@@dreamcage1801San Diego already failed in NBA Clippers had horrible attendance. While technically they could put a team in San Diego I don’t see it as a viable city. Foot me once…. Same reason why I don’t think they go back to Canada to expand either. They will look at U.S cities first.
@@scotttild dirty ownership’s for starters and weren’t winning enough games second. St. Louis may get a shot of an NBA team. Gotta agree with you on the Canada not expanding because of the money.
St. Louis needs the NBA, or the NFL. I went to the battlehawks game Sunday and that crowd is electric. Louder than the NFL and college football games I’ve been to.
Gotta ask because I’m from okc. What’s the overall opinion Seattle people have on the thunder? Did they follow the team generally or does nobody up there like them. Genuinely curious because I’ve heard multiple things.
@williamcallawaydavis8845 I actually kinda like them! They're in my top 5 favorite NBA teams. I understand pro sports are a business for the owners. That's how they make their money. But, for us common fans with no financial investment, it's different. So, some love to ya'll out there in OKC!
@Renardmorocco Correct, those two cities would be the b one to move. I actually like this for the Pelicans. They would have been 3rd seed probably with last year record of they would have been on the East.
Think anyone can find “a” report of metro area populations that shows Cleveland larger than Pitt in metro areas. I haven’t found one. Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and even Columbus now have metro areas larger than Cleveland’s. This is as reported by the entities that are mostly accepted as official reporters of this.
Btw, the murder rate in Mexcio City is surpassed by 170 US cities of which 23 of those have nba teams. As for altitude not an issue... I have been there 4 times... Not an issue for athletes if I don't have an issue with it.
Someone brought up a point about the conferences. Will Las Vegas be playing in the East? Or will they add Kansas City and a 4th team that is at least arguably east? Cause you think both Seattle and Vegas are west teams.
@commodorezero BOTH Las Vegas and Seattle would be put in the West. The Minnesota Timberwolves would likely be moved East. The realignment would probably be like this: EAST 1: BOS, BKN, NYK, PHI EAST 2: CLE, DET, TOR, WSH EAST 3: ATL, CHA, MIA, ORL EAST 4: CHI, IND, MIL, MIN WEST 1: HOU, MEM, NOP, SAS WEST 2: DAL, DEN, OKC, UTA WEST 3: LVS, LAC, LAC, PHX WEST 4: GSW, POR, SAC, SEA
Seattle and Vegas are pretty much a done deal at this point, this is about figuring out the next best cities after those two cities get their teams. I would love to see Montreal and Vancouver get into the mix. Toronto could use a Canadian rivalry in the Eastern Conference with Montreal. Vancouver could be the Western Conference version of the Raptors and have a geographical rivalry with nearby Seattle, Portland, and Denver.
I agree back in the late 90s, it was too soon, but these days, especially with the expansion of basketball throughout Canada, Vancouver would be very good.
I think it is gonna be Seattle and Vegas as it’s been reported this whole time Mexico City would be interesting, because I wonder how California basketball fans who are from Mexico would feel. They might end up as many people’s second team around here, and some may even flock to them. But then again idk.
Sacramento was the last team close to relocation. They are now killing it with the Golden 1 center and their fan base is as invested as they probably have ever been. It certainly doesn’t feel like any other team is remotely close to relocating so Vegas and Seattle will be the last cities to get NBA teams for a while most likely. I do think that talent needs to be more spread out across the NBA right now and under the new CBA so it will be exciting once this expansion season actually happens.
It feels like 36 is probably the true final number not 32. Meaning there would in theory be 4 more slots after Seattle/Vegas. I don't think they'll use them all at once but I think they might go for 4 of them.
@@dreamcage1801 nah that’s like 6 years away. A literal 0% chance of 36 by then. I’d bet my life on it. Stadiums aren’t built that fast and you have to make sure that you have enough talent when expanding. Owners will vote no if too many of thier players are getting taken during the expansion drafts. At minimum it’ll be mid to late 2030s to get to 34. Probably longer. Last expansion was in 2004. 20 years ago. It’ll take a lot of time.
