As May 31st, 1862, dawns over the wet and muddy outskirts of Richmond, General Joseph E. Johnston's bold attack plan against McClellan's divided army along the Chickahominy and Pamunkey rivers begins! However, mishaps and miscommunications almost immediately begin to unravel Johnston's carefully-laid plans. Now, the Confederates find themselves clumsily bungling their way through an attack on Erasmus D. Keyes' IV Corps position at the crossroads at Seven Pines, while the Union troops of Edwin V. "Bull" Sumner's II Corps prepare to counterattack at the railroad junction of Fair Oaks Station. In the largest and bloodiest battle yet fought in the war's Eastern Theater, who will prevail in this chaotic and confusing clash?

So this is basically the battle that sets up the entire second half of the war: it leads to Lee being put in charge of the main Confederate Army and subsequently becoming a hero for defending the Captal, and on the other side it leads to McClellan dithering further and being subsequently fired after sad dithering allows Lee to launch his offensive.

As someone who lives in the area, I can confirm that it is, indeed, a mud bog every single time it rains around here. The area is relatively flat with only a few outlets for the water to drain. As a result, you either have it pool up into large puddles that take a few days to completely drain or it runs off rapidly into torrents, turning what would normally be dry ground look like a River.

Thanks for these two video's on the Battle of Seven Pines. I grew up about a mile from the Grapevine Bridge (on the Hanover side of the river) so naturally I have a real interest in the events of those days. My sincere condolences for your loss. It's so hard to think that, in that horrible War, at least at some points during the War, Brother fought against Brother, Son fought against Father...and my question is:How does one get away from the tragic memories of situations like that? I remember visiting the Antietam Battlefield...and in the midst of my visit, a Thunderstorm hit. But there was something else. As it started to rain, I was overwhelmed by this terrible sadness that nearly made me cry....and why not? Thinking about that terrible War, and as to how death, sometimes between even close friends and family members, were the results of fate, that saw them on opposite sides of that War, and having to kill, or be killed, even by someone that they loved, tears at me to this day, when I think about it. May that kind of Warfare never happen here in the United States of America, ever again! I live in Virginia, in Staunton, and I have to admit:If I would've fought in the Civil War, I would've fought for the South. Even though our side lost the Civil War, it took the Union nigh on 4 years to totally defeat our Brave Men, and look at the what-for that our Men gave those Union Forces! No disrespect meant toward the Union, but they should've just left us alone!

@@mikhailiagacesa3406 McClellan quite simply cannot be counted as a good Commander. No way! He knew how to fight, but he let his own fears get the best of him. He moved way too slowly, and the Confederates knew it, and quite apparently knew where and when to strike.

The Civil War would've quite possibly been over by the end of 1862, if not sooner. After Shiloh, people wanted President Lincoln to get rid of General Grant. Lincoln responded:"I can't spare this Man. He fights"!

Hopefully McClellan will spend those 3 weeks improving his rear infrastructure at least! The inability to rapidly reinforce any of his corps commanders should have been first on his mind when adopting a defensive posture. Being destroyed in detail is no fun, and a battle like this would reveal that weakness.
@ronaldshank7589
@ronaldshank7589 2 года назад
@@WarhawkYT Gen. McClellan was one of the WORST Generals in the entire Union Army. Period! The only one that was worse than Gen. McClellan, was Gen. Burnside. He unnecessarily wasted countless thousands of Union Forces, in one failed assault after another, against a very well-fortified Confederate position, at the Battle of Fredericksburg, in December of 1862. The Confederates were well-positioned behind a huge, and very strong and solid, stone wall. It was a Turkey Shoot. The Union Forces were, in a large part, mowed down by the Confederate Forces hidden behind that stone wall. Add to that an excellent display of Artillery Fire, which was orchestrated by a Confederate Officer, by the last name of Pelham. The Confederate Forces, working in tandem with each other, made relatively short work of the Union Forces. Fredericksburg is a Confederate Victory. It wasn't even close! There was no way that the Confederates were going to lose that Battle!!!

