I never graduated college.
I never even went to college.
I went to the University of Digging Ditches on Construction Sites - go Fighting Shovels!
So, why should you listen to me?
Hmmm, let’s see… Well, I run a business that I built myself. So, let me give you a couple of tips.
I hire and fire people like you all the time. And I’ve seen a pattern with your generation-something I call “The Language of Losers.” Let me give you some examples:
“I did my best.” My assistant told me this once after screwing up royally. And I said, “Matt, if you did your best and you screwed up royally, then I need to fire you right now. The answer is either, ‘I didn’t do my best, I’ll do better next time’ or, ‘I’m drunk right now and need to sit down.’ So the phrase I’ve drilled into my employees is, ‘Don’t do your best; do my best.’”
Another example: I had a young employee once say to me, “I’m sorry. I screwed up. Next time, I’ll triple check.” And I said, “Did you single check? Did you double check? How did you get to triple check?” I know how he got to triple check. Single check is a screw up. Double check is…ehhhh…a flub. And triple check is, “Hey, what do you want from me?” So, he hopped right to triple-check after not single- or double-checking.
And the worst one-the one that’s driving me nuts, the one that’s destroying our society, the one that got hold of the piece of thread of the sweater of society and is just unraveling it: “I feel.” “I feel threatened.” “I feel I’m being treated unfairly.” “I feel you’re a bully.” You’re 23. You live at home. Your bed is shaped like a race car and it’s covered with stuffies and your huggie-bookie. Nobody cares how you feel.
So, no excuses. Please. If you do the job you’re hired to do and you do it well, your employer will never stop thanking you and lavishing you with ponies, and frankincense, and myrrh.
Now, you do your job well and you’re not rewarded? Someone else will find you and reward you. Believe me, that’s how the universe works.
But, let’s face it-the chances of any of you working for me are slim to none. The chances some of you may go out there and set some policy are pretty good. And most of you are going to vote on that policy. So, let me ask you a favor: please, stay away from my freedom.

I worked at a popular retailer that sold everything from a rat trap to Automotive service. After a short time a fellow employee who had been there we'll say long term . Came to me said I talked to the customers too long . I said really ? I'm still putting stock on shelves as I'm talking to them and I'm talking to them about their problem their issues , their concerns . I ignored that employee. Later one manager in my section says the same thing then another. I told them both , you know the difference between My customers and yours ? Immediately they said there is no difference we're all selling the same products . I said My customers come back , they are in here once a week or every two weeks once a month but they come back !! The people you guys serve I never see again. I said My customers are paying your paycheck ! I said those same customers are paying My paycheck too !! So if they wanted me to stop talking to them I would . But I left instead . I went to another location for awhile bad management again I left. Tried 18 wheeler parts for awhile my customers loved me. I still see them from time to time. On the street we chat. After a few short work experiences I found myself back at the first store having been asked back by one of the two managers who had said I talked to the customers too long. 15 years and a huge following of customers, I left again. Management changes life changes. I've been gone 3 years. I found myself in that store about a week ago .. One of my old customers spotted me asked about a special his son told him about. I said lets look into that at customer service. I said if it's not in two regular spots he likely missed a one day special. We hit customer service , I asked the girl if she had the previous weeks flyer ? She did and indeed it had been a one day deal . I then asked her to check other stores for the product # as they will usually keep the low price to clear out the rest of the non stock # . No luck but the customer was still smiling and asked how I'd been ? I said well I haven't worked here for 3 years . He said he always looked for me when he came in. I said I know that's why I took care of you today. I still appreciate that he had been there for me in the past as a customer. It's a good feeling to just be helpful instead of saying that's not my job ..... The worst thing I hear all the time. Keep the videos coming they're helping !

And it is not my boss's fault for that. I should clarify that I do not disagree with your logic. I am a firm believer of mistakes being the best teacher. However, you cannot expect others to be tolerant of your mistakes; you should learn BEFORE you accept a high quality job or make it CLEAR that you may mess up as you are a newbie. Hence why they have internships in college. Simply using your emotional state is not an acceptable reason for a boss to forgive you.