@@sawyertuide7636 not true Montreal is big multicultural city with more nba player from there than Vancouver + back in the day NFL tried to expand to Montreal
Montréal forget it, in Montreal if you don’t speak French you can be white, but if you don’t speak French they would look at you as if you were from symbawe, and Montreal they don’t like English speaking people, they have a law called. Needles to say the US are talking about to put sanctions because of the French language, for get Quebec here is more unreliable than Mexico believe and the Canadian economy is horrible
@@sawyertuide7636 With Quebec City, I am not sure they would be allowed to enter MLS or even the USL since Canada has its own pro men's soccer league right now with the CPL as politics might get in the way. I know Quebec City has been trying to get a CPL team, but the problem remains trying to get a stadium suitable enough to host a CPL team. However, I do agree with you on the other points you have made and would add that Quebec City would be able to support a PWHL team.
@@91_C4_FLWould never work, the CFL is far below the NFL in attendance, facilities and budget. It would have to be a new team in some big city rest just could not support a full NFL team. There are lots of issues with sports teams in Canada that people don’t understand. It is very hard for pro teams in Canada to be successful. NFL might work in Canada but you would need a brand new team with a wealthy owner and new place to play.
Benson has said that she will not move either team from the city and that she will sign a long term lease with the state once both stadium issues are finalized this summer or fall.
This is a horrible idea! Klutch Sports and LeBron has ruined the league with their BS. Adam Silver needs to flush Klutch Sport and its malign influence out of the NBA and mainstream sports media. Get the damn ratings for the games back up to early 2000s numbers. Make the game more watchable.
I like the idea of moving New Orleans to Mexico City, however that would create an uneven balance between the conferences. Let’s move Memphis to the Eastern conference, the western conference would have seventeen teams compared to fifteen in the eastern conference. So the league would have to be okay with having unbalanced conferences, or would have to move either Houston, Dallas, or OKC to the East
You do realize that New Orleans in already in the Western Conference, right? Even if New Orleans were to move to Mexico City (which isn't happening), they're not switching conferences with any move.
montreal would be amazing because they would be rivals to boston, toronto new york, and philly, and likely have a huge european fan base but i honestly doubt it will ever happen.
I really don’t think people understand how hard it is for Canada teams to make a profit or survive. Raptors have a very hard time being relevant, they are never on TV because of Canada national policies. There are also other reasons why the NBA will not expand to either Canada or Mexico. Exchange rates also make it very difficult for teams outside the U.S to be profitable and meaningful,
@@retrowarehouse2554Yes they have been around and so have the Blue Jays reason is that is the biggest city in Canada but that does not negate the fact that both those teams struggle. Raptors are never on TV during the season as the home team due to Canada TV rules. Blue Jay are hardly ever relevant. There is also the issue of taxes which people don’t get either, players don’t really want to go to Canada to play for a number of reasons. I am not saying they can’t expand to Canada just that it is not very likely and very hard to put another team in Vancouver especially since one has failed already. Finally the currency exchange really hurts the profit of Canada teams. Players are paid in U.S Dollars but earn money in Canada Dollars teams have to absorb what ever the exchange rate is. One of the reasons why Vancouver failed and the Expos failed.
The NFL and NBA keep skipping over my city of St Louis. The fanbase really support their teams. Just look at what happened with the BattleHawks of the UFL. Attendance records were being broken every week. We need SOMETHING
@@dreamcage1801 St. Louis would be a fine market for an NFL team. It has a lot of biased, ridiculous arguments against it of "they lost two teams", without thinking that it had nothing to do with fan support. The same arguments they say about Atlanta with the NHL.
As lame as it sounds, it is still better than the KFC, Little Ceasers and Smoothy King arenas. Some of these corporate names are ridiculous. Plus, the second largest company in the world, Amazon, is the one paying for that name so good luck changing it.
It’s an absurd globalists name, building a huge building with a huge carbon footprint and calling it climate pledge. Like the Sphere in Vegas telling everyone to reduce their carbon and we have wrecked the planet.
