The current culture of fear has made our kids nervous wrecks and has wreaked havoc on comedy in the process. Not taking yourself or your fears too seriously is one of the best ways to overcome them, so we sure aren’t setting up kids for success.
Today’s guest, Adam Carolla, isn’t afraid to tell his kids, and the rest of us for that matter, to toughen up, get over it, and move forward. He’s a comedian, podcast host, author of six books and star of the recent documentary ‘No Safe Spaces.’ In his latest book, ‘Everything Reminds Me of Something,’ he answers real questions from his fans and famous friends with an unapologetic sense of humor.

I grew up around hundreds of dogs over the years as my dad had a kennel. Some of them were pets, but we never treated them like people the way so many do today and we certainly never degraded them by dressing them like a child’s doll. 🤮

I've been a high school teacher and university professor for the past 30 years. I'm scared to death with the quality of kids I see entering the workforce and real world today. It hasn't been a gradual transition. This has all been done in the past 5-7 years at a neck-breaking pace. Parents...discipline your kids. Stop making excuses for them. All them to fall and skin their knees. Allow them the opportunity to develop mental grit. Our society is in serious trouble unless something drastically changes.

I totally agree. The expectations that are being set for what reality is like are WAY off. Young people come into jobs expecting to "get" more than to "give". That's not how capitalism works. Capitalism is a moral system precisely because you have to GIVE (work) in order to RECEIVE (get paid).

That’s what Adam is doing too. He’s going to blame his kids malaise about working on their mother (which is probably true) but Adam is going to hold their hands and nepo the crap out of every contact he’s ever had because who would want to work all day and night to live not even a quarter of the life they grew up in. Trusts are probably already in place and guaranteed and known about by the kids. He’s great and he’s my favorite but he is not immune to doing everything for his kids that makes them love him even more.

My high school son tried out for the wrestling team, was the starting center for the football team and is a relief pitcher for the varsity baseball team. All this as a sophomore. I couldn’t be more proud. It’s not that he’s a superstar athlete. He’s probably not a prospect for any division 1 college. I’m just proud that he embraces the work to get out there, recovery from failure and loss.

My son was bullied. I told my son bullies have a sad life probably because their parents suck and bullies need friends more than anybody. I said dont take sh¡t and stick up for yourself and protect others but you can always walk away. My precious lil sonny rose above and helped those kids.🥰 He stopped being bullied and found respect. P.S. i had to teach him how to f¡ght tho

I'm a high school teacher and I sat through this interview audibly agreeing with so much of what Carolla is saying. I see it happening in schools right now - and no matter what we do to try to push back against it, to infuse a dose of reality and pragmatism - the government or board shuts us down with more changes to conduct and/or curriculum. Hard work matters. Hardly anyone will think you're special. There is value in the trades. You may not like deskwork but use that time to build habits like resilience and work ethic. Nobody will help you as much as you can help yourself. Go out there and *do* something!

I am a GenXer with a 5yr old son. We keep him away from technology and we are raising him like a little boy. I wrestle with him and we go outside every chance we get. My wife and I do drawing and basic educational stuff everyday after preK ( not overloaded). I would like to ask you. as a teacher do you think parents and our culture relys to much on schools teaching our kids? I feel as a Father it is also my job to make sure he will do well in school. The money becoming invisible is a great analogy, I’m 57, I remember my first job they actually handed me a physical paycheck with the stub explaining how much of that pay went to the government, etc., and I would deposit most of it but always pulled out some cash because we didn’t have Apple Pay. Even writing a check keeps the money from becoming invisible because you had to physically write the words and numbers of the amount the check was for, so in a way you were still connected to it.

I grew up in rural Montana in the 80s and 90’s. I rode my bike dozens of miles a day down dirt roads to the reservoir and we played in the old slaughterhouse. Hung out with livestock. Pretty much the most freedom any kid had, but we knew all the neighbors and the town only had 80 people. If you stepped out of line, someone would tell your mom. 😂 it was a truly idyllic childhood experience. I hated school starting in junior high, though.