This was a very loaded video. Firstly, society makes out that University gives you good jobs. It doesn't! People like him that have set up their own businesses know exactly how business works and there should be more videos from people like him. Secondly, he talks about the excuses culture. We are in a results orientated world. It's not about effort - one has to work smart to get results. Finally, like he mentioned about the beach, we have so many restrictions now, I think we need to let loose a little bit. Great video - thank you :)

The beach analogy is a little rough. Whether beach or city living, the more people there are in an area, the more rules that will come about. I don't want to go to a beach where everyone has a dog running freely. Nor do I want someone to break out their boom box and blast annoying music. And do we really want everyone building a bonfire on the beach and in most cases, leaving the mess for someone else to clean up? As such, you can't have 15 million people crammed into a place like New York City and not have a lot of rules to keep them from infringing on others. There is no great answer here. The more crowded a place gets, the more rules that will follow.

You don't have to stay with a shit job, just do it well while you're there anyway. That kind of work ethic goes a long way and will, more likely, lead to success. @TRUMPLocalWallBuildersUnion 6 лет назад
WideMouthWideMouthia take a peek back in history .. Government ran by military never ever works in favor of the people it governs. To have success in a military career its an absolute must to blindly follow orders that are disseminated from either a known or unknown source above your authority even if it contradicts your god given morality. Do you want to be ruled and governed by force ? Because that is the mechanism used by military dictatorships throughout history.
@KamisamanoOtaku
@KamisamanoOtaku 6 лет назад
With all due respect to the military, it doesn't guarantee you become a good statesman and it isn't the only path to becoming such, WideMouthWideMouthia. The trick is finding a way to set requirements that can easily be met by all, but maybe with an incentive towards rewarding merit. For example, so that the government can't get tyrannical by creating more and more boundaries to being a full, legal adult and citizen, we still need an absolute age where anyone not legally incompetent qualifies. Instead of 18, though, how about 36? You make it to age 36, don't commit any crime that (under the current system) would have cost you some of your rights, and even if you can't hold down a job, haven't served in the military, etc. you still have all the legal rights (and responsibilities) of being an adult. At 18 you'd still no longer be _minor,_ but you won't magically be assumed as capable and responsible. *The way to fast-track this is to demonstrate you're already a mature, functional adult.* How do you do that? While still avoiding any legal offenses that would - under the current system - cost you some of your rights, simply pay your taxes as well. You need to actually pay into the system, but we aren't even going to require you have steady work or anything. Seven consecutive years of this *or* 10 non-consecutive, and you already qualify as a full-adult. Military service makes it even faster. Basic training should already have a soldier able to at least "fake" being a functional adult, so once that is done, you are to be treated as an adult *while serving*. No, this isn't a trap to get people into the military for years and years; just complete two years of service and get an honorable discharge, and now you're a full, legal adult at age 20. I'd like *other* fast-track options as well because the goal is *not* to prevent people from becoming real adult citizens, but to encourage them to actually do so! Instead of the "participation" model so many of us - yeah, I'm among the underachievers - already own. >.>

Good message. It's been getting worse every year around my home in Colorado. Regulations on top of regulations. At the dog park, my dog and I have to stay on the trail, no off leash running allowed. Are they kidding? At the horse ranch nearby, riders have to stay on the trail, no running in the field allowed. It's like we're all at the public pool, "no running". I travel to Nebraska to do some hunting every season, and it's like going back in time. No rules, just be careful out there. It's glorious. Too many people making too many rules. God I miss freedom.

Putting signs on the beach. You basically explained the brazilian taxes and regulations. Here there are strange things like a state forbidding putting salt on the tables (it'd bad for your health), a 30k people city forbidding markets less than 2 km one from another (too many marts) and the whole country forbidding toy commercials (the kids will ask their parents for toys they can't afford. Really, that was in the text of the law).

