I was 9 when I watched this. I was allowed to stay up late on Friday, think this was on at 9.00. The Grandma character was my favourite, very dry and witty. Looking at these clips now I can see her occasionally looking to the side. Possibly as a prompt for her lines. But she was 83 at the time. Very different to my own Northern Nana, whom I loved to pieces. She died the same year as this programme came out. Born in 1899, how I would have loved to have chatted to her as an adult about the first WW etc. About her time in the USA. She emigrated to America with my Grandad in the early twenties. But returned two years later because of lack of work. I would have soo many questions! I miss her still.
Indeed. I think we can only have the utmost respect for this old lady. More notable is Billy's trouble trying to keep a straight face when she delivers her lines. She must have been loved by the rest of the cast. I too was about 9 - when television took far more chances than it does now.
