This NEEDS to be said: If a doctor prescribes you vitamins due to you being deficient (the common one is Vitamin D, usually from lack of sunlight), you may need to take them to improve your general well-being. Too much of something isn't good for you but not enough of it is worse.

I take vitamins, but that's mainly because I'm an extremely picky eater, and I also live in a Nordic country so it's pretty common to get a vitamin D definiency up here due to the lack of sun in the winter.

I've been severely medically malnourished, bloodwork still came out fine only lacking potassium (which is important, but not availible over the counter in pharmacies here). Multi vitamins are scams unless your doctor has done bloodwork on you and literally prescribes you certain vitamins.

@Dmitry Terek You know natural selection requires the unhealthy people not to reproduce and for the genes of those people to leave the gene pool? It doesn't happen in just one generation. If you're an unhealthy person, you don't just magically adapt. You die and let the people whose genes support the conditions reproduce and propagate their genes.
@Zeverinsen
@Zeverinsen 4 года назад
@Dmitry Terek You try cutting out sunlight and vitamin D from your diet and see how you feel. I suffer from a chronic vitamin D deficiency, especially because it's dark outside half the year, and whenever the sun comes back I feel better. Additionally, "blacks" don't have an innate lactose intolerance, only babies (ALL babies) have an innate tolerance of it. If your statement was true, no "black" baby could be breast fed. Adults generally lose this tolerance, because milk is made for babies after all, but tolerance can be kept or built up again by frequent consumption. Some people with European heritage just uphold their tolerance easier, because of how the dairy production and consumption throughout the centuries have affected their genes, just like some Europeans tan easier than others. At least study the topic thoroughly before you make assumptions.
@LeaFsinger74
@LeaFsinger74 4 года назад
Vit D deficiency is common. I think supplementing for that, especially in places without much sun is smart. (AND recommended by medical pros- IF you're deficient, and about 30% of us are. ) :) A little B12 for vegans like me is easy to get as well- nooch- but yeah, many extra vitamins are just totally unneeded to harmful.

@stensoft
@stensoft 7 лет назад
Mostly, yes. There are reasons when you may want to get higher doses than regularly (vitamin C lowers the probablity of getting cold under high stress, such as high physical activity in cold environment, and may shorten the illness) but you can do the same with high-vitamin food like the mentioned lemons (which actually are not so rich in vitamin C as people usually think, guavas, lychees and black currant are much, much richer but they don't taste good in your tea) as with expensive vitamin supplements. Manganese is a trace element, not a vitamin. You can get plenty of it from salad, fruits, nuts or whole wheat products. Not having enough manganese is actually extremely rare.

Adam isn't telling us to stop taking vitamins at all, just that we're probably taking one too many and that we should only be taking them if you don't get them in your diet. Even then, vitamins from food are always safer and more balanced than that from a pill. So, only take them if absolutely necessary.

+RandomGamerCory No. Pesticides used to be very harmful, but due to their harm they were discontinued a while ago. It used to be that when you bought a fruit, you had to wash it in the sink before taking a bite. Nowadays however, pesticides mostly come in the form of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's) and are genetically designed to be resistant to diseases and pests. Those GMO's are not harmful by a long shot. In fact, most GMO's are completely beneficial to our health, although that does not mean all GMO's are safe. Whether something is genetically modified or not says nothing about it's safety.

I feel that vitamin supplements are not NECESSARY as much as they are to be sure you have all of the ones you may not be having enough of. For example, I had a vitamin D deficiency a few years back because of my lack of sunlight hours and lack of dairy products. If I had partaken in more of what I was missing or taken supplements I would not have a deficiency.
@hassi44
@hassi44 8 лет назад
+Shroomly Baby~ That is true, however, many people simply take multivitamin supplements to counteract a deficiency that they may or may not have. Many people just assume they have a deficiency when they feel ill when in reality all they have is a common cold. Those who do go to supplement a deficiency that they actually have often use multivitamins that supplement even those that they don't need. If you think you have a deficiency, go see a doctor. He/she will tell you if you do have a vitamin or mineral deficiency and will advice you on which supplements to take, if any. Most doctors will advice you to change your diet and activity schedule instead of suggesting supplementation, which makes sense since vitamin supplementation is solely a product marketed for profit and not to aid your health. Your diet and activity schedule should be enough to keep your vitamins and minerals in check, unless you have a disease that makes them necessary, in which case, a doctor wouldn't direct you to the local grocery store's health section but rather a clinic where you get those nutrients through an IV.
@TheDouglasblast

Or if you eat the typical American/westernized diet in which people are deficient in countless nutrients helping to lead to an early death and lower quality of life. The average American or westernized dieter, falls short of a tremendous amount of nutrition. That's what eating a diet based around meat, eggs, dairy and refined foods gets you. We need to be eating a diet rich in and ideally, entirely made up of, fruits, veggies, seeds, nuts, beans/legumes.

