Adam geeks out over a new Japanese model kit of a walking biped machine based on artist Theo Jansen's Strandbeest creations. In building the kit, Adam explains his organization skills and the challenge of deciphering building instructions in a language he can't read.

Strandbeests are seriously someof the most awesome things I've ever seen. They move so smoothly, and completely on their own. I especially like how Theo just made his own leg system, and invented air-pressure powered sensors, just to make his strandbeests work perfectly. I really love such incredible creativity and genius.

I live in the Netherlands. I met Theo Jansen, and attended one of his lectures about the strandbeesten. A friend and I were very inspirated by him so we bought his book and we build our own strandbeest out of pvc pipes. Just like Theo Jansen does. It took us about every weekend for 2 months to make it, but it works and walks all by itself.

These kits are one of the best things about living in Japan. I love the subscription ones that are partial kits every month for larger projects. The amount of information they come with is incredible for a "model". Definitely worth learning how to read a little if you plan on getting these.

'lego is never wrong'.... every single time i put together a set, there is always one piece 'missing' and i say to myself 'this time its missing for sure', and then bam, there it is, under a page in the manual or something like that. 20 years of playing with lego, and they have never been wrong.

YES!!! I was in Chicago this spring and wandered into the Chicago Cultural Center (a hidden gem) and found an exhibit of Jansen's original Strandbeests! I even got to pull one across the floor...under supervision, of course. I'd seen videos of the Stranbeests before and was fascinated by them, but it was an entirely different - and overwhelming - experience to actually move with the genuine, Theo Jansen constructed Beests. WOW! I believe they're now on display in San Francisco's Exploratorium. If you can go see these Beests, DO IT!

I have one of the ones with the fan. Can be had for about $15 on ebay. I ordered another when I found out each six legged section is identical, with no right or left side. This means you can attach more to your original model, making it as long as you like. Although, this means the wind power will be less effective. But still, extra long strandbeest GO.

Not sure if this idea is any good, but it would be a cool project to build a display case for one of these so it could be on a shelf but still operate. I'm thinking a fan and a treadmill that are set to go at the right speed for the strandbeest - gearing it correctly would be the challenge in my mind. Possible 1-day build?
@MasterMayhem78
@MasterMayhem78 8 лет назад
I would think as long as the 'feet' don't touch the shelf surface (supported a couple millimeters above it) with an installed fan, these things could walk forever. *until the fan is turned off anyway.
@dummkompf
@dummkompf 8 лет назад
I'm thinking you could flip the fan blades around so they're facing the opposite direction, and then it would walk in the same direction as the wind instead of walking against it.... you sure you didn't install those backwards?

I think it's way more interesting that it walks against the wind, as it has to overcome the power of the wind. Maybe accidentally it's right in the spirit of us Dutch folks, as it's always kind of windy here, so there is a lot of walking and bicycling against the wind. I think this strandbeest tribute is perfect.

I totally forgo the knolling whenever I build with LEGO. I don’t know what it is but I’ve always built from dumping the bags into piles, and the searching for pieces in the messy piles I’ve made just brings me back to my childhood. I keep it messy to keep building like a kid and I find the search fun plus it makes the build go slower.

Theo even says in a TED talk that he's created a simple "brain" which is basically a step counter for where the water is and where the beach is. There's a hose that is normally sucking in air and is located near the ground. When it gets close to the water as it's walking, it sucks in water. The resistance of the water in the suction triggers a valve to open or close, and causes the sculpture to reverse in the opposite direction to safety lol. Brilliant!

One of the best developments in Lego kits, since I was a kid, is that they now separate the parts into numbered bags for larger kits. Each bag has all the parts you need to build one sub-section of the finished model, and they're numbered in the sequence you should build them.

I subbed when Adam built the box for his blaster and I have to say I've enjoyed a lot of content since then. This was another really awesome video and I really enjoyed it. I honestly wish it was longer, and though I like watching fabrication form square one much more then this, I still really liked this. I'd like to request more fabrication like the blaster box, but I know the time that goes into that. Great work, and I can't wait to see more.

Man, the "figuring out diagrammatic instructions without being able to read the Japanese text" thing sure resonated as someone who was obsessed with origami as a kid...

Cool build, I actually just built a strandbeest out of maple and walnut in my home shop. I built everything except the driveshaft which was made by small wonder toys. My first goal was to get it walking, which I did in a video I posted on my channel. Next step is to make it wind power in the spirit of Theo Jansens beests! Thanks again for this cool video. I love seeing Jansens ideas getting more attention, a genius in his own right.
