Adam Savage's Favorite Tools: Folding Rulers!

One of the best places to find beautiful vintage tools is at antique malls, and Adam shares some of his favorite tools he's picked up from his travels. One such tool is an elegant folding ruler--the kind that craftspeople used to carry around all the time. That classic design is renewed with a gorgeous folding ruler from Makers Cabinet, called the Stria. Adam checks out the steel and brass versions of the Stria, as well as the updated Iris drawing compass that improves on its unique design. Thanks to Makers Cabinet for sending these lovely tools to add to Adam's shop collection!

When and if you try making your own? Add a rotating square section to the hinge so to be able to cut straight corners without having to lift the work peice when cutting squares!.. @Adam Savage’s Tested I imagine using the iris tool, and I’m already missing a crucial feature: A circumferential scale on the lower ring, that is divided into 360 degrees. This will not only enable you to measure or create angles, it will also show you if you have placed the iris centered on a line. The tool would be SO MUCH more useful with it.

My co-workers father passed away a few years back and stored his dad's stuff at work for a while. He was a carpenter in NYC in the 40's. We were digging through the pile and he had hand saws, rulers, hand planes and a real awesome hand made tool box and some other goodies. My co-worker told me to take them if I will use them. I restored everything and use them regularly :)

My son who lives in Taiwan started collecting antique English hand tools, because he is teaching himself with Paul Sellers on RU-vid to do capentry. Adam, great to see you received the tools and we are so happy you are enjoying them! We did indeed use some beautiful old rulers for reference when sketching out our design and had a lot of fun along the way weaving our unique Makers Cabinet style into it. We love taking our community’s suggestions into our design process, and it's awesome to see your new Iris is easier to handle. The added stiction from the engraving certainly makes a difference, so thanks for your initial insight. Warm regards from the Makers Cabinet Team. P.S. If Adam (or anyone reading this) should ever find themselves in midcoast Maine, A trip to Liberty Tool in Liberty Maine is a must. He would be in paradise. 😃 I *love* these rulers and have a bunch from the mid and late '80s when I was hitting swap meets, estate sales, and yard sales with regularity. My favorite of these folding rulers is a tiny one that opens to twelve inches. It is small and as clean as the day someone bought it from a retailer. I love the warm wood and brass tones of them. 😏 Even though I enjoy my "perfect" 12" - I also enjoy ones that have obviously been daily users, one that look as if they've bounced around in a tool box all their lives. Every dent and scratch gives evidence that they were used to *build* *things.* I also have several wonderful wooden tool boxes to go along with the wood and brass rulers. I enjoy collecting old woodworking tools, and tools that have wooden handles. 😊 Ohhh, I love my old tools... My dad was a carpenter, 30 years in a union that treated him well. I got a scholarship from them when I went to college. Now my dad wasn't old enough to have used tools like the ones I collected, but I am pretty sure his father used them. I love my family connection to crafting. 💕

One of the tools my grandpa finally broke a few year back was a circle drawer of over 150 years old. The fantastic thing about it was that it was very precise yet super simple. It was basically a triangle with 2 ropes to a base. But the ropes ad small knots in them and the triangle had small nudges where you could put the knots behind. with the spacings of the knots and nudges he could make near perfect circles in 4 mm increments like how a calliper works.

My grandfather had several of those. Sadly I lost track of them years ago when my parents died.

I have a carpenter's profile copying scribe that was my father's, it's about 30cm long, has a tiny wheel to run along the surface I am copying and a scribe pin in a slot I can set anywhere along it's length, or it will take a 2mm pencil lead instead of the pin. My father worked in construction all his life starting in the '30s, he had never seen one like this before and bought it from a antique dealer. I still use it.

I believe the wood and brass ones for decorating but I love the local market on antique day because there's always like 5 stalls of just tools and the odd few dotted around the rest and you can find a pretty clean old plane for £12-£20 depending on the length

Of course he loves folding rulers. His left arm IS a folding ruler...

My favourite tools to collect are: Specialty pliers, tiny drill bit's and drivers for them (the absolutely tiny chucks are my favourite pieces of engineering), and one of my most used tools are specialty torches. I love the chef torches for a number of reasons and I use them almost every day around electronics (focus heating precisely something, shrink tubing, etc) and around 3d printing. I also use it for opening stuff and what not. Adam if you read this get a chef torch, I am 100% sure you will find good use for it! Och and one thing worth mentioning that I do not have at home but wish: cable tying machine. These are used for quickly tightening zipties and automatically cutting the end. They have a number of variants and setting but boy do we use them at work. It would be extremely useful for prototyping and I am sure it would also be nice for cosplay applications :)

Nice!! This is called a duimstok in Dutch, thumb stick
@knalletorget

In Swedish it's "tumstock". Can also be translated to thumbstick/thumb-log.

Probably because we “on the continent” used to measure stuff in thumbs (which is just inches). On thicker “duimstokken” the inches are still printed on the side.

We use folding rulers all the time in Scandinavia. At least here in the Faroes folding rulers (2 meters) are more common than tape measures

Taiwan has them in like every stationary store, in every size or color imaginable. I’m pretty sure I’ve even seen a hello kitty foldable ruler sometime lol.

I love my Midori folding ruler which is maybe more suited for office work than workshop. The aluminium one is very well machined and the hinge is very precise. Alas they are not elementary school student proof as my kids have managed to twist theirs, they still work though. They are about 15-20€ so not too expensive.

My non-folding ruler also has angle-finding capabilities built into it. It is perfect at detecting a 180 degree angle!