The wife and I have drilled our son about CREDIT. And work ETHIC. The same ethics and moral compass , that were passed down from our male and female veterans in the family . I'm proud to say he's learning an awesome TRADE in our home state. Getting certified for EVERYTHING. So in 5 or 10 years he's going to be a BUISSNESS owner and a BOSS🤞. SO lucky& PROUD because we're on the poverty line off and on FOREVER its seems. But our son won't be for long...PRAISE JESUS.

So true. My 16 year old son seems to have no burning desire to get his license. I find it strange because I couldn’t wait to get mine. My cousin and I were competing to see who would get theirs first. It was a huge deal. These kids today have zero desire to obtain independence and freedom. Everything is available in their room and computer.

@@Skeptic2244 everybody I know who got the shot got COVID, and one of my college friends died. I didn't get the shot because I got COVID in Jan 2020, but I never got COVID again. I didn't let my kids get it. They never got it. We went out every day, your vitamin D, played on the playground (it was a private one). I worked until they shut the schools down, and I had to stay home with my kids. I always thought it was a huge power play. And sadly, most of the world failed.

Various reasons I suppose, but one stands out to me. They fear that making them uncomfortable will just drive the kids to the path of least resistance for catharsis, which is social media, video games, and other things in the digital realm that have become the Soma of this age we live in. What those particular parents dont realize is, approaching being a parent as a labor of love as described in 1 Corinthians 13 "The Way of Love", even when some tough love is required, tends to defeat the empty, short-lived, Soma of the easy access digital realm which just soothes but leaves them still starving inside as it cant feed the soul like proper love does.

This was so good! When I was young we played outside from after school until dark. We drank out of the hose as going inside was unthinkable. We roamed the neighborhood and played in the gully. All the neighbors knew each other so if we were getting into trouble our parents would get a phone call (the phones were physically connected to the wall). We climbed trees, road the wagon down the park hills and learned risk tolerance. I dug holes in my grandpa's garden. I'm I firm believer in digging holes. It's builds character.

It's sad but true that most kids today are just happy to be at home where the food is free, tv's or vid games are always available...so why bother going outside? Also, cars and gas and insurance have become expensive and too many teens just can't be bothered taking the driver's test. 3 out of my 4 kids are like that!!

i'm 37 and when COVID happened i worked 7 days a week 10 hours a day for 7 months straight I loved it i didn't wear a mask i didn't get a vaccine neither did my children I made it a point to ask everyone with a mask on why were they wearing one and did they understand how the immune system works

I started roofing when I was 16, I started during summer vacations. I graduated in 93 and worked for my Uncle full time. I remember him showing me his calloused hands when I was 8 or 9 years old. They looked like a baseball mitt. I thought it was the coolest thing. My hands still like that and I am very proud of it. I am already training our son for work.

same here, but if I wanted something I could find ways of making money and earn to buy what I wanted and felt more proud of it! However, I was born in '68 and for me finding ways to earn extra money in the early 80's was way easier than it is now..

Any kind of discipline for a child is looked at as abuse, these days. Look how many people won't even tell their dog the word "no" because they think this will cause psychological harm to the dog. Telling a kid "no" or setting firm boundaries or making rules, or making them do their homework, it's all "abusive" now.

My mom after divorcing my dad and bankrupting him she threw me out on the streets at 14.. i was still the first one of all my friends to have my own car.. i had no choice i had no where to live so after school i had no home so i went to work cleaning dishes in a pizza place.. until i had enough for my own car which i moved into then my dad got me a job at 17 in the electrical union and i was able to get an apartment so while my friends were still in school i already had my own apartment and car before all them.. however i lost a ton stuff from being homeless i couldnt finish school because of it. So i missed all the highschool years because i had to drop out early so i can work and have food..