When something goes wrong, don't demand more rules/policies. We have a zillion rules and policies and if you haven't noticed the country hasn't been getting better. It's actually been getting worse. When you can try more things, you (and others) will experience life more. There's a good reason why most of those "people are awesome" videos are only from people in Asia. Because people are allowed to be more awesome there with overall less rule. (Even though some of them are very draconian.) That's how bad the US has become. He's saying don't blame others for bad stuff, and push to get new laws made. Either do something about it yourself, or shut up and don't add to the problem. I'm going to repeat this on the main thread.
@Sylvertaco
@Sylvertaco 6 лет назад
Sirellyn Y - You know that making the overall claim of 'no new rules should be made' is vague too right? At what point in history were there 'enough rules'? After women had the right to vote? After slavery was outlawed? Before the Constitution? If your claim was actually followed since the dawn of civilization, then you are either supporting anarchy or possibly a theocracy. So what do you mean by 'do it yourself'? Do you mean rally support for opposition towards the source of the wrong? Without laws or representatives who support your goals, you are only relying on mob mentality.

You can't really blame young people for starting their sentences with "I feel ...". They've been taught to be assertive, rather than aggressive. The difference, the theory says, is that aggression targets the other one (as in an accusing "YOU are doing this"), whereas assertiveness takes your own position as a starting point. In other words, they've been taught to look at every possible conflict from their own POV, and phrase it like that. The objective of sharing your POV is for your opponent to become sympathetic, instead of defensive ... or highly irritated, as in your case.

2:16-2:20 Nope that's not how the universe works. First off whether you did your job depends on who is judging you. And therefore rewards depend on that person. If it is you yourself doing the judging then to get a reward you have to convince the one that has the capability to reward you that you do deserve a reward from that person/organisation to actually get it. But of course Prager U won't mention that cuz that would prove all of their alt-right preachings as invalid.

Do you even know what the alt right is? Lol. PragerU is pretty traditionally conservative and boarders on the classical liberal side of things. Nothing alt-right about it lol. Nice try at deferring responsibility though. If you feel an employer is unjust with his/her “judgment” just continue doing your job and getting better until you feel comfortable leaving for a better job, or better yet, starting your own business. Adam already covered that in the video. If you’re good at what you do, there will always be someone looking for you even if your current employer sucks. If you’re unwilling to continually improve then no one can help you. I’d advise knocking out some certification where you can always get a job like Fire Fighting, RN, Cop, Dental Hygeine, PTA, etc etc... Or get a cushy union job with someone like USPS or UPS etc... Then you can earn a decent wage and, unless you’re a total screw up, just put in your time. I suspect there will be a plethora of excuses as to why those options won’t work though lol.

For me, the mere fact that you're unappreciated and judged unfairly in your company is a very good challenge for you to acquire more professional and personal skills. I am working as a Senior High School Science teacher from a company (school) where Science is given the least priority, plus I am frequently overworking to train some students for out-of-school competition. Yet, this is not paid- in cash nor in kind. Neither did they thank me. I want to take a Master's degree, but I can't. Why? Because, they overloaded me with seven subjects to be taught, two of which have 2 sections (my schedule from Monday to Friday is 7:30 am- 4:30 pm). That would also mean I need to make seven lesson plans every week. I've also been reprimanded by my head for not doing the things that are not really my responsibility and not included in my job description. Still, I feel rewarded from these challenges. I learned and still learning how to manage my time and manage my stress. Those ,for me, are already rewarding. In short, both stress and reward still depends on the employee. For as long as the employer does not do a life-threatening or inevitably life-wrecking actions, everything would just be a challenge for you to grow and develop-- the greatest reward that you will get.

