary Heroes (2004) and Snow Cake (2006)
Emma Thompson was beyond magnificent in In the Name of the Father. I know that courtroom scene was a big scene but it didn't feel over the top even one bit, it felt like everything was really emoted from within. DDL was fire (as always) but without her that scene wouldn't have been this effective. Darn 1993 was such a strong year!
Good afternoon every one FYI ... Norman Jewison died earlier this week at age 97. He directed IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, A SOLDIER'S STORY, etc. While he never won a competitive Academy Award for direction, he did receive the Irving Thalberg Award, which is sort of an honorary Oscar. I hope during the "In Memoriam" portion of the Oscar telecast that he gets the last segment. I have a couple of commitments this afternoon so I will write more later.
Plus The Russians are Coming, The Russian are Coming, big Oscar nominees its year. He was on the forefront of the cvil rights movement and against the anti-Soviet hysteria when it counted.
Sigourney was a better choice that Genna but when it comes to Julianne Moore, she should won for The end of the affair not for the hours and Kidman was more a support role in that movie
The one I continually wrestle with is Julianne Moore in Far From Heaven versus Nicole Kidman in The Hours. They are equally brilliant. For me this would be a very good year for a tie like Streisand/K Hepburn in 1968. Furthermore, I would have given Moore best supporting actress for The Hours over Zeta Jones, easily.
@@oscarman42 Yes, very respectfully. I'm not a fan of Chicago and I loved Polanski's The Pianist. So you can see where my affections were that year and my disappointments.
In my opinion Jessica Lange would had won the Oscar for Frances if Meryl Streep wasn't nominated for Sophie's Choice and in another year Julianne Moore would had won the Oscar for Far from Heaven
Julliane Moore should have won for Far from Heaven over Nicole Kidman for The Hours. Nicole only won because of a prosthetic nose which stupidly in Hollywood is considered a transformative acting triumph.
For awhile, it was floating around that Colman Domingo had a slim shot at a double whammy with Rustin and The Color Purple. Now THAT would have been interesting - two double-nominees, and neither household names.
@@oscarman42 yeah, I wish there had been space for John Magaro from Past Lives. That was a hella tricky role to pull off. I knew he would never get in, his role is way too reserved. Ironically, if he had an Oscar-bait scene where he broke down or chewed the scenery, it would have cheapened the performance.
@@oscarman42 yes! If I remember correctly, Glenn Close enthusiastically applauded when Sigourney lost Supporting! Not knowing they'd both lose later (this is the one Glenn should have won, IMHO)
Emma thompson is one of the greatest british actresses, both of these are oscar worthy however hunter and paquin were worthy winners for the piano. Sigourney weaver should have won for gorillas, jodie foster should still have 2 oscars but for lambs and nell.
@@oscarman42Yeah Lange sort of won by default because it was a weak year but Jodie was much better. I wish “What’s Love Got To Do With It” came out later because Angela would’ve won
The year when Holly Hunter won, I think Emma Thompson, Angela Bassett and Stockard Channing also gave Oscar-worthy performances. I didn't like the movie The Piano, and I think Hunter deserved to win a few years earlier for Broadcast News instead. It's too bad that The Remains of the Day didn't win any Oscars, as it's a great film that deserves to be remembered.
@@oscarman42 Agree, although I was disappointed Julie lost, after I saw MC, wow, I was blown away, she literally encompassed and totally disappeared in that role. She was unrecognizable!
@@RobertPagano226 I've had a crush on JC for years and really wanted her to win. That said, she spent the entire awards season making "I don't care if I win" comments, and eventually the Academy took her up on it!
@@oscarman42 If they truly did & I hear the Academy does these things & took her up on that, that's ludicrous, because the award should be given for the performance, not comments said from a nominee.
Haven't seen those Sigourney Weaver films, they've been on my radar for quite some time. I will probably check them out soon! Emma Thompson and Julianne Moore are two legendary actresses and their nominated performances were outstanding, but they wouldn't be my personal picks. In 1994 I would vote for Angela Bassett and Anna Paquin, and in 2003 I think Catherine Zeta-Jones undeniably deserved that oscar and my best actress pick would be Salma Hayek in Frida, she was phenomenal! Cate Blanchett is my all-time favorite, she's just always incredible for me! I love her in Elizabeth: The Golden Age (even though the movie is kind of terrible), but Marion Cotillard was simply the best, the oscars easily made the right choice here. But as for best supporting actress, I just think that Cate Blanchett is so unique and amazing in I'm Not There, I think she should've won over the strong competition she had that year. Tilda Swinton was pretty good in Michael Clayton, but it's only her last scene that's really impressive. She's a beloved actress, I adore her too, and there was no frontrunner that year, but I just don't really like that win for her. I actually think that Tilda Swinton should've won for We Need To Talk About Kevin, a role she wasn't even nominated for! That is still weird to me and it's sad, because I think it's her best performance. Call me crazy, but out of the nominees for actress and supporting actress, both of my favorite performances are from Scarlett Johansson! It's just so unfortunate she didn't win anything. Dern and Zellweger had it in the bag, and while I think they are great, Johansson is just on another level, even in Jojo Rabbit, which some people say she shouldn't have gotten a nomination for. The scene from Jojo Rabbit shown in the clip is phenomenal and Johansson absolutely delivers. But Marriage Story is where she probably gives her best performance and at least for that, she should've gotten that deserved oscar. I hope she gets a chance to shine as an actress soon.