What Adam didnt address is the typical western diet doesnt provide you with all the of the necessary nutrients we *should* be getting. Which is partially the reason we have an obesity epidemic in this country (poor diet that is, not lack of vitamins) To suggest they are the answer to any sickness, I do agree is false. But to say "theyre not good for us" is incorrect and quite honestly a bit reckless on their part. The fact is we DONT eat a regularly balanced diet and this is why vitamin supplements are important for a lot of the people.

Jeremy Mack I thought that too until I went to my doctor and got a vitamin profile done. I was overweight and ate mostly junk food, but she still said it was a waste of time. I insisted and when I got my results back she was right. Only thing I was deficient in was iron. I got tested a couple years later and still was only deficient in iron and folate. I think a larger problem is some people not being able to absorb iron or other nutrients. I've never not been iron deficient. Even on iron supplements.

obesity problem has more to deal with level of activity, rather than diet, I lived in Jamaica for 17 years, and I ate exorbitant amounts of food, but... I was never overweight, because of the level of activity I had in Jamaica, I never actively took time out to exercise, but my day to day activities were more than enough, when just doing regular stuff like going to school, or getting something to eat, when I left Jamaica, I weight 180 pounds stably, and within 6 months of moving to the US I weighed 260 pounds...worse part of that is that I eat alot less here than I did back home, I now have to be putting time aside to get exercise, and to not eat too much...kids don't really need vitamins, unless they're suffering from a serious deficiency or medical disorder

Sometimes you can have a deficiency of a vitamin or mineral and supplements can help with that. Last summer I got severe plantar Fasciitis. All the remedies from the medical establishment said, don't walk, get massages, stretch. After 3 months it was so painful, but as an electrician moving is part of my job so I couldn't just sit back. Decided to take Usana, and within 30 days the Fasciitis went away. I thought could it be coincidental? So I stopped taking them, and within a couple of weeks it returned. Then started supplementing again and it went away.

This video kind of makes me sad. My father believed in vitamin megadoses and I got into an argument with him once about vitamin C. I had to look up Linus Pauling and explain that there wasn't any real evidence that megadoses work, and that it was wasteful and kinda useless to take large doses of vitamin C and that what he was already taking daily was more than enough. Of course, Adam pointing out that Pauling died of cancer isn't really an argument in itself, he was 93 when he died. Get to that age and it is not surprising to end up with some form of cancer. My father was also health obsessed and a die hard vitamin user, probably because he lived in such poor health most of his life from things mostly out of his control, and he made it to 90. Perhaps being health obsessed gives you longevity because you don't spend your time doing stuff more likely to get you killed.

There is a golden middle ground as usual. For example, If I don't take a multi vitamin a day I wake up with leg cramps in the night if is was a work out day. It never happens if I have taken just one cheap (less than 10 cents per pill) generic multi V. One multi vitamin a day is great and a very inexpensive insurance policy. Actually, your brain thinks that the vitamin changes the situation, but really, you are the one putting your leg at fault through mistakes while exercising which can cause straining the leg, arm, torso, etc. the vitamin doesn't do jackshit. certain errors or mistakes while exercising cause the leg cramps you get. not taking stupid vitamin which don't do anything isn't gonna cause leg cramps.

***** It isn't hard for people to make sure that they get the nutrients that they need, even if they can only eat for a short while when they are at work. Just takes proper planning. Same with mountain climbers. I had a friend that was a single mom of two kids, one has autism. Guess what, she was a nurse. She never had issues with making certain that she and her kids got the nutrients needed without vitamins. All because of proper planning. Her autistic child would sometimes mess up dinner plans and decide that they want something different, but quickly doing something for one is pretty easy; this was extremely rare as she figured out how they can work together on dinner by the time the autistic child was 9 and only that late as that is when they started developing communication skills. Just because you don't know how to plan you meals out, doesn't mean others don't and nor can it be done. But yes, using something to allow you to not do what you need to is perpetuating a problem. If needed, and only when needed (not because of being lazy) should one take supplements (like the body not able to take in or produce what it should). But that would be more like using a wheel chair because you don't have legs or they don't work, versus using a wheel chair when you are full of energy and there is nothing preventing you from walking.

Studies have shown that animal milk (cow dairy i.e.) pulls calcium from your bones and is harder to digest. Because most people stay away from sunlight they aren't getting enough vitamin D (which isn't a vitamin but a chemical) therefore not able to produce calcium.
@alexwells8643
@alexwells8643 7 лет назад
i cant say they are conclusive since ive only read a few studies, there are studies that show magnesium rich diets dont need large amounts of calcium. the magnesium aids in calcium and vit.d metabolism, the better the body can do that the more efficiently it used them. so we may actually need less calcium and vit.d than recommended. it was a gimmick decades ago that calcium is the biggest factor to strong bones. in reality, bones are made up of many vit. and minerals. the body can only handle so much. it then either gets rid of it or stores it.

