Kayte and Mel introduce Adam to their first project they completed as MKULTRA--their design and fabrication studio. This animatronic was the star of the short film "Neon Vowels", and building this robot to operate on set was no easy feat. Kayte and Mel walk Adam through their build show us what it took to make this character!

Wow, imagine having Adam as a resource that you can hit up and ask “dude, what the hell did I just get myself into”. That stuff seems to genuinely never annoy Adam, he really seems like the type that just wants to help. I wish more folks, especially in tech, had that attribute.

I think that's the direction we're moving in. I hope so anyway. More people these days seem to be understanding and appreciating the benefits of working collaboratively.

This is suuuuch a good Tested video - you guys have Adam doing an interview, you have Mel and Kayte, (love these two!!) You have short cut-in scenes of the film under discussion, as well as bits from the Behind the Scenes for the film under discussion... This is 100% top-tier "movie prop industry" content, I am SO SO grateful to be able to see this!!

I love Mel’s attitude, I always thought she had a crazy future in movie robotics etc. crazy to see she had done it. Kate is also amazing in her detail and paint abilities, that skyship she built for blade runner, I think, was killer.

It's a beautiful machine, the head and breadmaker "torso" really speak volumes. I won't know how arm reads in motion till I see the finished product, but the clips make it seem like it will work well to give it "life". The "face" is my favorite part, both for the nostalgic Johnny 5 box shape but how the asymmetry is made so it doesn't detract from the "functional" aesthetic and yet still reads perfectly as a sympathetic face.

I have an inadvertent sad now. I was watching this and had the thought of "they're so lucky to have Adam as a friend/colleague to ask for advice". But then I had the additional thought that Grant would be so much better. 😢 Amazing video though and I'm super excited to see what MK does in the future!!

As you might guess from the droid in my profile pic, this sort of thing is right up my alley. The first day on set will likely sound like a familiar experience to droid builders that have taken their droid to a convention for the first time (or more accurately, each time they take them.) You start learning to prepare for it by bringing as many spare parts, fasteners, tools, and/or wiring diagrams as physically possible. And accepting that (almost inevitably) the failure will be something else out of left field. The point of the preparation is to reduce the number of things you weren't prepared for, shrinking left field out of existence. Most of my droids have gone through the "well, I wasn't expecting THAT to be an issue" or the "weird, it worked at home" situation, many more than once. Which is why it also pays to be helpful to other builders and attendees; you never know who might have/be able to make anything you forgot or didn't think of. It could make the difference between a brief repair session and having to leave the droid in the hotel for the rest of a major event like Dragon Con.

Weird offtopic question.... Was Kayte's mic faulty, or picking up RFI from the remote control, or in closer proximity to something in an adjacent room that her mic was picking up? 🥴 There's just a noticeable strange sound, like a whiny-droning, in the background of her dialogs. It's _slightly_ detectable with Mel's _(I have to put my ear to my speaker though),_ but not evident to me in Adam's.
@r38007
@r38007 8 месяцев назад
Ok, that wasn't just me hearing things. Yeah it almost sounded like servo or stepper motor chatter to me. I bet you it was picking up that or some other electronic feed back from the bot

What's really great about all of the problems Mel and Kayte encountered and were able to solve throughout the project, especially the ones that happened on set; Is that those are things that the titular members of the production are going to remember, they'll think about those moments when other people in the industry solicit them with a, 'hey, I'm workin' on this thing.. I'm wanting to do this sorta.. you know anyone that could handle that kinda thing?' and they'll say, 'Yeah, actually I do. Are you familiar with MKULTRA? Ha! no not the Governments personal psychotropic pharmacy.No, MKULTRA Industries, They fabricate designs that will blow/bend/warp your mind.