Well of course I would have gone for Salma Hyaek in Frida but Julianne Moore in Far From Heaven would have been a good choice as well. While I am not the biggest Scarlett fan I think she did give two amazing performances that year and maybe should have won for one of them .I didn't have a favorite that year in either category.
Yes . For a woman in Germany at that time to shield a child is remarkably brave . Plus she was a different kind of mother we usually get at awards time. Scarlett would have been a good choice.

Emma was superb in The Remains of the Day (and I believe it was a stronger performance than in Howards End too), I found Cate to be too theatrical as Dylan and glorious as QE I, love Julianne Moore but the her performance in The Hours was almost one note HOWEVER....she was robbed and should've won for "Far from Heaven", I didn't see either of Scarlett's performances, Sigourney was fantastic in both films and should've won for "Working Girl"!
But only Barry Fitzgerald can say the won an Acting Oscar and Lost an Acting Oscar in the same year for the same movie and the same role. He won Best Supporting Actor but lost Best Actor for 'Going My Way".
After that year, the Academy changed the rules so that would no longer happen. The rules were also changed to prevent an actor from being nominated for two different performances in the same category.
Barry Fitzgerald kept 2 more deserving candidates from being nominated/winning the Oscar that year and both were from the same movie. Fred McMurray & Edward G. Robinson from Double indemnity.
Similar to how i feel what they are doing with Robert downery jr and Ryan gosling right now I feel they did this with Renee zellwger and Scarlett Johansson back in 2020. With Robert and Renee they picked them as the front runners with the long overdue career narrative bc their performances are considered more fitting in the traditional Oscar acting winners history, they are much older in age despite the fact they professionally started the exact same time as their younger counterparts and the categories they are in lack stiff competition. But like how I feel Ryan should be winning way more and gave a better performance, I felt the same with Scarlett for marriage story, I personally feel her performance was just simply better than Renee while Renee did a great job especially in the emotional parts i felt she didn’t fully embody Judy garland especially with the speaking voice, the singing and physical posture. If you’re playing a real life person that you can copy, play and immersive their mannerisms, accents, postures, etc through public records you gotta embody them all the way through while also adding the emotional depth, range etc if that person, Charlize Theron for monster, Meryl Streep for Julia and Julie, Austin butler for Elvis, etc all did this, Renee just had the emotional depth and range not the full embodiment of Judy. So I definitely think scarlett was robbed I also think Sigourney weaver should’ve won for working girl and cate Blanchett should’ve won for im not there. For Julianne I preferred far from heaven she was in my second place after Renee for Chicago (FYI Nicole was fourth just one step above Diane lane so yeah) but for the hours, hmm not sure she did good but i thought Catherine zeta jones for Chicago and Meryl for adaptation were the best supporting actress front runners. Can’t say on Emma bc I haven’t watched either of her films.
The fact that ScarJo after all those years of being snubbed finally got nominated not only once but twice in the same year to lose in both categories... Little bit of bittersweet since both of her nominations were award worthy, I always had a weak spot for her JoJo rabbit character.... :'( I think y'all know why :')
It does. A lot of movies go into the Oscar race with the momentum then lose it at the last minute. Like La La Land, Banshees, Brokeback Mountain etc etc. Oppenheimer has the momentum at the moment but The Holdovers seems to be picking up pace now so momentum could shift for it to win Best Actor and Picture. @@oscarman42
It must be horrible to sit there and lose, not just once, but twice! And you have to paste a smile on your face and act gracious for the cameras. Bet these actresses went home that night and said, well THAT sucked
Can you imagine? Before Weaver, Oscar history was such that if an actor was nominated in two categories, he/she won in one. So it's reasonable to think that Weaver believed she would win at least once! I don't know how much of a good sport I would have been.
@@oscarman42 Perhaps the best performance by an actress in any role was given by Nicole Kidman. When asked for her reaction in NOT getting nominated for Best Actress for TO DIE FOR, she graciously replied "I wasn't good enough to make the cut." She was thought to be a lock for a Best Actress nomination.
Couldn't agree with you more in a video posted recently about my Supporting Actress choices. And you are so right - Weaver looked disappointed (kinda pissed actually - who could blame her?).
@@oscarman42 wasn’t she the first person in history to be nominated twice and not win? Also she won both Golden Globes (though Best Actress was a three way tie that year with Shirley MacLaine and Jodie Foster) and Working Girl was a huge box office hit so she probably felt she would win Unfortunately she probably split the votes with herself due to being a double nominee and with Joan Cusack in the category taking votes from her, I think she BARELY lost Best Supporting Actress to Geena Davis
To me Julianne Moore was extremely deep in The Hours but Catherine was equally deserving. Blanchett ok but not enough to won in both. Scarlett was very goog in Jojo instead for the Marriage she didn't even deserve the nomination!!
