He always made me INTENSELY uncomfortable in videos and i couldnt place why, so it is so gratifying to see everything condensed into this video. This is why its tough to call out abusers/gross people in general- its always small nitpicks, disguised as jokes or written off because they arent big or mean enough to make a stink about in the moment. When you see them all compiled together, though, the pattern is undeniable. Fuck Adam Rapoport.
These are called microaggressions. And they're the new, ugly ways in which racism, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny etc prevail in today's day and age. I am so glad he was called out. It's our job to educate others on how to identify these types of microagressions and help others become cognizant and mindful of how we may sometimes unconsciously feed into them.
That’s what ive been saying!!! besides his shitty comments, hes always been sus because the whole atmosphere of the room shifts whenever he’s in the room
why is he even still at bon a petit ? They could afford to fire him , there are PLENTY of skilled people looking to take his place, better yet, POC people. They need to hire more poc.
He didn’t only cut Brad off rudely while filming but also made fun of him and went away like he was just standing there to be a bully. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth that Carla was laughing at it even though she was probably trying to brush it off but I feel bad for him.
I hadn't even thought about that. I'm convinced he insists they don't edit him out because HE is the one that is "look-at-me, look-at-me", not Andy. As evidenced by his strolling in playing guitar knowing full well that not only is that dangerous in a kitchen but that they're filming. He makes the damn schedule, for f-cksake. And to make sure he gets in the shot he attacks Brad. The look on Brad's face says it all. The guys a jerk.
Andrew Rea talking to Brad: "I didn't go to culinary school." Brad: "That's cool. I did; I didn't learn anything." Adam: "IF you had gone to cooking school you would have learned all about ice baths...I took cooking classes at l'Academie de Cuisine..." That's the difference between a humble person who knows what they're doing in the kitchen and an arrogant person who doesn't.
Everyone laughs it off because he is their boss and has power over them. It’s like if the class clown was also the teacher and you knew they could give you an F on your next essay if you didn’t laugh at their shitty jokes.
@@josephp.1919 I had a teacher like this. He used to tell these stupid and insensitive jokes about students and if the other students didn't laugh or called him out on it he would give them detention. He also used to award extra credit to students who came up with "jokes" he deemed funny. Definitely the same energy as this idiot.
I have low key gotten the impression he has a crush on molly and for somereason being extra condescending is his way of trying to win her over (eye roll)
Did y’all see Andy’s reaction when he picked Molly to answer his question first... definitely exhibiting his schoolyard bully behavior just for reactions.. what a toxic person
Claire: "I wasted one on Adam when I shouldve given it to Sohla who actually cares about what we're doing here" IF THAT ISN'T THE REAL TAKE AWAY OF IT ALL. (Also how do you eat a gourmet version of any food claire makes and choose the og? Red flag.)
@@isabella2977 Yes exactly! I always thought that she doesn't have her own show because she's too professional to make silly clumsy videos like the others and just there to do her thing in the background and help out whenever needed. Like she's the only one who can temper chocolate!
The same way I will probably always enjoy McNuggets more than any homemade/gourmet version. Familiarity and filthy capitalist indoctrination. That doesn't make it a red flag though lol. There's so many things to criticise him for, so I dunno why you chose to target his preferences
@@AntiSoraXVI woah buddy, it's just when someone puts so much time and effort into making something better then putting them down is just not a nice way to talk to anyone? Yeah he had way worse problems, it's still just rude.
@@madisonwood3379 I get that, but next to everything else, it just seems like a non-issue. Especially when everyone gives their opinion on Claire's work (some positive and some not) after tasting it
Though to be fair Sohla did misuse the current political climate and made rather unreasonable assertions about Adam. Adam is an judgemental ass, however him dressing as a stereotypical rapper/gangster on a dress up party wasn't black face as Sohla suggested. Sohla also was a rather recent addition to the test kitchen and really just complained that she didn't already have a full show or got payed for that level. Sure she has expirience, but not seniority. Personally I'm happy Adam is gone as he just made everybody consistantly uncomfortable and acted like an ass but the assertions made by both Sohla and people supporting her are even more unreasonable. (then again outrage mobs, "woke" or not, tend to be rather unreasonable)
@@relo999 Sohla didn't originate the Adam brownface scandal. Also at the end of the day holding people, esp privileged men in power accountable isn't outrage. PoC being undermined and not paid for their contributions or specifically marginalized IS an issue. At the end of the day any slight defense of tht behavior is questionable and u obviously do not relate to being subjugated due to ur gender and race.