Your comment is true perhaps for some top tier American players... but NBA is more international every season. Also, you'd be surprised how many Americans currently play in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional for Mexican teams and they do it not NOT MAKING ANYWHERE CLOSE TO NBA TYPE MONEY.
@malcorub I mean I'm not saying players wouldn't go play there but they gonna have to probably move their families down there. That's where it becomes a tough sell if you ask me.
It would be next to impossible to make Mexico work. People don’t understand that players earn money in local currency but are paid in U.S dollars for all sports. So players in Canada say earn Canada Dollars but are paid in U.S Dollars so that has to be converted by the teams. Which is one of the reasons why Canada pro sports teams have such a hard time making a profit and surviving . Also one of the main reasons why the Expos failed.
The Hampton Roads area should get a major sports franchise, I would love to see that. Hartford-New Haven, market size is big enough but I just don't see it happening, too close to Boston and New York, too wrapped up in UConn basketball.
Vancouver was doomed to fail from the start. Bad marketing, terrible regional TV contract, bad merchandise, and players didn't want to play there. If the Association wants to expand into Western Canada again, my choice (coming from a Calgarian) would be Edmonton. Modern arena and a storied basketball history in that city.
@@higgy04Canada should have their OWN pro basketball baseball league instead of sharing with the Americans all the time. That way Cities like Calgary Winnipeg Saskatoon whatever, can have teams instead of nothing at all. By the way NFL is a garbage version of Rugby with more commercials and more inconsistent rules. Rugby is infinitely better
I do not follow the logic of why the NBA has to wait until their media contracts are signed before they announce expansion franchises for Las Vegas and Seattle.
The somewhat recent adage is “TV runs sports.” Media pay considerably more than what ticket buyers and suite lease holders pay. The TV contracts pay all the salaries before one seat is sold.
I think that Kansas City is their US city 3 and after that they will target international for those last 3 spots. Assuming 36 is the true final number which I believe it to be. I think they will favor Vancouver over Montreal because its on the Pacific and Montreal would be seen as taking from the Raptors.
@commodorezero Vancouver is smaller than Boston I think Calgary or Edmonton would be better fits and KC is perfect there's no team I'm the Middle of The Countey and they would be a perfect city
@@tmac29nyc there is like 3 million ppl in metro Vancouver its twice the size of calgary and is considered a world city after the 2010 Olympics. If the team lasted another 5 years they would never have moved because after 2010 Van became one of the hottest markets to live in on earth.
@@tmac29nyc Calgary and Edmonton would make great G-League franchises. Vancouver is the 3rd biggest city in Canada, and bigger population than Edmonton and Calgary combined.
For the chance to expand into the international market, the NBA will find a way. Europe would be a better option, but the schedule/distance doesn't allow for it.
Im 23 so the royals (now sacremento kings) were before my time from what my grandmother has told me much like the wha stingers “nobody cared for them” is that true? If not id love to see the lidner family (who runs fc cincinnati) get the royals revived. Or an nhl team at the minimum.
Im sure this is a crazy take but if they put a team in Mexico City its an almost given that Cartels are going to have a field day! They already tell people who visit not to show any signs of wealth dont go out at night especially alone or walking etc. So with the fact that you dont know what officials are corrupt and we know the state of the Police down there is questionable add to it any Cartel involvement and its a recipe for disaster!! Having a Pro Mexican Futbol Club is one thing but to add ANY PRO team from the USA is just going to be a slap in the face to the cartels! In my opinion of course I just think there is to many factors that are uncontrollable for any US Pro league to be anywhere in Mexico at least not until they get the Cartels under control and there is no more corruption in any area of Government in Mexico!!
We're still talking about a city that's bigger than NYC, an international metropolis with unlimited potential money and marketing wise. And that team is going to represent the whole entire country so I doubt the local officials and government will allow that Cartels to have their way with things. Does the cartels even run wild in Mexico City?
