It's been a full year, crazy how time flies. I've spent almost 50 hours on this machine so it's time to talk about how it's held up and my overall impressions after 1 year of ownership and use.

Adam, you just said what I've been waiting to hear! Your aha moment. As a skydiver, this is what I want- flying without a plane or any motor idle. Peace and quiet. THANK YOU for confirming what I'm looking for in an e-motor. Right on! Now, help me answer one more question. Should I throw down now or wait for the solid state battery? Aghhhh 😵‍💫 😂 🪂

Thanks, Adam! You were spot on.👍 I have an X4 and an SP140 and love them both. I save my Tornado for cross country flights. That being said, I enjoy flying the electrics more....quiet and no vibration. With the X4, there is no torque.🙂 BTW: The net is Dyneema and is Super Strong. Thanks again for the video! Bill

What do you prefer sp140 vs x4?
@10661956
@10661956 Год назад
@@lisalehmann5772Difficult question. I think the 140 is an excellent design.....quiet, comfortable, powerful and almost no maintenance. Battery tech is getting better, so longer flight times and less battery weight are out there as time goes on. That being said, the X4 is compact and has no torque. Neither machine has any vibration. If the X4 would fly for 2 hours, I wouldn't fly anything else. It lives folded on the back seat of my car! Sorry for not giving you a straight answer. I'm really tired of dealing with gas units....although I do keep one for cross country flights. Usually, I am worn out after a 1-1/2 hour flight from noise and vibration. Bill

Importantly this unit is open sourced, so unlike all the other PPG products you can actually develop product improvements and submit them back upstream for incorporation.

Hi Adam. Frank in Ireland. PG for 15 years. I bought a air conception 130. The noise is a pain when you are used to paragliding. So this seems like the answer. Any fears of the battery going on fire. ? How much is the motor. What is the news on the solid state battery. How heavy is it. Thanks
@ooglek
@ooglek Год назад
The percentage display, or countdown timer, requires a shunt on the battery, and for the system to know how much power is being used at any given time, rather than basing it on voltage. Put a shunt in, and now you are able to know in realtime how much power is being consumed by the battery, and that will make the percentage left much more accurate.

Nice review Adam. I'm only 14 flights in and had to replace the battery connectors due to the resistor welding itself together. I had to drive home with the battery connected and cut off the battery leads once I arrived home. I've since gone to the Anderson connector which are more robust along with a AS150 anti-spark pigtail. Otherwise, I enjoy the SP for what it is and yes the frame definitely needs to be improved. So far my best flight time is 35 minutes average is 30 minutes but then again it's winter here in Vegas. Hopefully, warmer temps result in longer flight times. Keep it safe and see you in the air.

My concern would be the battery exploding. Ok on a scooter, not so ok at 3,000 feet. They should make a quick release for the battery in case it starts smoking or catches fire. Or is that being too paranoid?
@adam-newbloom
@adam-newbloom Год назад
Maybe a little paranoid... but I have had a lithium battery catch on fire before ( they basically Slow Burn internally). So a valid comment. That had to do with a charge controller issue however, non paramotor related. To be honest Im more concerned about a large tank of flammable fluid on my back than a battery... neither situation would be good if a fire started however :)
@ParaVids_andVinyls
@ParaVids_andVinyls Год назад
@@adam-newbloom True, both would be an awful situation, It's just the predictability with gas that has me more at ease. I grew up flying RC planes (still do) and have seen several swell up, smoke or blow up but your right, usually in connection with charging them. I'm new to ppg, and have everything but a motor so I'm exploring my options and naturally had to check out the electric side of things. Love the reliability and simplicity of electric. . There's a reason it over took the RC world, only a matter of time before most paramotors are electric. Especially being two stroke. I could see them being banned in the future by the climate fanatics. Hope I'm wrong though.

I can see the SP-140 as a great extra Paramotor for when you want to go out for a short rip around. The almost zero maintenance is a plus as well as the silence when off throttle. When it comes to flight time with the battery, the wing efficiency is the biggest factor probably. With the roadster I was lucky to get 35-40 minutes when the battery was new. With 16 hours on the battery now I can only get 25 minutes. I switched to a Kona 2 wing and I can only get 35 minutes. I sent my battery into Paul as I figured there had to be something wrong with it and he found nothing. Well. He did change a setting on the Bluetooth BMS and we will see if that helps but I doubt it. The swing arms definitely suck and I use iris arms and that is a huge improvement. The frame could definitely be improved. I take my hoop and prop off and on for every flight and even just doing that wears it down more and more as it just doesnt go together as easy as it should.
@adam-newbloom
@adam-newbloom Год назад
Do you fly in chill or sport? I fly in sport all the time so I figured that was part of the issue. That seems pretty low flight time. My spider 3 wasn't as efficient as my Driftair, but both were still in that 35-45min area.
@michaelbartlett1589
@michaelbartlett1589 Год назад
@@adam-newbloom ya Iv tried both sport and chill. Something has got to be wrong with the battery or something else causing my low flight time. Bc I was getting a lot better with the roadster and now I’m now. 16 hours is not enough to degrade the battery 20% in my opinion

@@benedictcumberbatch4275 I wouldn't put up with a sticky clunking twist throttle either mate. It can boil down to personal preference and application, I have hundreds of hours with right hand twist throttles off road with gassers and that is my perspective; the ebike twist throttles are too smooth (I run thumb throttles) and things like hitting bumps can cause you to change the throttle position in either direction causing wheel torque oscillations. Maybe the PPG application is a good fit for smooth light throttles. I run the off grid with a slide carb, it's smoother than a dirt bike for sure, since I run a Thor 202 foot launch there is the same problem with having so much thrust you may want some built-in attenuation with the throttle actuation adding a little friction.
