On one hand this is a fantastic movie that absolutely deserves the accolades and success it has garnered. On the other hand it is a wonder that such a movie that plays with prophecy, politics, deceit and mysticism with little to no handholding had such success at all, which really speaks to Villeneuve's and his team's mastery of cinematic language.

Villenueve, in my opinion, is a master in the more cerebral sci-fi in cinema. (I mean Arrival proved, to me at least, that he was gonna be the right director for Dune when they announce it) And as you essentially said, this movie is yet another feather in his and his teams' hat to that point. Dune is an incredibly cerebral, thought provoking science fiction and man did he do a beautiful job finally bringing this amazing story to the screen.

37:19, Earlier you stated something like "the Harkonnen's are into some freaky stuff". You don't know the half of it. 😉 The Baron Harkonnen is the inspiration to Jabba the Hutt. But unlike Jabba, Baron Vlad doesn't keep around a bunch of slave girls. He prefers his playthings (in the see through gowns) to be androgynously masculine and young. I give kudos to the director for skirting around the unsavory aspects of the Baron's sexual appetites and dark fantasies that are explicitly stated in the book.

About the choice of child's gender; This order of women have deep control of their bodily functions and are able to control things that other humans simply cannot. In the book, it's also mentioned that the emperor's wife also chose to only bear daughters since she was part of this same sisterhood. I will say, after having seen the second part last night, this forst part feels like homework by comparison. I'm saying that as a book fan who also enjoyed this first part a lot. I'm listening to the soundtrack of the second film right now and I'm literally shedding tears over what the scenes tell.

Dune is from 1965, so it predates all the big sci-fi movies we know today. Frank Herbert did an amazing job with world building and just sci-fi concepts in general, such as lasers, the ornithopters etc. Almost all authors of the time when imagining computers were extremely off, they just couldn't comprehend how they would take off, grow and change the world. He brilliantly bypassed it with Dune simply by imagining a future where there is a law that states "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind", therefore all the mentat assistants that are trained to operate as if they were the computers.

20:12, its not really anymore dangerous than having a commoner fly. In the real world a lot of royals are pilots. Prince William, Prince Harry and their uncle Andrew were all pilots in the British military. Thirty years ago, a few Saudi princes flew combat missions during Desert Storm. As one of the princes told reporters "I'm only a prince because my father is a king. But these wings on my chest I had to go earn these on my own."

The question of whether or not Paul is the Lisan al Gaib is kind of a smokescreen. That prophecy was invented by the Bene Gesserit and planted so that the Fremen would receive the Kwisatz Haderach as a messiah. It’s all a method of control. That’s what the reverend mother meant by “a path has been laid.” It’s one reason I push back against the idea that it’s a white savior story. Paul is the protagonist but he and his family are not heroes. They didn’t slaughter the Fremen like the Harkonnen but in the end they were part of the same feudal system and planned to use the planet and its people as political tools, just like the Bene Gesserit, and just like the Harkonnens.

The book definitely touches on the idea that Paul isn't _the one._ It's very dense and has a lot of jargon that's difficult to keep up with, even with the appendix that defines all the special terms they use. If you do decide to read it before watching part 2, if you want a blind reaction for part 2 stop right after the fight between Paul and Jamis. I haven't seen part 2 yet, but there's some stuff that happens right after before the end of the chapter which could be a spoiler. That said, if you like the political stuff, there's a few scenes in the book that the movie skipped which touched on the politics of it. There's a lot more than was touched on in the film.

