Adam Savage's Favorite Tools: Fabric Steamer (and a New Hat!)

Rolling Garment Steamer: amzn.to/3oo9xBU
Portable Fabric Steamer: amzn.to/3hMx2U3
Adam tries on a new hat he just bought, and in the process shows how he can make use of a garment steamer and wooden hat stretcher to make this new fedora fit better. For cosplayers and costumers, a good garment steamer is an essential piece of equipment, and portable fabric steamers like ones you find in hotel rooms are oftentimes preferred over irons!

I saw this thing about how berets are made and it's amazing, it was one of those How Its Made vids, I think. They knit the round hat and then they beat it up and wash it and shrink it, and then it becomes felt! All tightly woven and bound together. I had no idea that's how felt worked.

The reason stem works so well to help shape the fibers is two-fold: The organic molecules in that make up the fur are basically a polymer which softens with heat allowing plastic deformation. As the material heats up, there's more energy available to overcome the inter-molecular forces between long chain molecules which allows them to re-arrange. The water is also important, as it acts sort of like a lubricant between long chain molecules (commonly referred to as a plasticizer). Nylon in particular has a strong affinity for water, and when it absorbs too much water, it becomes weaker. The water gets between the chains, and again weakens the inter-molecular forces holding the polymer together.

Another great alternative to a fabric steamer is using a kettle. I have a few cowboy hats I wear and I use kettles to soften the felt to shape the brims and crown. It's a little more difficult because you're moving the hat around the steam instead of the steam around the hat, but it still works well and I'm sure more people have tea kettles lying around than fabric steamers.

Every bit of advice I've gotten with boots was to wear them in the shower, walk around a bit, and then take them off and roll them as tight as you could and then let them dry out. I've never heard of people using rice cookers. I don't know that I've even seen a rice cooker big enough to hold a shoe.
@b0z0dcl0wn
@b0z0dcl0wn 3 года назад
@@jimadiah This was at REI about 20 years or so ago. Specifically for old school non goretex lined boots, gore does not stretch. These days I wouldn't recommend a boot that doesn't fit, but back then you didn't have the hundreds of options you do today. Also alot of people were their boots too small, there should be a fingers width (two for plastics) in front of those toes. Heat and elevation cause swelling, so always account for that. I'd also rather have heel blisters, than no toenails. Heel blisters are pretty easy to mitigate, but if your boots too small you can't do anything to fix it.

I watched a milliner recently state that the size of a hat will differ depending on the country the hat was made as each country has their own idea of hat size. Also, you can only stretch a hat about a half an inch. Anymore than that, it would be better to size up. The milliner is Evercrumbly & Witch for those who want to know. I'm thinking this hat may have shrunk a bit due to age.

@@sethcarson5212 I should have said tea kettle. I usually just call it a kettle, but my mind went to water kettle for some reason. Some people call it a teapot, but that is a separate thing. I know far less people who own pressure cookers, though I know the instant pot has made them more common place. I would assume more people have kettles than do pressure cookers because kettles are small and you can get them for less than $10 at walmart. If you are really in a pinch, you could. But I wouldn't recommend it. They don't put out a lot of steam and they are clunky to move around the hat. The only draw back is that you're moving the hat around the steam and not the other way around.
