Ada Palmer is a Renaissance historian at the University of Chicago who studies radical free thought and censorship, composes music, consults on anime and manga, and is the author of the acclaimed Terra Ignota sci-fi series, among many other things.
Tyler sat down with Ada to discuss why living in the Renaissance was worse than living during the Middle Ages, how art protected Florence, why she’s reluctant to travel back in time, which method of doing history is currently the most underrated, whose biography she’ll write, how we know what old Norse music was like, why women scholars helped us understand Viking metaphysics, why Diderot's Jacques the Fatalist is an interesting work, what people misunderstand about the inquisition(s), why science fiction doesn’t have higher social and literary status, which hive she would belong to in Terra Ignota, what the new novel she’s writing is about, and more.
Recorded June 28th, 2023.

I'm actually kind of dumb struck by the bit at the end where she says men should wongen coded collaboration methods. We have been doing that for about the last 30 years in schools. Is arguably one of the reasons why boys have been underperforming compared to their girl counterparts. Uncle this whole female leaders are more peaceful thing was a meme on the internet a few years ago. When you look at your being history it actually turns out that female leaders per capita started more wars than male leaders. Another gatica had which I was going to be quiet about until I heard her make the sexist accusation that women or somehow more peaceful and cooperative what's her assertion that gender is 90% culture. He actually brings up the way women walk, and won't yes it's true that culture dictates that women exaggerating their hip movement is desirable. It is also true that woman's hips move back and forth more than men's heads because they're pelvis literally has a different angle. The differences in help men and women walk is biological befoy it is cultural. He also brings up a bit about menstruation, he seems to not realize that menstruation is one of the possible reasons for white women historically wore skirts. Simulat to how babies of both genders wore gowns untill the invention of the midden diaper. This was a very informative interview however I get the feeling that this woman self censored herself a bit.

Interesting. I am often struck by Ada Palmer's intelligence while simultaneously how naive she is in her liberalism. Democracy is a sham. There is only borgoise rule and class war.
