Adam Sandler Acting in a Serious Role is Heartbreaking

This is a scene from Reign Over Me (2007) with Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle. Adam's character is finally opening up to his friend about what happened to his family. I spliced it over some scenes from later on in the film for more dramatic effect. If you haven't watched this film, I highly recommend it, it's not all the time you see Adam Sandler in this form.
Edit: Thank you so much to the hundreds of people sharing their experiences in the comments with this movie. I've been on RU-vid for over 17 years and have never seen so much engagement with something I've made. Please subscribe to the channel and help me get to 1k so I can finally get the ball rolling. 😚

Never forget that Adam Sandler is an amazing actor and chose to do less serious films in order to support his friends by hiring them to work on his films. He traded a more fulfilling career for the opportunity to elevate the lives of his friends. Pretty good trade if you ask me.

I’ve never heard him say it but I would bet Chris Farley’s death dot that tbh. He lost one of his best friends amidst the prime of both there lives and because of it took pains to make sure none of the rest of his friends would ever want, and where always close if they needed him for anything. The symbolism of him locking himself away to play Shadow of the Colossus, a game in which the main character goes to slay giants in order to bring his loved one back from the dead, that always stuck out to me and made me sad that non gamers wouldnt typically catch that little bit of detail.

With the friends, with people, that’s how depression and anguish and pain are shown. I’m an emotional person, God has blessed me with the ability to feel, to empathize with others and that has made me more emotional that most boys my age. And like all people I have problems, in my life, it seems like no matter what I do, what I accomplish, how strong my relationship is with God I’m just let at the end of the day unhappy and unfulfilled. I’ve seen things and experienced things that most 16 year olds haven’t, and I felt so horrible about certain stuff I decided to change personality and how I treat people entirely. I try to make people laugh, I’m always there for my friends, I wish some people would check in on me so I make sure to do that for my friends. My point is, as this usually happy and energetic person that tries to be in a good mood and treat people well, it seeps in from time to time and I just break. Emotions suck

There's also that basketball movie he did, Hustle. He has a surprisingly big range of acting skill. I mean--I always knew it, but it's just a big contrast from the comedies he always does and is known for. It's the same with Jim Carrey. They're almost type-cast in comedic, goofy characters until they aren't, and they go hard.

Good comedians contain a darkness that always threatens to overtake them...render them incapable of the comedy itself, but giving them that particular kind of insight. Sandler is just another proof of that.
