very interesting video (like always) I think, it would be really interesting if you could talk about your experiences with different Luthiers /Brands in general (like you sometimes do a little while reviewing). For example: why order, or why not order a sandberg, mayones, adamovic etc. As you have probably more expertise on that subject than most people.

For me, Peter is a keeper. I am also continuing to thoroughly enjoy every time that YOU play a bass or three on camera, as well... In spite of some of the feedback you’ve received from others, I personally appreciate when you occasionally highlight the high end, boutique instruments. It helps me to maintain a reference and perspective when the less expensive basses, like Cort, include features that most would except to only find in the upper price range. For instance, I saw some older videos of Mohini Dey playing a Cort Artisan 5 string. She sounds just as good on that as she does today, since she began endorsing Mayones. Are there “real” differences between the brands. Certainly, however, the biggest differences will always be made by the musicians, themselves. The best can make rice paper or cardboard sound amazing! At the end of the day, WE ARE THE REAL INSTRUMENTS. The music is inside of each of us. The external instrument is merely a conduit that enables us to translate our internal energy (imagination) into an expression that others can experience with us. And each of us may not hear or experience the exact same thing as the next person. The enjoyment and experience of any art form is ultimately very personal. That’s part of what you were explaining about really completely knowing what you like and want in a custom instrument, in advance, far beyond what it will look like... Take good care!

This was a great episode, listening to you talk about things to think about when buying a custom instrument. I spent so many months researching what I wanted in my instrument, trying out similar instruments, and also working one on one with the company that I was working with. In the end, I got the exact bass I wanted!

Great advice regarding "try before buy/design". I was sure hipshot tuners were the best because everyone talks about them. I bought and installed them and then immediately realized that I hate not having fluted shafts. Simple, personal stuff that you just don't realize until you try it yourself.

Very well said! So many bass players pay tons of money for a custom bass, but don’t know EXACTLY what they want. A preamp was good here, favorite pups, but how would they sound together? What change would certain WOODS bring to the tone and weight? So glad you said that! Love your channel! Keep going. Peter’s cool I guess. You can sprinkle him in here and there! Lol. I’m a fan of our tried and true!

Cool to see another Adamovic bass on your channel! I actually did an internship at Nikola's and started working on my own bass during that time, because he gave me a neck that he otherwise would have thrown away (it was an older model). The bass was far from finished when my internship ended, but he let me finish the bass under his supervision in his own workplace! Now I've got a bass of my own design (I actually used the outline of the Saturn for my own bass) built with my own hands and I couldn't be happier!

Your advice is good: trust the pros. (Glad to see you are still learning.) Why does anyone think they can design a better bass than Adamovic (or name your favorite luthier)? The trick is finding the luthier whose instruments speak to you, the player.

Very relevant tips on ordering custom basses. You have to really know what you want. I have three custom Mike Lull basses, and if I'd ordered them earlier in my career I would probably have asked for specs that weren't as suited to the instrument. As it is, I changed the pickups on the first one after a couple of years, but otherwise they're perfect for me. The combination of my requirements and advice from the builder and my dealer helped us together craft something that really works. FWIW, your bass doesn't sound too bright on the recordings here... but it does appear to have 22 frets, not just 21 ;)

The Adamovic has 22 frets (not 21). Just sayin. Too bad he doesn’t want to keep making 22-fret basses. I think it’s the sweet spot. I doubt I’d buy a custom bass again. Even if you get what you want, every instrument is unique. Dead spots, weak spots in the wrong places, balance on your body, etc. can kill the joy of an otherwise perfect instrument.
@acoustrip
@acoustrip 3 года назад
Hi Gregor! What's the thickness of the top? Because with what I build I experienced that tops under 8mm don't react in the final sound. But I think in your case it's more the neck that brings the high frequencies and the 5 screws ot fix the neck. Love this basses by the way and I also work on Light weight instruments for the start of my brand. (You missed my brand at the first Holy Grail Guitar Show ;) )

Gregor, this was a great video. A lot of really useful information for anyone planning on ordering a custom bass. I am having a custom bass made at present and I was thinking of a holly top because I love the look. Now I definitely know more and will make a more educated decision. I have a custom bass that I have owned for a year and I spent possibly 5 hours on Zoom (over several sessions) with the luthier. He really knew what I wanted and was able to make suggestions based on my desires. The result: I love that bass and it really fills a need for me.

Your custom bass is just perfect ! Love the design and woods, you have good, refined taste. And most importantly, sounds amazing. I cannot stand those heavily flamed instruments, they look tacky to me; save those woods for furniture. I agree with you, communicate your wants and needs but let your Luthier guide you and do what's right, if you hire a renowned architect but you tell him/her how to design your home you'll never get a good piece of architecture.

American holly is fairly unstable in thicknesses beyond veneer dimension. Somewhat surprising to see luthiers such as Adamovic and Fodera using it for tops. Also a bit surprising to see such a generous amount of wood used in the headstock shape when saving weight is such an important part of the design concept.

Just my opinion here but based on my experience messing with many preamp and pickup combos you can definitely tamp down the brightness in that bass with an electronics swap. Some Bartolini pickups, and yes, a Mike Pope flexcore preamp will definitely tame some the high end on that bass. A John east circuit may also be a good option. Anything with a passive tone control should help a lot. I'm also a big fan of the new Nordstrand J-blades, just another consideration. However, If you're looking to warm the tone up fairly quickly, I would lose the Glockenklang preamp. Those pre's have such a super hi-fi sound, it almost boarders on shrill in some instruments. Wiring that bass up passive, even if you did nothing else, could be a huge plus for the tone.

Talk to the luthier! Talk to the luthier is damn right !

It doesn't seem like it should be that hard to take the holly top off and laminate some ash on instead. Or perhaps route all the holly out just from under the bridge and install a different tonewood there. Maple fretboards are also very bright unfortunately. Rosewood seems to give a darker tone.

I currently own 6 basses, but have played a LOT of different basses. I love all of Leo's basses, and also boutique basses too - so no particular bias. I really think if you want a bass that's perfect for you, you have to find it, not build it. Like lovers: someone who looks great on paper (or tinder) won't necessarily be perfect when you meet them.

I'm so glad I subscribed to your channel! Keep these videos coming. Also, no, it was not too long; I love that you take the time to explain things so fully. I've thought many times about getting a custom bass and this all seems like great advice to keep in mind when I finally do decide on one. Thanks, Gregor!