Great reaction Clariss. Love your attention to details. Jessica was supposed to be in her place as political move, but as a women she fell in love with the Duke. The Duke is a good man and leader. Hence, why all other feared him..because people followed him out of respect and love, not fear. She bore a son because she loved the Duke. This is why I love Jessica's (character) she is a witch but also a loving mother and woman. I also loved how when Jessica had to give her son the ring of his father. It was heartwreching..both of them knowing he had passed if his ring was now with Paul. :(

Dr. Yueh wasn't naive. He had no illusions of walking out alive. He tricked the Baron into putting Wanna out her misery and he wanted to join her. I also love that we are a little over 10k years since the jihad against AI. The universe of dune is so advanced and yet so medieval, both in fighting style, superstition, and power structures. It makes complete sense, though, when you understand the history. A bloody 100-year crusade against AI and thinking machines would force all forms of technology and advancement into a very limited sphere. The only way to advance our technological capacity as a civilization would to have it exist within the minds of humans. Hence, the spice and the navigators, how the doctors work and the mentats (which we saw brief examples of) but essentially human computers and the bene gesserit. It's a brilliant concept.

the "voice" is talking in a way, that your nervous system, your bodys control center, does what u tell them to do, without them knowing after, basically a memory loss of what u told them to do, and what they did... that's how that 6 or 8 legged "pet" the Harkonnens had, "knew what she said" even tho "it didnt understand her"... there's many similarities to Star Wars, like Arrakis is probably inspiration for Tattooine. "Spice" is important in both universes (Han Solo was a spice smuggler), but the Star Wars movies never tells us exactly what it is or why it's important. The Bene Gesserit and their "weirding way" (i.e., their highly advanced martial arts) are probably inspiration for the Jedi, the Voice is probably inspiration for the Jedi mind trick, Paul is an inspiration for Luke, both stories have a "Chosen One", the Sandworm (name Shai-Hulud) is probably inspiration for the sarlacc pit, that Jabba the Hutt throws people in to, etc... so yes, 99.999% of people, thinks George Lucas read Dune, and made his "own version" of it, and called it Star Wars...

Even though it’s great on home video, it pales in comparison to seeing it on an IMAX screen. The sound design shines in that environment. (Instead of "regular people" DOING it for themselves) Frank Herbert is even credited with saying that ALL Charismatic Leaders should have; "WARNING: May be hazardous to YOUR health" tattooed on their foreheads! The magic of Star Wars (1977) is that George Lucas stitched together the previous 40 years of pop Eastern (Kurasawa) and Western Science Fiction and Fantasy themes into a fun package wrapped in WOW special effects.

I am like you in that I have consumed the material in all facets. I also agree that the pure storytelling of Dune was probably best served by the miniseries on the Sci-Fi channel, obviously the budget/production values are vastly inferior to this version.

This is one of those movies where it's both good and bad going into it blindly. Good - you get to experience it in all it's visual and world-building glory. Bad - there is a lot of subtext and double-meaning in what is spoken, and without historical context of the storyline, some designs, events, and characters may seem odd. Still... neither scenario takes away from how excellent the movie is overall.

They captured the scale of of the empire and of the size of the houses. Spice enhances the brains function, iie pilots can see into the future when traveling through space avoiding objects in their path. For others it turns their brains into analytica. super computers, and the Beni-geseret contro, over their bodies,and also (mind control) ? Ie: analytical. House arteries was becoming too powerfull, and popular. Which is why he betrayed him. I read the book 40+ years ago, they did do a good adaption, though it leaves out important back story? information that would help understand the overall picture. Part 2 is just as good, though they changed some parts. It is possible they might make 3rd movie??

I'm with you girl I work midnights and sometimes if I catch an earlier movie I will be so tired I won't remember much of it. And I'll be like oh wait this happened the next time I see it. I am a huge fan of the book And I can give you some notes on what is going on. It's even further in the future than 10,000 years. The artificial intelligences tried to take over and were put down about 10,000 years from now. This is 10,000 years since then This is closer to 22,000 years in the future. There's nothing supernatural about the Voice, the Bene Gesserit have developed techniques to pitch their voice in a certain way that causes human beings to obey them without thinking. This is simply a deep understanding of an individual's motivations and mindset. Much like if your mother told you to do something even if you're an adult, you would probably want to do it without hesitation. 13:30 Bene Gesserit have tremendous control over their bodies a fully trained😮 member of the order could have blocked out all the pain of the gom jabbar without any problems. They can cause their body to neutralize almost any poison, they can read people so well that they know what you're thinking just by looking at you, The best of them can tell if you're lying. Paul naturally has this ability. This is not psychic This is just observational skill and training at work.