VERY few people eat a balanced enough diet regularly enough to actually not be very low/deficient in various areas. Very few people get enough B12 in general but that is especially true for vegans/vegetarians and D3(or 2, it doesn't matter for most people) is something almost everyone is low on and getting it from the sun is almost always more dangerous and greatly increases your risks for skin cancer. This isn't so black and white like adam makes it out to be (which is not uncommon for him, but heck... it is more of a shock if you tell people that they're completely wrong than the most likely truth that they're actually just 40-60% wrong and that there's also a lot more complicated nuance that goes into it. The name truTV fits because they never tell you the real complete truth.

I've been a vegetarian for over 15 years & don't eat dairy. I've had blood tests and I've never been told I'm deficient in anything (even iron & B12). I never take supplements. I eat more food that is actual food than chips, processed food, etc. I don't carefully count my food nutrition. Did I mention that I hardly ever get colds or any other sick even? Maybe once every 2-3 years I get a bug. I've never had a flu shot. I'm 43. I'm surrounded by people who swear by vitamins, throw away their money on them, yet have a cold every other month. I hate the sun but I was not told I'm short on Vita D. If a DR. doesn't tell you you are deficient in something specific, don't take supplements. I mean a real live doctor, not the people who feel like giving advice on the internet.

+Nelson Montana No it doesn't. Giving your body more than what it needs causes problems. Too many calories, you get fat. Too much water, you get water intoxication. Too hot, you have a stroke. Too cold, you freeze. The same is true with vitamins. If you aren't getting something, that means your diet needs to be corrected. But if you are unable to get something, then you should take the *suppliment* as that is what they are. They aren't to be taken just because or in case. Too much vitamin C causes diarrhea (which can lead to dehydration and other malnutrition conditions as your body isn't able to properly digest), too much potassium causes muscle stiffness (and since you heart gets it first, and is a muscle, it will become harder and start to slow down and stop beating), and too much medication is the same like too much aspirin will cause sever ulcers (mostly in the stomach) that will have sever bleeding and cause internal bleeding to death (as once in your system, there is no way to get it out). In addition, if the body has what it needs, it doesn't preform better because you gave it more; that is saying if it isn't too much more. The body will do its best to discard the excess but will store a little bit just in case; but that is only a little bit. The only time you need to take supplements is if there is something that your body isn't getting or producing properly.

+OmniscientWarrior Not enough vitamin C can cause constipation. Not enough potassium can cause arrhythmia and a banana won't have enough potassium to correct, neither will OTC potassium - they only have 3% of your daily recommended amount. To get enough potassium to correct an arrhythmia by juicing kale daily, you would have to spend about $10 a day and drink ungodly amounts of juice which most people gulp down rather than sip throughout the day, missing the point of juicing entirely and not getting the nutrients the intended to get. People with chronic illnesses truly need vitamin supplementation regardless of their diet. And, many chronic illnesses are not caused by poor diet. Try getting bit by a tick.

+Aaron Luedemann Part of your statement I think you misworded and ended up giving an untrue statement. Vitamins do help with keeping the immune system up to par, but doesn't help when you get sick, just makes you less likely to get sick in the first place. However, if you are malnourished, then you aren't likely to get better either. And if you are already sick because you were malnourished, but then correct it, you are still going to be sick for just as long as you would have if you were never malnourished. Additionally, if you do get sick and you have the proper nourishment, then increasing the vitamins you take isn't going to help you at all. But as always is the case, take too much vitamins, you will develop other health problems that can cause you to be sick or sickly, or even die.

I was also the first kid in many years at BC children's hospital to have 100 percent cell death in my tumour. Kinda hard to say that's just a coincidence. Not to mention the Canadian government's website recommends vitamin d for a variety of cancers including breast cancer

Three things, a you were deficient and yes you should take supplements if you are diagnosed with a deficiency b do you really think you were the only kid at the children's hospital who took vitamin supplements and c it's not hard at all to say that was a coincidence, any number of things could've caused that outcome or it could have just been luck. This is a mass of strident over-simplification presented as if the case were closed. Judging by the certainty of tone, you'd think all research being led into the effects of vitamin and mineral supplementation might as well close up shop immediately. I understand that's part of the gambit of the show, but then if the rebuttal of common misconceptions offered is itself ultimately misleading, doesn't that defeat the point of this show in the first place? Research into vitamins, minerals, and nutrition is a constantly evolving field, with many studies contradicting others. There's much we still don't know, and new discoveries and recommendations are being made all the time. Anyone actually concerned with representing current thinking in this area would, I expect, advise a cautious open-mindedness.

This is often how argumentation works. People get sucked into the ethos of Adams new found authority, how ever that doesn't mean that everything he says is true... or at least it seems that he often nitpicks facts in his favor. The show would be no where near as successful if everything were "uncertain" or showed both sides of what Adam is trying to prove. When seeing things like this, I'd definitely agree it would be a good idea to do your own research to back up his facts, rather than simply taking his word for it. Unfortunately some people blindly follow everything Adam says... so in some ways he might be spreading more falsification than was originally intended by this show.

That being said, they are often used in areas that don't have enough food variety. Such as poor areas in nations such as China, Indonesia, and so forth. But if you have a deficiency, then that is what supplements are intended for.
