Adam Tooze is best known for his highly-regarded books on the economic history of Nazi Germany, the remaking of the global economic and political order starting in World War I, and his account of how the economic effects of the 2008 financial crisis rippled across the globe for a decade to follow. Recently, he’s become an influential voice on Twitter documenting the pandemic-induced strain on the world’s financial systems.
Adam joined Tyler to discuss the historically unusual decision to have a high-cost lockdown during a pandemic, why he believes in a swoosh-shaped recovery, portents of financial crises in China and the West, which emerging economies are currently most at risk, what Keynes got wrong about the Treaty of Versailles, why the Weimar Republic failed, whether Hitler was a Keynesian, the political and economic prospects of various EU members, his trick to writing a lot, how Twitter encourages him to read more, what he taught executives at BP, his advice for visiting Germany, and more.

Tooze is amazing. Every book, every article, every interview is full of masterful understanding of the world. The technical knowledge of the economist alongside the historian's ability to weave complex events into a narrative.

I think it rather poor form for you to comment on someone's sexual history in public. Kindly refrain from espousing your optimal number of climactic transactions for strangers henceforth. Good Day Sir!

Thank you for another interesting talk. I'd add the Saarland to your list of places to see in Germany. It has a wide variety of things to see and offers a nice mix of French and German culture.

Surprising answer from Adam Toole. Those cities that did lock down during the Spanish Flu proved the overall cost was far less that in those cities that did not. Having read Crashed I am surprised to find myself struggling to follows his arguments on this topic.

Because he's trying to hoodwink the audience.

If you want to understand the present world, you better read a lot of modern history (19- and 20th century). Adam Tooze is pretty much the perfect example of its usefulness.

It’s Mercatus, which gives it demerits at the start. Worth giving it an hour?

Nice to see fears of inflation debunked - the system has radically changed since the 70's.

How do you like those gas prices and inflation?
@bcaominh
@bcaominh 2 года назад
@@goodmorningsundaymorning3127 we are going into a liquidity crisis i.e. not enough cash to chase goods and services. That is monetary deflation. However, the price hikes are related to supply and demand of goods. Of course if there is less money circulating, while prices of goods are going up due to scarcity then your purchasing power is even more declining.

@@bcaominh So what? It was all created by Tooze's friends at the WEF. Pieces of trash! How many will they murder to stop climate change?