I understand that people in the US think we live in a mad max type of situation, but Mexico City is a great city. I know we have parts of the country with gigantic security and safety issues, but those dont affect CDMX for the most part. And you are forgetting 1 thing, the NBA and the players are from the US. The cartels are not dumb, touching a hair of any of those players would have insane consequenses, specially now that the republican party is most likely going to regain the presidency (the republicans have been pushing to label cartels as terrorist organizarions). The cartels do not want to give the US any more reasons to label them as terrorists
If the NBA expands to Mexico, it could have a similar transformative effect as it did in Canada. Before the NBA expanded to Toronto Raptors and the late Vancouver Grizzlies, in the 90's NBA only had 2-4 Canadians like Rick Nash, Samuel Dalembert, Jamal Magloire, and Rick Fox. Now, the NBA has over 40 Canadian players in the NBA and G-league combined. Canadian players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett, Andrew Wiggins, Dillion Brooks, Sheldon Sharpe, Luguentz Dort, Benedict Mathurin, Dwight Powell, Kelly Olynyk, Brandon Clarke, Andrew Nembhard, Delano Banton, Trey Lyles, Joshua Primo, Lindell Wigginton, and Tristan Thompson to name just a few of the 23 Canadian NBA players in 2022/23 season. The expansion to Canada has not only increased the diversity of the league but also brought in a wealth of talent that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. A similar expansion to Mexico could have a similar effect, bringing in new talent and expanding the global reach of the NBA.
I think all sport leagues should expand to 40 teams. More money, more games throughout the week for NBA, NHL, and MLB so teams wont have to play back to back and the MLB can get rid of that series schedule. It will be good for the NFL because more games played between Thursday through Monday and teams could have 2 to 3 by weeks for the season.
@@dreamcage1801 Would I like the Blazers to win more than one championship in 54 years? Yes. (That’s better than Phoenix, at least) So if you’re an owner like that, are you really voting to expand any more than you have to? No. Now… what if I tell you there should be 400 teams? With promotion and relegation? Therefore more to play for (including a cup competition with ALL 400 teams)? Oh, and doing so by casting all the owners into Kilauea, mandating season ticket holder ownership, therefore actually helping your “we have good fans” argument matter? Because as long as we don’t, we get an over abundance of stealing from taxpayers to build arenas for the rich. Make it sane.
I am certain the NBA plans to expand to 36 teams by 2036. Mexico City, Seattle and Vegas are locks and so is either Montreal or Vancouver and then 2 other American cities.
St Louis would be the best choice as far as fans go but the city is a corrupt hellhole. Vegas has been a success for other leagues so that is happening. Sonics leaving wasn’t the fault of Seattle fans so they’re deserving. Stay out of Mexico though good lord. Mexico City is beautiful but cmon Adam. Mexico and basketball don’t go together.
already had a team, be a bad decision. Key arena is junk, no parking, and it's not like an owner is going to spend money to win anything. One of the worst sports cities in America
Cincinnati has a venue problem. If the NBA and/or NHL both expanded there, Either one or two new venues would have to be built. Cincy is not financially able to support a new arena for either league.
I've done the 3 hour flight from San Diego to a couple of games in Mexico City.... it's a nice arena, not in the best part of town but the interior rivals and even surpasses some US arenas.
The Memphis Grizzlies are committed to Western Tennessee through 2029 but if things don't improve there it would make sense to move the Grizzlies to Nashville and share Bridgestone Arena with the NHL Predators. Music City is growing at a rate where they can support all 4 major pro leagues, assuming they get an MLB team through expansion or possibly relocation.
A Mexico City expansion into the NBA would be bonkers. Look at household earnings. Most households or individuals can't afford going to an NBA Basketball game. It would be like putting a team like the Boston Celtics in Butt Hollow, West Virginia and expecting to draw 20,000 night after night.
Seattle: oodles of Microsoft, Amazon, and even Boeing money. That benefits more than the Sonics. Vegas: King James says so… and while this bugs me, too, the Raiders work by attracting tons of away fans. So will be with NBA. Maybe even the A’s.
@@mattyg-r1x I think Cincinnati would be the best place. It combines Louisville, Lexington and half of Ohio into one market. That's a lot of people... Plus Louisville already has a great college tradition - but who knows. It's a lovely town and it was always my favorite place to play regional baseball tournies as a youth.