Adams perception is pretty spot on in regards in attempting to understand things completely opposite of our growing up (79' last of generation X aka facts over feelings generation and im so blessed). Sadly he hit it on the head when he said, " its kind of....pathetic." Great analogies on many different points of the topic. Im a dad of 3 girls 20, 14, and 11. And i still trip out on some of the stuff they DONT wanna do🤦🏼‍♂️

( Robert Diello ) 🇺🇸 Adam Carolla is 100 percent correct. I am so glad that I was a boy in the '70's and a teenager in the '80's. Dad was Dad. Mom was Mom. I have 1 younger brother, he got me Adam's book "In 20 years we'll all be chicks" for Christmas in about 2003. He was right, I was right, and Dad was right. Even Mom was right; and probably our dog and cat too. Grandpa and Grandma in fact, the WW II generation have more in common with us Gen-Xer's. With me Grandpa was also a big influence on me, and Grandma as well, kind of a 2nd Mom who didn't take any cr@p or shenanigans from me or my brother; having gone through The Great Depression. I really do think they were "The Greatest Generation". My brother is 6 years younger and also Gen-X, he's basically the same too. Somehow, somewhere along the way something went VERY wrong. It's insane to me now, and sad.

I work in the public schools. The number of 17 and 18 year olds still riding the bus absolutely baffles me. I attended this same high school in the 80s and we hardly ever saw anyone that age taking the bus still. I’ve asked some of my students, they simply don’t care and lack the motivation to take drivers ed let alone pass the tests. My students all live in million dollar homes, near a private golf course and club. Money is not the issue.

@@PeteQuadMaybe the more populated areas of the country are like what Adam is describing…here in the Philly area I resonate with what Adam is talking about…as a parent and someone in my 40s. My childhood is light years away from that of my children’s…and it’s a huge effort to try to “right the ship” in terms of the effects of the current culture my kids are growing up in and around.

I did of course make a regular effort over the years to discuss life and society with them, but I'm not sure if it mattered or not.

I am a therapist and just got off the phone with a parent who was concerned that her 13 year old step son was “suicidal” because he jumped off of a low roof onto a trampoline to see how high he could bounce. I call that “thirteen year old boy”, and she wasn’t satisfied- kept pressing for a diagnosis.

When I was a kid if I wanted to go somewhere, I either road my bike, hitchhiked or walked. Kid's now have a parent to drive them everywhere and anywhere they want to go. I couldn't wait to drive!

Ditto on all my dads home construction, mechanical, and landscaping projects. It was a rural area. No McDonalds for 70 miles. I spent a ton of time on a roof, attic, crawl spaces. You name it, I did it. This might as well be another planet compared to 1995. I also wonder if you have been in the city or California in particular too long. There aren’t so many people like that where I live in Utah or where my family is in Montana. What I notice is that youth today think that even the slightest discomfort is trauma and you get the role of being a victim. They like the attention and righteousness they feel as a victim. And they just keep going with it until it’s automatic.

@@JohnPapola I respect this approach, however I now disagree with it to some extent. We all grew up working the jobs. I definitely learned more working than playing high school sports. I felt like I got a bit of Stockholm syndrome. I am raising my kids to learn skills for life and developing skills. I definitely make them understand that life is difficult and serious. And they are expected to stand on their own early as adults.

I had a client I was doing an addition on a house for about 1 1/2 years ago. Her and her wife would openly talk down about my guys and I with their daughter, (who was a boy in reality). I asked her to please stop and she said my words were an attack against her and were full of violence. I told her my price was now $20/hour higher and all my guys were $10/hour more because her words required reparations. She still owes me $3,000 and I’ll never see that money. Also her addition is still incomplete because she and her wife are so aggressive and mean and now nobody is available to do the complicated work we started so to complete it she’ll have to actually pay even more then my inflated amount. (She’s called my wife a few times begging me to return and even “offered” to pay me the money she still owes me).