This makes me wish people still played the mount and blade mod north and south. I've always loved learning about the American civil war. I remember a documentary series called civil war journal I liked but i felt it glossed over a lot so finding these more in depth videos is really awesome. It's nice because so many history channels exist but they mostly do ancient or middle age stuff or ww2 which I also love learning about but it's nice to see some about this time period especially USA civil war.

In my relentless quest to perfect my dislike of Gen John Brinton McClellan, his ad-homonym attack upon Casey's Troops has been a particular gem. Mac leaked his condemnation to the newspapers before learning the facts; but that was a usual fault of the Great Man. I'm currently reading the reports from this battle, and your presentations are like having a Professor standing right in front of me to clarify. Love, David

Joe Johnston should never have been in charge of an Army much less a Corp or Army.
@hvymettle

Johnston did a poor job communicating his battle plan to his subordinates. The plan, such as it was, was not horrible, but poorly executed at a bloody cost with little gain. However one may feel about Longstreet, he clearly screwed the pooch at Seven Pines and blamed it on Huger with Johnston covering Longstreet's ass in his official report.

Not telling ur underlings ur plans is a major failure of most army officers I was not an officer but I was an division S3 clerk so i was in on the planning in that I typed up all the orders I had to keep tel the Col writing these orders that unless he told this guy what the other guy is doing they will fuck it up. Yes a Little Sp4E4 of but 20 yr saw this happen before and could figure out why when a again when a man of 42 with 24 yrs in could not. Why b/c he had been taught to only tell an underling what they need to know to do what they were to do. But I knew Murphy's law and applied it while he just went by what he had been taught 21 yr ago by men whohad been taught the same same for countless generation. After about sic months he got better and by the time i left the 8th to go to the 101st he was even better but I dont know if what he had learn stuck With the 101st I was at company level and in an Airborne Div at last (yes I jump out of perfectly good airplanes). Here at least within the 101st Aviation Group (like unto an Infantry Belgrade) all companies were informed daily of what birds would be i air and where. And then during a day this might change at any time and all company OP Officers would be inform by radio of said changes. At time I was the highest raking person in the OP office and orders would have to be forwarded to piolets in the air. Cap Williams one day got such an order. I was working the radios as that was one of my 2 other jobs than S3 clerk as we were under maned with regard to EM. He was doing other things and just told me to go ahead and rely the order. I did. These orders happened to be for the XO's bird. He began jump all over me about my giving him an order As the XO was a Cap too but Jr to Cap Williams as to day of rank and in this case change of command and Cap Williams was not in a very good mod just then seein as how he had to re-plan everyone to get done what had to be done he was not happy with the XO chewing his clerks ass for doing as I was order by him to do. Cap Williams walked over and calmly asked "Specialist Bays may I please have the mic." He never gave an order when he could politely ask someone to do something. He clicked the mike three times. This was to tell all piolets to stop saying anything they might be saying and listen to him on the secure radio channel He gave them a few seconds to finish saying anything they might have to say to someone else that had importance before he click the mic once more and then began talking. "Gentlemen" he began and i will never forget his words "u all know my voice U all know the who the voice belongs to that was giving odors on this channel a few moments ago. I dont care who u are but when a voice comes over this secure channel that u knew giving u orders u will obey them as though i was the one talking." he said this in a calm collected voice slowly so that no one could say they could not under stand him. He then finished by saying quite loudly in the tone an officer uses when he want u to know u had better understand "Everyone got that. Any question come see me when u land" To my knowledge no one had any questions as this was not just heard by the piolets in the air but the whole company as he had put it on the company loud speakers. The channel he had used went to everyone in eery bird we had in the air at that time. After he had finished and handed the mic back to me he told me "Specialist from here on in and I want u to pass this on to (I wish I could remember their names but they are gone but he used the names of the radio ops) what I just told those assholes that think they are officers. And further more if orders come down and I or Sgt (name gone Ops Sgt) am not here u are in command and u have all the authority of this section to pass those orders on." He then want on to tell me the reg he was able to do this under. he also told me that the 2 radio ops had the same authority. I know this story went on and on but it is just showing how dumb some offieders can be b/c they are trained to be