You 3, robin thoelen, Michael Clay, and Angelo Recomo, are all missing the point. (And making a lot of unproven assumptions about S C for the sake of shoveling propaganda down their throats disguised as life advice, just like Daddy Peterson taught you.) (Also, Prager U isn't exactly alt right, its true, but they tacitly support them and ally themselves with the alt right --- after all, so long as Neoliberalism, the actual thing Prager U is, holds power in any country, the children of neoliberals will grow up to be fascist.) No, robin thoelen, there is decidely not *nothing else to it:" psychologists have demonstrated that psychopaths are overrepresented in positions of power, and no psychopath can be trusted to judge who is or is not doing their job. Michael Clay, the classical liberals talked about replacing aristocracy with a new aristocracy formed from economic power, and Prager U does not do that because they are *neo*liberal, not *classical* liberal, because hardly anyone ever thinks about the Monarchy anymore, (despite the fact that Canada and Australia are, last I heard, ruled by the Queen of England for some insane reason?) But more importantly, Michael Clay, S C has not in any way implied they are "unwilling to improve." This is just deflection on your part, trying to turn someone's criticism around so you don't have to face their own. Its a kind of rationalization to hide yourself from your own cognitive dissonance, your own intuitive knowledge that our society's meritocratic veneer is just that, and neoliberals aren't, despite their name, for liberty. Its part of a greater, Boomer mythology of a kind of economic original sin: lo! The CEO cometh a savior, surrounded by that holiest of hosts, the Shareholders, to redeem the base and mortal Proletariat from their sloth! What a joke. Angelo Recomo, the Romans said of the Germanic tribes, (though tbf, this was likely slander,) that they "let brigands and thieves run loose" to "teach their people strength." For the Romans, this was a horrifying idea. And if it were shown to me to be decisively true, I'd have to say I'd have hated the leadership of the Germanic tribes, as well. Your attitude seems to be that we should let the modern day brigand of the corporate executive exploit others to feed his own sloth in order to teach the common people strength. Funny, you mention that you want to get a master's degree, but can't... seems to me that if not for your school abusing you by forcing you into tasks you explicitly did not agree with not as exceptions, like, say, during a crisis, but as a routine, without any compensation or *thanks,* (like seriously? Shouldn't that tip you off to the fact that they are doing this on purpose to subjugate you?) you'd *still* be getting your challenge, *still* be growing personally and professionally, and heck, since you seem to be a workaholic, *still* be getting your high on stress fed, (and hey, I understand how that is --- I feel weird if nothing is stressing me out, and there's proven biochemical mechanisms behind all that,) *and* you'd be ultimately getting compensated more and possibly doing something *even more important.* Your job should hire more people to take care of those tasks instead of being stingy, and you should stop pretending that you're somehow pro-work ethic when you're enabling the sloth of those above you. I mean really, how much would it actually cost them just to hire you an assistant so you could pursue that American Dream of yours? But honestly, I don't know what's going on on your side.... just as you don't know what's going on with S C. Don't try to mask your propaganda behind life advice if you don't even know the basic details of the other person's life. I find there is a great hypocrisy in this Neoliberal lip service to liberty and "not putting signs on beaches" that is done right alongside blatant apologetics, even *advocacy* for, corporate bureaucracy. Bureaucracy, government or corporate, is still exploitative, and antithetical to the ideal of liberty. Stop play acting at being Anarchists if you aren't going to commit. If you're for Democracy, why not be for *workplace* Democracy? Or workplace representational republic or whatever.
@peppermintgal4302
@peppermintgal4302 5 лет назад
And let me reiterate that point about life advice: none of you are actually giving relevant life advice to S C, because again, you are *assuming* things about their material conditions, because you've been fed this bullcrap that anyone who dare have any philosophical objection to Neoliberalism must be *weak.* Instead, you've been taught Machiavellian recruitment tactics that you don't even recognize for what they are, just like a cult member might be taught to do. Oh, and if any of you have any doubt that Prager U is *closely allied* with the Alt Right, even if they aren't *within* it, Black Pigeon Speaks is now, for the first time maybe ever, in my recommendations, from just ONE Prager U video. For reference, Black Pigeon Speaks is a well known cryptofascist.

