Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Cosmonaut Model Kit

In this episode of One Day Builds, Adam spends a day at the shop assembling and painting a beautiful 1/6th scale garage kit, based on the fantastical characters of artist Derek Stenning. Adam and Norm each work on their own kit, and Adam teaches us some painting and weathering techniques to bring out the intricate details on this sci-fi cosmonaut figure.

Keith Ward Who cares about TV series these days anyway?! Television is dying, and that rather quickly. The Internet, especially RU-vid, has already replaced most of the television market and that trend will continue to replace television entirely. RU-vid, or whatever will replace it in the future, is your best bet.

Thank you so much for doing this! (made an otherwise miserable week end pretty amazingly!) I started, own, and manage Industria Mechanika (literally out of my garage) so really appreciate the publicity and the love for our releases since as a garage kit company, we don't have any advertising budget. (we also pay the artists half of our profits to make it fair to them... every artist deserves to be paid for their work.) If you ever want to chat and find out more about how I do all of these releases and started this, Charles knows how to get in touch with me. I'd love to talk shop! Thanks!!! --Michael Fichtenmayer (FichtenFoo)

Well... I would fear that it's like going to a fancy restaurant and enjoying a fine meal in a beautiful dining room... then visiting the kitchen and seeing it's a grummy oil-barrel fire with a shopping cart for a cook surface under a bridge manned by dirty trolls. It's really not much to see... it's a garage with all of my supplies and tools where I design the packaging and instructions, sculpt/design some of the kits, do my shipping, etc., and a small crammed corner of the basement used as my stock area. I package kits on my living room floor while watching TV because that's the only space large enough for me to do that... sometimes on the kitchen floor, and sometimes I get my girls (8 and 11) to help... It's really a cottage industry, nothing fancy. I feel like a skype chat would be time better spent than the effort required to visit some random guys crammed garage on the other side of the country. haha! But hey.... if they ever wanted to visit Pittsburgh and destroy the illusion (which I doubt they have anyway... we all have our personal crammed hobby spaces full of "junk" that others wouldn't understand) I'd be up for it.

This is the perfect format for a masterclass... you have Adam, the experienced master and Norm, the eager learner and doer. It's a fascinating interaction to watch. Adam is an excellent teacher. Edit: Norm, I was pleasantly surprised by how your model turned out. I wasn't sure how it would work but I think you did an amazing job and I actually prefer your take on it to Adam's go at realism. Great work!

What Adam meant by mixing paint with thinner to a consistency of milk. Pour a cup of milk into a clear glass cup. Then swish it around like wine. You will note the milk will coat the glass and you swish it round. That's what you are looking for in the paint. You will note you see Adam repeatedly swish his paint around in his cups. This is what he's looking for.

Other ways to hide LEDs in plain sight and at lack of room need to be kept in mind. It's possible to use car window heater repair fluid (silver-based, cost about 5€) to draw invisible electric connections on the model surface prior to priming and painting. You can't solder to it, but you can CA glue SMD LEDs down, and then use more of the silver fluid to make electric connections, both from LED to the painted conductor, and from wires to the painted conductor. Silver fluid is finicky to work with, you need to shake and mix it all the time. Sometimes, it separates and electric connection disappears once it's fully dry. So don't forget to keep your multimeter in diode/continuity mode and check every step of the way.

I hate to admit that I have watched this episode more than once. I really enjoy the way Norm does almost nothing that Jamie tries to teach him. I guess he was nervous, who wouldn't be a little nervous learning from such an amazing guy?

+Jeff Niezgoda I mean if you're going to judge someone, at least learn the insult properly. It's condescending. I agree to the extent that he doesn't have the personality like Adam. I don't necessarily WANT to watch him. But I do want to watch Adam. Adam has a way with the camera that invites you. Norm is at least a step above beginner where he'll attempt to ask Adam questions the viewers may be wondering.

Adam bro, you should wear a gas mask when working with all that lacquer. Beautiful model and interesting choice of color. Personally i would throw a flat coat over the fabrics and dry brush metallic on the metal parts so that it would contrast with the glossy leather boots and helmet.

Yes! Finally somebody that knows how to use spray paint! I don't think I have ever seen someone use spray paint properly. Short quick 'bursts' not hold and hose it! Something I figured out before I was even a teen. But seeing just all the little things that a model could use, or maybe 'need', from start to finish is really informative. I have to admit I haven't made a model in over 25 years,, but this makes me kind of want to try it again.

aDotFromTheFuture To be fair, Soviets were not about building things delicately. Compare their rockets to ours. Big, bulky, utilitarian. That being said, I realize this is not what actual cosmonauts wore, but this figure is based off of a particular artist, and is accurate for that. Similarly, the idea of having fins on a spaceship is completely ludicrous, but look at all the spaceships from that era that were made with fins. This is art. :)

Love these videos. I do wonder about not using masks or a paint booth.
@TheRunesmythe
@TheRunesmythe 9 лет назад
Adam's workshop looks its pretty wide open and - I would guess - well ventilated due to the fact that he works with a lot of materials that shouldn't be inhaled or ingested, which I would guess explains the lack of masks and a spray booth. Though you're not alone in wondering about that, as I had very similar thoughts, especially when Adam was spraying pure lacquer thinner through the airbrush. I could already feel the ghost of a headache setting in just watching that stuff aerosolize.
@TheRunesmythe
@TheRunesmythe 9 лет назад
An airbrush contains whatever type of paint is put into the feeder cup. In this case, it was lacquer based paints, which are certainly not non-toxic.

Doan08 Ventilation would prevent a build up of fumes and paint particles in the air, but it wouldn't prevent them breathing them as they sprayed. Ultimately it's their choice and they don't need to answer to me for that. I'm not in the room.

adam truly is fantastic, i was going to comment on how the paint was peeling and the yellow wasn't particularly great, but it is the hardest colour to paint by far. He ended up pointing that out later on, a suggestion is games workshop although expensive does have some amazing oils and washes. love these series and this channel, 2 amazing models/modelers doing something different and touching on two of humanities all time greatest wonders, space and art. 10/10
