The record-setting CPV technology behind the Alamosa Solar project in Colorado offers utilities a viable option in hot, dry climates.
spie.org/op - Solar Energy + Technology at SPIE Optics + Photonics
Adam Plesniak is Director of Research and Development at Amonix, Inc., in Seal Beach, CA. His team is responsible for generating, incubating and integrating new technology into the Amonix product line. The R&D group at Amonix currently holds the world record for PV module efficiency at 35.9% at CSTC as verified by NREL in 2013. He also serves as chair of the SPIE Optics + Photonics conference on Low and High Concentrator Systems for Solar Energy Applications.
Previously, he was Engineering and Design Lead at Boeing Phantomworks where his team developed the Boeing XR700 Photovoltaic Concentrator under contract from the DOE Solar Energy Technology Program. The XR700 was the first concentrator module to break 28% efficiency with greater than 800x concentration and +/- 2 degree acceptance angle. The technology was subsequently licensed to a private company outside of Boeing for continued development and commercialization.
Plesniak has an MS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Amonix, Inc. manufactures concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) commercial solar power systems designed for installation in sunny and dry climates. CPV systems convert sunlight into electrical energy in the same way that conventional solar photovoltaic technology does, except that they use optical concentrators to focus the solar radiation before the light is absorbed by solar cells. According to a comparative study of energy production of solar technologies, CPV systems require no water for energy production and produce more energy per megawatt (MW) installed than traditional PV systems. Amonix has nearly 70 Megawatts(DC) of CPV solar power systems deployed globally, including the southwestern U.S. and Spain.

Wow so well done, excellent description. I Love the fact that you are pioneering the limits of solar as this will eventually spill over to the average consumer… kinda like tech that came from the space program that now is a part of our everyday use. Good job

10 years later and nothing has "spilled" into residential solar.

I’m more impressed with your cone sensor…any info or if it’s sold separately? This hydraulic system is overwhelming….like a tracker on steroids..!

I like it. It cuts down on the amount of surface area to produce solar energy. This means a lot less solar panels to produce the same amount of energy. There must be a balance between the higher cost of the moving tracker and the savings from using less solar panels and less land.

The cost thought is prohibit, your better off getting a 2 axis 20/ x 370/380 pannels for home setups

Any kind of strong wind would twist that sail in a circle. It’s nice. Lots of out put.

Your opinion is proven very wrong, by the *fact* , their 30 megawatt solar farm is operational. Facts over-rule your opinion.

How long will the system take to pay back the gazillion dollar install price?

About the same as any other power plant. Have you tried to build a natural gas or nuclear power plant where it is very HOT and very DRY - ie no water for cooling?

I'd love to know what "solar cell" is 40% (I assume you've mentioned efficiency)?

30%

Standard cell efficiency is already 18-20% but this is a different cell that can tolerate greater temperature. You are looking at plastic concentrates. The cell is underneath.

Hello can you tell me what type of cells you use and how hot they actually get and what sort of efficiency lost do they get I have a way to keep them much much cooler and I'm wondering if that would be helpful design Improvement on these could you also tell me the maximum amount of Suns that could hit a solar cells of this type or the Silicon type if the cell remains cool

No. The location and time of sunrise, solar noon and sunset changes dramatically over the seasons.

Cant get it. The whole turning/following system costs 10 times more than the panels. Whats the point ?, just add more panels and forget the complex system.
@RynaxAlien

in the shadow efficiency drops a lot
@MsSomeonenew
@MsSomeonenew 6 лет назад
Ya, you could only make this solar installation more expensive if you gold plated the entire structure.
@MrSummitville
@MrSummitville 19 дней назад
@@RynaxAlien"Shadowing" only occurs at sunrise and sunset, when the sun's energy is low. Als, there is software the performs "anti-shadow" tracking, now. So, what do you really know about the "shadow" issue?
@abeyaras
@abeyaras 5 лет назад
Looks very complex.. unlikely for multi mw projects. O&M too high .
@movax20h
@movax20h 5 лет назад
Even bigger issue is self shading when you have multiple of these units close to each other. Unless you can repurpose the land under these units, it is not worth it.
@HansKeesom
@HansKeesom 5 лет назад
@@movax20h Virtual tracking, which is placing panels in east-west setup, is much simpler, more storm resistant and due to lower prices of panels, a much better idea.

Too complicated, and 30% efficiency isn't that great. Why don't you tell everyone that your setup won't last more than 5 or 6 years because you're cooking the life out of the PV cells.
@100_vadlavikramchary9
@100_vadlavikramchary9 2 года назад
my guy 30% is a good amount. most popular pv is poly it has efficiency of only 18% so u want to remove them too
@edwardkiepper1563
@edwardkiepper1563 2 года назад
@@100_vadlavikramchary9 regardless, show me who's using this complicated setup. I'd be happy to look at it. As far as regular PV cells go, I like them so don't assume that I would want them removed too.