I watch this interview and they elaborate on it- chris is smart and cares a a lot so he doesn't mince words but also cares about his coworkers- huge team player. Adam just puts people own because it makes him feel better about himself.
@@wildhearses yeah, Chris never said mean things out of his ass as Adam did, there's a reason why the BA staff trust his opinion so much and it's because it comes from a place of sincere help and understanding. Adam, on the other hand, is just straight up nasty.
exactly. chris is never rude. his intent is to always improve the food and gives feedback. you can tell that he is straightfoward but still respectful and his coworkers get along with him well. adam on the otherhand is just mean.
For real Brad exudes an aura of joy, anybody who is able to take that away is obviously a dementor. Dude sucks the soul out of the room the moment he steps into it...
he seems really insecure when he's picking on Brad honestly? like it must be hard for him not to notice that Brad's funnier and more likable than him and it's also pretty obvious he desperately wishes he was funny and cool
Like a kicked puppy. I could just scream. You could see the exact moment the energy drained out of him. How does your day recover after someone inflicts theirself on you like that? Decorum aside the appropriate response is “Aren’t you supposed to less of a monumental jerk than this?” I wish that any unquashed person at all could’ve been there in the moment to stand up for/with Brad, Sohla, Priya, Molly, Claire, everyone. We couldn’t be there then, but we’re here now as best we can be.
Yall I didn't even know about the controversy and I swear I hated how he just walked in and acted like he was the smartest and most interesting person in the room. He literally put all videos he was a part of to a halt the moment he walked in. I always rolled my eyes when he walked in. Like "ugh, can you leave so people can have fun and be productive pleease"
I agree - you can understand why they all jumped to get behind Sohla when she spoke up. They were all just waiting for the right moment, and when it happened they jumped at the opportunity to get rid of this jackass.
This is so creepy and the even more worrying thing is that this is just the footage that made it to the final edits. I hate to think what got cut because it was deemed too bad for public consumption!
Adam, being called out for being judgemental: "hey I don't work in the test kitchen! Also Adam, being judgemental about the staff's pie: "but I work here!"
His entrance was literally a cue for me to look for the point where he left the frame. I'm absolutely awful at picking up on social cues, like people being uncomfortable, but I do understand what's funny and what's not... His mere presence killed any fun was there whenever he was in the frame - and sometimes even when he wasn't...
Also, the time when Claire made Ben and Jerry's ice-cream versions of everyone, the best ice cream name was Sohla's and Claire was so very proud of it, but Adam took all the joy from her face with his demeaning ways. Blew up the whole chapter.
Bragging about his credentials when his cooking is consistently the most boring, uninspired, and often technically wrong. He's just consistently awful, rude, and inappropriate.
Whenever he would walk into the camera frame I would literally be so bummed. He's that kid in school that is so freaking annoying and demand all the attention when the rest of us were trying to be polite and secretly wish he would just go away. I SO SO SO miss BA's videos. They are fun, informative and so well edited. (sad face)
That dig at Claire though..."this is the first thing you've done that I liked better than the original." That's just rude and mean, and I mean, based on how everyone else reacts to what she makes vs the original, must mean he's got bad taste. Dick.
He reminds me of that one annoying guy in class that thinks he’s friends with everyone when in reality they all hate him and talk shit when he’s not around
Conde Nast seem to gravitate towards executives that are “belittlers” and self-important in lieu of true leaders. Rappaport and Wintour are no gems for humankind.
I agree Yet Anna Wintour got away with it for decades, and will continue to in the future. Rapoport reported to her. She is to blame for this gross behavior and culture; yet, she stays on. Her power is incredible
I always thought he had a weird relationship with Molly. She was def not interested in having him in the videos but I think he was a lil interested in her 👀
Sarah Elizabeth yeah it always seemed like in his head it was back and forth banter but to everyone else it was him being rude and her calling him out on it
It's funny how everyone seemed to unanimously hate Adam Rapoport but couldn't find a reason why....this just tells us to trust our gut instincts yall. We got him.
