I worked as an institutional painter a few years ago. All I can tell you is we initially painted psychiatric hospital walls pink (based on some study) (we were told)... And about two years later we repainted the whole place a light green (based on another study) (or so we were told). Sorry I cannot site specific studies.

My (completely unscientific) hypothesis is that pink is the color that we, as fetus' "see" through our shut eyes, in the womb. Shut your eyes & look towards a light & notice what color you "see". Much like certain types of "white noise" can tend to calm one's agitation; I think it's by mimicking the sound fetus' hear in the womb, of the mother's heartbeat/blood-flow.

What did you expect? For him to read his book aloud on camera? He gave an introduction to his work, gave a short synopsis of what he's written about, and if you're interested in learning more, you can go read his book. If you don't care about what he's done, you can ignore it and move on with your life. But why should he give all of the things he's put hard work into writing to you for free? He's not going to make a mint off people anyway, but we should support his work if we like it.

Honestly, I think the choice of warm primary colours in that particular case are just an attempt to make the location stand apart from its surroundings. Think about it. You probably can't name which houses are painted grey and which are brown on the average suburban street, but you definitely know where the bright pink and purple house is.

The "drunk tank" is a special jail cell where drunks pulled in for antisocial behaviour, usually violent, are housed until they sober up enough to be either put into the general population for further processing or released. It isn't just any cell and, since it's a holding area (hence the 'tank') intended for multiple occupancy, it tends to be much larger than a normal cell. There are also the pink coveralls worn by those sentenced to do public service which highlight their status publicly.

One way this can be tested is to apply this in some other country where the color pink has different connotations and isn't associated with femininity. If the effects are the same, it would indicate that we're intrinsically or biologically programmed to respond to the color a certain way. If the effects are different, then we'll know that it's because of the cultural associations with pink.

Almost certainly. At the beginning of the century pink was considered a masculine color in the USA and England, because of it's association with Red. Blue was the feminine color at that time.

I was hoping you would link me to a video like that, I found it to be very interesting. Although, I could argue that while there is no light that is pink, the color pink still exists in the form of a qualia that our brain uses to identify a particular combination of wavelengths, so it is a real color in terms of qualia, but not real if talking about specific wavelengths.

I found out in FLorida, US it is not legal to paint a sales show room pink as it makes people more susceptible to high pressure sales tactics. I think they should paint the squad rooms of police pink they are becoming more and more aggressive over the past decades.

I heard they use those colours because they're quite alarming. Being a fast food restaurant they don't want people to be there for long so they use reds and yellows. However, I don't know how much of that is true.

What's so wonderful about pink is that it's a color that doesn't actually exist. It's just the brain's attempt mixing red and violet.

These people do not come and talk for Big Think for no reason. They come to put themselves out there and raise awareness for their own agenda. They become more popular and their research becomes more important. Some of them plug their own books because they are here for the generation of interest. There is nothing wrong with it. This is how the world works.

Yes, I mean clearly we have pink colors. It was really just to have people think a bit more than they normally would. Also, side note: maybe that is why the color is calming? Because it is a mix of both the extreme ends of the color spectrum and our brains just can't handle the idea of those things existing at the same time?

I'm not sure who flagged his message as spam, but it was not me. The RU-vid spam system is messed up if one person can silence the shared opinions of hundreds of people. In fact, I did agree with Steve. I simply went into the reasoning behind the message more and expressed that this is a common way to garner support in the world. Without this system, we would accomplish much less as a race.

Here in the U.S. pink used to be considered the boys color and blue was for girls. I think that changed sometime in the 40's or 50's. So, I wouldn't be surprised that if gender associations of color could be different over time than they probably could in other places too...or not.
@LordMarcus

I think it's because when you're in a pink room, it's because you can't stop thinking about being in a pink room and how absurd it, your situation, and everything is.
@HaploidCell
@HaploidCell 11 лет назад
Maybe the hardened criminals were shamed to be stuck in a pink cell, and everyone who was was mocked by their peers. So, that would also be a reason why violence went down. However, I do admit that colours can have an effect on moods. Being surrounded by dark colors can make people feel depressed, for example. I just find it hard to belief that grown-ups with scrupulous violence on their record who weren't detered by jail changed over 9 months due to a nice colour.
@aj19bcx
@aj19bcx 11 лет назад
pink used to be an aggressive color, since red is aggressive and pink is just a lighter tint of red it used to be seen as masculine, powder blue like Jeff Dunham's Prius was the feminine color.
@dragonlady2264
@dragonlady2264 11 лет назад
that is a fascinating thought; I would not be surprised if science found this to be true... just as I believe a lot of violence is "learned" in the womb as well, if the mother had a traumatic pregnancy or was abused or emotionally "unstable" while pregnant...

Holy shit I just had an epiphany! Why don't we get rid of all the jumpsuits in the US prisons and replace them with pick ones? I mean there is nothing unethical about that and it would be the biggest experiment in history with that much data, results would be pretty dam good. Control= now, experimental= pink jails. Also a bunch of pink criminals would be hilarious.
@oeckstei

Further research and experiments w/ the psychology and sociology of urban design does seem like a politically radical yet worthy approach to try and mitigate certain deviant behaviors sounds for schools and prisons. Some hospitals today for example look like luxury hotels and I'll bet that helps to reduce a lot of anxieties people have.

He doesn't mention in here that after a few hours in the jail cells people would start having near psychotic behaviour and that is why it isn't used anymore.
@slackerlifeman

You can paint the walls whatever color you want. The recidivism rate of pink prisons will be the same as grey. A private prison system is such a terrible idea, but my fellow Americans would be hard pressed to justify the cost. Perhaps one day a Senator's child will go to prison, and he'll see that his child received no rehabilitation whatsoever. Then maybe something will get done.

Not necessarily. Let's say pink in Foreign Culture A is associated not at all with femininity but some other connotation like mourning that inhibits or dampens aggressive behavior just like the color would here. The sameness of effects might not distinguish between natural and cultural factors (a bit of a false dichotomy anyway). Even if pink in Foreign Culture A had no inhibitory connotations and still inhibited aggression in subjects, the effects might still remain unexplained.

Further research and experiments w/ the psychology and sociology of urban design does seem like a politically radical yet worthy approach to try and mitigate certain deviant behaviors sounds for schools and prisons. Some hospitals today for example look like luxury hotels and from experience that certainly helps to reduce a lot of anxiety associated w/ the normal visual imagery of what is normally an unpleasant place to be.

Did you know that pink is not a color? At least not a visible color of light. Refracted light on a prism would only show pink (magenta, fucsia) on the ultra violet range and invisible to the naked eye, making it very uncommon on nature. Also is opposite to green, the most common of colors and the one our eyes detects the most shades of. Maybe theres an answer inside all that.

of course punishment has a bigger effect but who said that they didn't punish them the same way before they painted the walls pink? i think it sounds weird when he says "the color interacts with brain", but the colors can and do influence peoples moods, not like a punishment does, but the influence exists... many companies, political parties, hospitals etc. use it... its hard to measure mood, but if you have many subjects, you can do that