I think after Seattle and Las Vegas, Montreal is the most likely city (I think there are some potential issues with Mexico City). The Brooklyn Nets are playing G-League games in Montreal and the game of basketball is growing in that city. Also, I think if the NBA expands by four cities, they will have to expand by six cities eventually because there is no way to have divisions with the same number of teams with 34 teams and that is why I think the NHL is going to have 36 teams in the near future. Saying that, if the NBA expands to 36 teams, I think Mexico City, Vancouver, and Montreal would all have NBA teams as I feel like the NBA wants to be in those markets and there does seem to be ownership groups interested, especially in Montreal.
The smart thing to do would be to add 4 teams in the West: Seattle, Vancouver, Las Vegas and Kansas City. The move two of the following three teams: Minnesota, Memphis or New Orleans to the East.
With the possible 2 expansion teams in Las Vegas & Seattle, the real question is will the Oklahoma City Thunder & Memphis Grizzlies move to the Eastern Conference? Geographically it makes sense to move those 2 teams to the East. That'd be cool if that happened. Can you imagine a Seattle Supersonics vs Oklahoma City Thunder NBA finals?! Oh man!!
The altitude (almost 7500 FT) is what's going to kill Mexico City's prospects. Every away team playing there would be at a decided disadvantage. Plus, unlike Canada, the vast majority of the inhabitants in Mexico City don't speak English, so the cultural adaptation required of legit NBA players would be quite drastic. And that's not even getting into the fact that Mexico, for all it's future prospects, is a developing country where poverty and corruption are endemic and in your face on a daily basis. NBA players, and this happens in Europe with soccer players, would essentially be marked men due to their overt wealth. Because of all of these things, I just have a hard time believing that any top players would want to play there.
San Antonio could have an NFL team. They are marketing the Spurs heavily just in Austin which is the next major metroplex but play preseason in Mexico, and can market themselves as a favorite to Mexico. I think Seattle and LV should be the next ones to get NBA teams for sure.
I’d say reinstate the Seattle SuperSonics and add team to Cincinnati. Move the Pelicans to Las Vegas, Timberwolves to STL or KC, and perhaps move the wizards to Richmond and reinstate the Virginia squires
Dude there is a better chance of a team in Beijing or on Mars than Quebec City. It has NOTHING to do with them having a new arena - enough sprooking this town already lol
I don't understand why someone would want to professional team that has, basically, no change of wining a championship....for a very long time....if ever.
The only city that deserves a team is Seattle (I say this as a Knicks fan). At a certain point, the competition will get watered down. Plus, few players would want to play in Mexico City.
Ginger's research into team and state contracts, negotiations, lease agreements, proposals and ownership history or will & trust is lacking semblance of research other than reading the title of an article. Click bait channel😂
Proposals Seattle(yes they need to) Vegas (sure, if they want money and of course the nba will) Montreal (toronto vs montreal) Cincinnati (royals revived) Columbus(cleveland rivalry) Pittsburgh (could be a rivalry with philly) St louis and kansas city (good rivalry) Tampa “Bay”: tampa bay lightning arena is packed. Nashville: have bridgestone arena so they could move right in! And its growing. San diego. Honorable mentions: Louisville. Baltimore. Ottowa Edmonton (rogers place is amazing) Calgary Vancouver
@@dreamcage1801oh right….i totally forgot about that lemme add that to the list! Didnt the clippers play there before going to la? But then again nah california has the lakers also they have clippers warriors kings they have 2 teams per league in LA alone they have enough.
No I think people are wising up two recent failed votes in KC is prime example. Public funding is coming to an end for these things. People have had enough.
I have the perfect Canadian city for an NBA team. Have the team play out of Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata, Ontario but they won't be called 'Ottawa (insert bilingual team name here). Have the team be called 'Almonte (insert name here)' in honour of the birthplace of inventor James Naismith. The town is a 15-20 minute drive from Canadian Tire Centre anyway.
