Adam Savage's Spy Prop Kit!

One of Adam's favorite movie MacGuffins is the secret agent go-bag, containing all the documentation and ephemera a spy would need to travel the world or make a quick escape. Returning to the legendary Earl Hays Press, Adam challenges their propmakers to create a go-bag equivalent for a 1940's era fictional spy! He's blown away by what designer Kim Berens and propmaker Michael Corrie ‪@PropsToHistory‬ make: not just a comprehensive collection of accurate props but a complete identity and story for Adam to inhabit.
Thanks so much to designer Kim Berens at Earl Hays and Michael Corrie ‪@PropsToHistory‬ making this prop kit!

Adam should machine / make a punch for voiding out the passport. That'd add a lot of authenticity and it'd be a fun one day build. Maybe make two, one for Adam, one for Earl Hays.

Love this bit about 'A gentleman not reading another gentleman's mail.' It took a while for some of those attitudes to change. I remember reading 'Spycatcher' by Peter Wright, a former MI5 officer about his time and what he got up to. He wrote about one time planning to get into the embassy of a foreign country to bug it. They had the whole plan in place and ready to go and he suggested using, I think it was German wiring and electronics for the listening devices (been 20+ years since I read it) so that if/when the devices were discovered they would possibly blame another country other than Great Britain. He was shut down and admonished with that classic English reprimand, "Dear boy, that's just not cricket."

Thanks to Earl Hays, I now own a Blade Runner ID badge and an "Outatime" license plate. Thank you so much! I've bought plenty of prop replicas in the past, but there's no prop replica like one made by the same people and using the same process as the screen-used originals.

This HAS to be made into a production now - you’re so far down the road of detail and storytelling already! After watching that character’s world being created through the props and required backstory, we’re now invested enough that it’s hard to imagine it NOT being brought to life - from the standpoint of respect for history if nothing else. Please and thank you! Also how incredibly generous for them to do all that work and then donate the result - wow!

This video reminds me so much of Operation Mincemeat, in which MI5 created a person out of thin air (complete with body) in order to disguise the invasion of Sicily. It's an absolutely wild tale that even includes Ian Fleming (the author of the James Bond books). The whole video I was seeing Adam in a British war room making props that had to be good enough to hide an entire invasion for as long as possible. Great video!

At 14:30 it is stated that Charles de Gaulle signed the letters of transit. This is a common mistake made by people about the movie. Peter Lorre as Ugarte actually says, "signed by General Weygand," and Lorre's accent makes it sound like de Gaulle. Charles de Gaulle would have had no authority to sign such a thing. (If letters of transit actually existed)

@Adam Savage. I don't know if you'll actually read this, but I hope you do. For a long time, I've wanted to start collecting World War II militaria. It's always been one of those things "I'll get to". This video inspired me to not only start collecting but to take it a step further. I'm currently working on a project wherein I'm creating an entire identity for both an American World War II soldier and a French Resistance fighter. I'm following your lead by gathering or making all of the documents and ephemera that would belong to these characters. So far, I've collected a period-accurate checkbook, a period-accurate driver's license, ration coupon books, a period-accurate stationery set, and a period-accurate wallet. I've also collected a bunch of the militaria I need for my soldier's dress uniform and combat uniform. It's such a fun project to work on, so thank you for inspiring me. Once I'm farther along, I'd love to send you photos of my work if you'd be interested. Thank you again.

Every time I watch one from this series I think "this one's my favorite!" But THIS ONE is my favorite. I was giggling with excitement the whole way and nearly in tears at the end. THANK YOU, Adam, Michael, and Kim, for this completely mindblowing history lesson on so many historical levels. ... I hesitated to say anything because it's all so perfect... 🫣 but 35:41 was a "nooooo!!" moment because poor Michael accidentally switched the "Nom" and "Prenoms". "Prenoms" means "first/given name(s)"... It's correct in the Casablanca version at 23:33. I'm completely emotionally invested and so a bit heartbroken for Michael. Time for version 2.0! I'll be here for it! 😍

I come from Gdańsk, Poland, the city where in 1939 World War II began. Interestingly, I've noticed that the first stamp pasted on the original passport used in the movie Casablanca features the emblem of the Free City of Gdańsk. This can adds an extra layer of meaning to the entire spy narrative.

I love how you mentioned that movies are not usually just the director's vision and that "it takes a village", as you say. It makes me feel like Adam and Matthew Mercer would get on super well, he mentioned in a video titled "Game Masters of Exandria Roundtable" that he hates the "artur" idea of storytelling and the idea that a single person lords over a fictional canon, and instead he prefers a more collaborative approach and you talking about it, Adam, in a film context really reminded me of that moment from that video.