The Voice is not mystical. It operates on the principal that certain frequencies render a listener more suggestible than others. Bene Gesserit can control their bodies to such an extent that they can exercise the control necessary to use these frequencies in speech. Bene Gesserit can absolutely control the sex of their children. There is very little real mysticism in Dune. It’s mostly very powerful Intelligence and discipline.

I feel like they shoehorned in a lot of Zendaya to satisfy her fans (Paul dreams of her maybe twice before they meet and the book has a different narrator 😅). Other than that it's pretty close to the book so far. Definitely watch David Lynch's Dune to see what Denis borrowed, and then the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune to see what David pulled from the first failed production. It's very interesting to see how ideas trickled down. The SciFi miniseries Frank Herbert's Dune is also very good (terrible 2000s CGI aside), and has a sequel Children of Dune with a young shirtless James McAvoy 😉

Why did you cut out Shadout Mapes' holy ecstasy? The Baron was cursed by The Voice to suffer gluttony for attempting to strike a Bene Gesserrit witch. Duke Leto was too pure to survive in such a treacherous Imperium, but he was a veteran of war against several devious houses including the Harkonnen which is where he acquired the loyalty of then slave soldier Gurney.

My favourite movies of Denis Villeneuve's are Dune: Part 2 and Blade Runner 2049. A great storyteller both visually and dialogue-wise. I wonder if I might offer some feedback, not Dune related specifically, but more Reaction related. I wonder if you might consider turning the subtitles off? Your viewers can turn their subtitles on if they need to on RU-vid. Watching a Reactor reading subtitles and then reacting to what they’ve sped-read before the actors have completed their speech is off-putting and arguably a disservice to the performances you’re reacting to. I don’t know if you have a specific need for subtitles, but the subtitles that translate non-English speech are hard burned in, and appear whether you have subtitles on or off so you needn’t fear you won’t understand what is being said. I love watching reaction videos and I’m very aware that reacting to such cornerstone stories, such as Dune, will come with a heightened emotional toll for the viewers. The current trend for subtitles is off-putting for those watching who want to watch a reactor react rather than read out of sequence to the story. This may be such a small thing for many but it may be a significant distraction that breaks their opinion on the reaction video. I sincerely offer this feedback in the hopes that it might be useful and with positive intention.

I didn't catch it at first watching this movie but Paul wasn't reluctant to kill Jamis because he had never killed before (at least not entirely). It's because he saw that Jamis was supposed to mentor him. Now, that entire timeline cannot exist.
@tealscott10
@tealscott10 6 месяцев назад
It is the timeline that can't exist. His prescience is foulable as we saw with the way he 'died' in his vision during the fight. Most important though was the confession in the sand tent. What he has seen of that holy war, how he causes it, how awful it is. Bit by bit those other timelines are pruned off. Paul sees there is a very, very, small chance he can steer things into a less-bad-way, but that grows smaller and smaller.
@edwinsuijkerbuijk5106
@edwinsuijkerbuijk5106 6 месяцев назад
In the books Stilgars remark asking asking if Paul is toying with him also has to do with how Paul is fighting. Paul often moves in fast then slows down at he last moment instead of going for the kill. This is because Paul has been trained to fight opponents using shields, something the Fremen have a hard time dealing with.
@TehIdiotOne
@TehIdiotOne 5 месяцев назад
@@edwinsuijkerbuijk5106 That's a good point. I also only realised the reason the Fremen don't fight with shields is because it attracts the sandworms(which they mentioned in passing early in the movie)

"what if he's not the Messiah?" That's just it - he's not a messiah, he's a very naughty boy! The prophecy of Lisan al-Gaib was planted centuries ago by the Bene Geserit Missionaria Protectiva. The BG literally send missionaries to backwater planets, planting legends, and superstitions, so that in the future, if a BG found herself in trouble, she could exploit her knowledge of those legends (which she learned from the BG) to assume a position in it, and gain the support of the natives. That's all there is to it.