If your doing any phycology related course then your likely familiar with how people tend to idealize the past, this is likely true in this case and one of the big reasons why many younger people cop more shit than they should from older generations. I don't really know his history and lm sure he has a distorted view of his own past, but l still agree with a lot of his points. People are more and more taught that effort is the most important thing, that if you put in the effort then you will succeed. In truth effort is pretty meaningless to a good boss, results are what truly matter. If you do your best effort and still fail it probably looks worse than if you half-assed the same job and failed, at least there is a chance to improve if it's clear you can do better. Take running a race where the kid that won barely broke a sweat but the kid that came in 6th have their all, in the past only winning mattered where now more and more kids are taught that everybody is a winner. This not only makes the loser feel like they should continue trying at something they don't have an aptitude for but it also takes the incentive away from the winner.

That's the way the world works he says? Why would you stress out, suffer to WAIT for someone to find you, then reward you for hard work? You got to be more proactive than that in this world!

Workers are expendible. Doing your job well will get you a job long enough to get replaced by a lower paid worker. That's the real reason millenials are unmotivated. There is no reward for excellence.

True, good workers got rewarded and bad workers got fired back in the day but nowadays the cheapest worker gets the job and everyone else gets the boot.

There's a limit to that. In general, you get more if you pay more. If you pay people too little, they won't do a good job because it's not worth it to them to do so. Employers know this. They've tried to pay someone a lower wage. And they get a lower skill or lower conscientious worker. If someone does a really good job, employers don't want to lose them because they know how hard it is to get a reliable, good worker. They'd rather make you happy, most of the time, than gamble on finding someone just as good. The better you are, the less willing they are to take that gamble.

Give me a break. There simply isn't that much excellence in today's youth. In my experience, the good ones really do exceed. And when I say "good ones" I am talking about things like showing up on time. Or even showing up every day.
@dougptankerengr759
@dougptankerengr759 5 лет назад
I can only speak for myself, but that's not my belief at all. The amount of work (and expense) to training new employees makes me want to keep good ones around as long as I can. If someone is not cutting it, we try to improve their performance, and usually are successful. An experienced employee requires less supervision than a new hire, and makes the entire team more productive. Attitude is a huge part of who stays and goes. And a little hint... if your manager gives you feedback on your performance, either in an informal or formal evaluation, you might want to act on those recommendations.

I'm a retired software guy and I learned that working hard and doing an excellent job only offers you the opportunity to work harder. To get ahead, you had to create the illusion of working hard while kissing ass. Now I work in retail sales where nothing that you do is good enough. Hit 125% of your sales goal, why not 130%? Why didn't you sell anything today? No customers? That's no excuse. The secret to success is not hard work, good work, or showing up on time. The secret is kissing ass.

The reason that rules for the beach have multiplied is because in the 1950s people were still being brought up to respect others in public and didn't need a constant reminder of what not to do. Nowadays people are raised to love themselves more than they love others, not let others judge them, and most definitely not respect others or themselves

Just one suggestion: You should have opened the video with the closing line and said it at the beginning and at the end. "So, you're graduating and you're all idealistic. You want to make the world a better place. I only have one request: Don't make it WORSE." They needed to hear that twice.

Sounds like a nightmare boss from hell. Despite the "realness", this is a fantastic way to lose employees in droves. Oh wait, that doesn't matter right? You'll hire a replacement and all is fixed because employees are only do-gooders with no feelings, just faceless drones created to serve YOU. Praise be to you, the guy with the biggest salary. PRAISE BE! I will say this though, people like this are motivating to most employees, in that, it makes them feel like they can take the reins on their own. Being this a beautiful free market after all, there is nothing stopping an ex-employee from creating a business of their own and running people like Adam out of town. Wonder if he or bosses like him would feel like their "tough" persona was the winner's way if all of their stuff is being moved out of their building. Good shit, Carolla. Also you were never funny.