Yeah! The videos with him were always weird but I just couldn't pinpoint why. I wonder how much work the editors had to do to keep even more of hos agression off the air
"this tells us to trust our gut instincts" *No it doesn't,* we literally had a reason to hate him on pretty much every appearance and *every single time* it was called out in the comments. …I was gonna say what the real moral of the story was but I can't find anything. Sometimes, life just sucks and then we die. Oh yeah, transparency. We never had any. Everything on the videos was friendly and shiny and pretty and social media didn't help matters. When everything looks too good to be true, we have to ask ourselves if maybe it's actually staged.
How times have changed... I was CRUCIFIED on YT and Reddit for calling Adam a scumbag like two years ago for his treatment of Andy. And now? Now you see it too. Good. And good riddance to Rapo.
RU-vid is all herd mentality. If you criticize someone on a channel, most people don't think critically and will pile on you. But now it's'cool' to hate Adam so that's all people will do for the most part
I've always loved Molly clapping back at him but it's also kinda sad how she's the only one who felt safe enough to do it ☹️ Which is in no way her fault, btw
@@luns486 I didn't get that, I can see Adam has a superiority complex towards her, specially about her not going to cooking school and being self-taught. I meant that she feels safe bc at the end of the day, if she ever gets fired, her case for unlawful termination can actually go somewhere, and she won't be ignored.
@@bettyflores1742 to be fair, she's safe for both of those reasons. And the niggling at her about cooking school thing is one of the biggests reasons I suspect he's into her. Classic playground flirting. Either way, what a colossal douchbag.
@@bettyflores1742 Adam clearly has a complex where he sees his interactions with Molly as "flirtatious banter" despite Molly literally being married. Definitely workplace harassment, and anyone seeing if from the outside knows that Molly absolutely hates him.
@@bettyflores1742 she probably wouldnt have a good case cause at the end of the day in most states if they can even show a hint of what they put on your pink slip being why you got fired you're fucked for wrongful termination
I am glad I can voice my inherent distaste of this man openly now! From the first time I saw him in a BA video I was so put off...literally triggers memories of every bad interaction I've ever had with an annoying white guy who throws his privilege around. Ugh.
john salvatore they’re pretty notorious for treating their interns/workers like trash, especially their workers of color. Even ones that appeared regularly in their popular videos. Some of them after leaving have expressed that they didn’t feel like their ideas and creativity was as valued as their white coworkers among similar issues.
Wow, all of your comments make me realise how horrible my old job was, when I just brushed it off because I have high anxiety and it was my first job. So proud of all of BA that spoke out, I know it would have taken so much strength 💖
As much as I fucking detest Rapoport and find him utterly reprehensible, I think everyone might be projecting on that one. I mean my own mother mixes up my name with my siblings’ all the time...
Christian Sanders I think it’s def one of those situations where it can be one way or the other. The first time, honest mistake. The second time, sure we can let it go. The third time, come on dude. If he was a sparkling individual I would let it go, but with all the other things he’s done, it becomes very very suspect
@@christiansanders6242 That's quite common. If I remember correctly, people organise personal names by importances. So your mother would have placed her family members into the "important names" category. It's easy to accidentally recall the wrong name from this group. But if you're not close to the individual, you're going to be spending a few seconds recalling their name, so it's less common to swap names.
If I were Priya, I would’ve responded “my name is Priya, Richard”. Just hit him back with a generic white man name with the added bonus being that Dick is short for Richard.
It's funny how we would never watch a video of just him but we love to watch videos with him and Molly because she will not hold back anything she has to say against him
I would have laughed in his face when he took time to let everyone know what cooking school he went to. I bet Adam has older brothers who never let him win growing up.
I specifically remember starting to dislike adam when he was berating molly about her food knowledge and he didnt even know how to keep garlic from burning and becoming bitter
So glad that this compilation exists because I’ve always gone back to these moments in these videos. It’s always been so clear everyone felt uncomfortable around him. When he was finally told to resign I wasn’t surprised.
Yooooo he gives me anxiety. Literally one of those managers at your job where you clock in, and have to go do a prayer or quick meditation before you start your shift because you know you’re gonna be irritated at some point. And the type of manager you skip and do cart wheels away from in your way home when you finally quit your job.