The show made me think back to when i was a kid growing up just a few years behind Adam and yeah we spent our time outside mostly. I think the comforts of modern living make kids want to stay home. Before we would escape to the mall for the A/C the movies, the socializing, ECT.. we spent our time interacting with our peers in actual real space. The real spaces have been being replaced with being on the internet and sitting around a entertainment centric household with nice air conditioning

I think these kids have been pampered to the point that they have no desire to leave. That is the fault of parents. Not me specifically bit in general. I pampered my daughter until she made an extremely poor decision by testing the rules I had laid down and then threahtened me with moving out when I refused to waver from my position. I told her to not allow the door to hit her in the ass on the way out. Move out she did, and it was a great relief for me, since I no longer worried about where she was every day and it turned out to be a great experience for her as well. Sometimes you just need to present them with a situation that they refuse to tolerate. They need to do this sooner or later.

If their sons dont want their license it says a lot about the parents. Their boys arent being inspired to live, and explore the real world, or have a sense of adventure. My 15 year old little cousin is literally building his own motorcycle with my uncle, and learning how to weld. His best friend is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Their parents dont spoil them with a super convenient life of luxury, and challenge them in healthy ways. Modern convenience is no excuse to live a life of obscurity.

Funny about the participation trophies. I was all-state academic (yes, I was actually on varsity, a starter, and we did go to the state championships that year), but even winning all-state academic, I was like, "Meh, I'm among the best players who isn't a complete idiot." Lol. I still wanted the raw award for being the best regardless of the academics.

Yeah, that's one thing the older generations don't realize or understand, most millennials didn't take the participation trophies seriously. I'm 34, and I remember being very proud about getting the straight A student award in 6th grade, but I didn't care about the "You completed 6th grade" certificate that everyone got. I liked being recognized for my accomplishments and any award that was given to everyone was just meaningless.

You had to stand there and take your loser badge, hahaha, because we were taught to suck it the fuck up when we lost and act like gentlemen (and would get punished if we didn't). I guess the main difference is that, after that, they gave out the real awards, haha, and today just nobody wins?

It all starts with parents. It’s up to us to regulate what they can and cannot do or have. We are the ones who are supposed to teach them. It’s our responsibility to correct them when the education system is corrupting them in school.

I am 51 and I dont drive. I WALK everywhere I go. Including long distances. And I do all my grocery shopping on foot + carry it home 2+ miles. I dont use uber or those things as I have allergies to scents (air freshener, perfume, etc).. I wasn't allowed to learn to drive × had no interest in it.. I wasn't allowed to do most things teens do.. I was bullied a lot. And in 2020 I found out I have autism. And PTSD. Some parents say no so much that you are not allowed to do stuff like have friends in the neighborhood. Because they are narcissist... But these days I am learning to ride a horse. Who needs a car if you can ride a horse? That horse is a better friend than a person as the horse accepts you as you are.. Expecting a teen to actually want to drive when they are being strictly controlled × not even allowed to do normal things is totally illogical! If i would even mention something I would get yelled at! You quickly learn not to ask for anything × to sit on your room to read library books..at least I was allowed to go to the library as a teen. I guess because it was free and it kept me quiet. But i was not allowed to have friends or to ask for clothes (there were no back to school clothes shopping trips), no dating, no going to restaurants, etc.. Living in a big city but none of that stuff was allowed. And I was bullied horribly at school & ostracized. We did not have a phone either. And this was in the 80s. All of this stuff has left me with PTSD. So there may be another reason some teens don't want to drive. These things are often hid. Neighbors don't know this stuff is going on. Its kept secret. And its very damaging. And then you don't know the common things you should know as you were never taught the stuff.

Here's a real time 2022 example of teens & cash vs CC or apple pay. Five high school boys (seniors) came in and had lunch where I work. Very polite and easy little group. They had separate checks and I presented each with their bill. One young man hesitantly handed me a fifty dollar bill and asked me ''so how am I going to get change back from this??? I thought he was kidding and quickly saw he was serious and explained I would give him change back from the fifty and told him how much he would get back. He apologized because he didn't use cash much and relied on "plastic or PayPal or his parents to do his transactions ….17-18 year old's not being taught how to handle or count CASH is a modern society failure on the part of parents and our public school curriculums. Adam is absolutely correct about connecting personal value to the earning of tangible money.