This man really walked ON SET and showed he was doing jackshit during company time by playing a guitar, pestering his employees and interrupting shooting, making editing harder due to him making a bunch of random noise not usual to the kitchen. Truly showing how unprofessional he is and how he obviously thinks he is above everyone and should be the star.
I remember when I worked for a very racists boss and when ever she was at work this was the same exact way we all would clench up and behave. Even the atmosphere in this video felt the same way. What sucks is, he'll get a great severance pay when fired smfh
@@Becky0494 he probably resigned to keep his severance thats how these sorts of things work you get fired for allegations of sexual harassment or racist behavior "step down" and ride the severance for a few weeks or months until you pop up somewhere else
I NEVER LIKED HIM! the first time i saw him was in the brads video when he says “you were suposed to be funnier like this” and make him feel like a clown for and audience, his face of sadness :(
I see a lot of praising, rightfully so, Molly for speaking back against Adam. Let’s acknowledge that as a white woman she was more in a position to speak back and not be at risk of losing her job than her BIPOC peers.
Yes, 100% agree with you. Thanks for the reminder, though. Because I've been the white woman at work fighting back, and I was --am-- angry at the injustice of having to fight back, but yeah, at least I could. I don't take that for granted, now.
Is this it?? THis is the toxic behaviour? A bit of banter at work and focusing on excellence ...in a kitchen. My God - it's way more toxic that people get stabbed in the back in the interests of creating a 'safe environment'. What's he supposed to do at 2:20 ? 'No the way you're cooking that dish is different than I would have done it, but it's equally valid' ...gimme a break.
oh of courseee he gets on molly about culinary school when he himself hasn't gone, but molly has restaurant experience??? let's not forget that delaney (the dude that made a confederate flag cake) did not go to culinary school or have any restaurant experience... it's really amazing what doing the absolute least as a white man will get u
Stop it, Delany made the cake for a friend 10 YEARS ago and has already apologized for it. Do not try to make it seem like Delany is some white supremacist that hasn't earned his position
@@tjblackwell1456 there are also tons of other problematic posts of his that he has not addressed (including using a homophobic slur and objectifying young women at conde nast). while I want to believe he has changed, his bs IG story apology is not one I want to accept. also earned?? it's very clear that he is underqualified for the position he has. he is a drinks editor but has never worked in a bar? come on, even ik what drinks should be shaken and not stirred. what i do know is that he had a whole show where he just ate food at restaurants, but Sohla and Gabby were never paid for their numerous appearances saving the other paid test kitchen members.
Molly is the best bc she constantly called him out on his BS. Like saying he was just judgemental while Chris was critical, she just hit the nail on the head with that and she wasn't afraid to do so
It feels like he kind of picked each staff member to fill a slot. “Hey, aren’t you the funny one...” or confusing the the 2 brown female staff. He doesn’t appreciate each person for their individual knowledge, skill, personality etc. P.S Sohla is one of my favorite at BA and she always gets slept on ):
I’m going to take a shot in the dark and say he’s a narcissist? Also in the variety show, there were quite a few of these cringe moments with Adam showing his colours, the one that sticks out to me is when he told Carla her hair looked bad... on a LIVE show, with a LIVE audience!! Wtf.
I remember Claire mentioned in a Gourmet Makes video about how Adam makes her feel bad and yells at her. I never really liked him, but I just attributed it to my general distrust of older white men, but when she mentioned that, I knew there was something more going on. Glad that we're finally learning the truth about him.
They had a youtube channel and a concept that could have been worth like 100x more than the magazine ever could and they threw it away over egos and racism. Like all they had to do was not be condescending weirdos and just pay the charismatic chefs like double what they were paying and that's it. Huge success. They blew it up over stupidity.
I didn't even know he was like in charge of the test kitchen the few times seeing him. I watched the video where he cooked with Molly and just thought "oh man I hope they never have him on again that's was awfully tense"
It was pretty obvious in most of the Bon Appétit videos Adam Rapoport appeared in that the test kitchen staff did not like him, he also seemed to be very oblivious to it.
0:38 I think what's most telling is how everyone's eyes seem to pause and glaze over at some point during an interaction with Adam. The two options seem to be either the thousand yard stare or staring awkwardly into the camera in a "you seeing this shit" kinda way.
What trash. Gotta love when everyone in a workplace has to smile and tiptoe around that one person that has some authority and all the rudeness and poor behaviour.
