I did watch MP100 first before reading the manga. And it made me realize how genius the anime adaptation is, I was surprised to find that the part where Mob and Reigen snuck to a girls-only school was actually from a much later part in the manga that frankly I find rather weirdly placed, especially with the stuff it discussed about pursuing what you want to do in life-a topic that has been touched earlier in the manga, and the subsequent arc doesn't even discuss it further either. I'm glad the anime decided to place it in an early ep to further build up on Mob's final realization of what he wants to do with his life and joins the Body Improvement Club. It was honestly really neat and how they tie in that part with Mob's dillema about wether or not to join the telepathy club using the rather hilarious gag of Reigen telling Mob not to let other people force him to do what he doesn't want to do-only to reveal that he currently doesn't want to disguise in a drag like they are currently doing. That was honestly brilliant. I also loved how masterfully Bones placed the random omakes in the lighter episodes to show how Mob and Reigen's daily life is like in the Spirits and Such Office. I hope if Season 3 is made, Bones will still be the one who made it.

This channel is one of the only ones where a crunchyroll sponsor doesn't feel like a horribly uncomfortable change of pace.

Basically, what Bones gets that a lot of other adapters don't is that you have to *understand* the work before you know what to change. Of course, a lot of the time these adaptations are done before teh source manga is even at its halfway point, much less finished, so understanding is a tall order. (The reason the first FMA anime worked is because they talked to Arakawa about it, so they COULD understand it.)

Your insight into how FMA was written explains a lot about how me and my brother would often go "Oh! Shit just got real!" after every two episodes of FMA:B

Really liked this video and I agree to many points. I love a lot of Studio Bones' series because they have amazing adaptations. One thing tho: I cringed when I saw Paku Romi's picture when you mentioned Arakawa Hiromu. Google pops that picture out when searching for the mangaka but only because Paku Romi (as voice of Edward Elric) once visited Arakawa Hiromu's workplace and the picture was taken and published in an article. Arakawa's face in the article itself was always plastered with her cow icon. She doesn't really have pictures floating around, very private person. I'm a fan of both of them so I know this very well.

aaaahhhh, it's always nice to see smart people who understand what it means to adapt material. Not trying to be condescending to other people but i just think that it helps to 1. understand what makes a story 2. be more open minded about creative changes and how they affect the mediums they are in

Holy shit. You really hit it out of the park with imo. Bones changes to Mob Psycho 100's story have been very well done. Many readers of Mob Psycho only stumbled upon it because they enjoyed the ONE's gags so much. I honestly remember reading Mob Psycho just to get more One Punch Man like content but as the series went on, ONE steadily increased his efforts to show Mob's growth. Bones has created a show where Mob's character growth is the main focus by re-sequencing the chapters and increasing emphasis on Mob's emotions and decisions. The result is a greater understanding of Mob's character. The early addition of Mob's exorcism of the ghost at the girl's academy provided much needed action to the episode as well as creating a parallel of Mob's psyche. We get an introduction to Mob's situation with adolescence and the ghost may be a grim warning that Mob will not be happy if he just continues to play the weak, reserved boy. Mob resolves this by doing something to improve his life for the first time in his life; joining the body improvement club. Not only did Bones create better pacing for the audience, they used this opportunity to increase the significance of the characters actions.

Really enjoying the Mob Psycho 100 anime thus far, I hope it will be awesome! One has a knack for writing really sweet main characters.

I’m really glad you brought up the Scott Pilgrim movie! I think it was an amazing adaptation because they managed to fit months of time that passed in the comics into one movie that definitely made some major changes but overall managed to keep the same tone and major plot points. However, I don’t think I’ve seen the ending where Scott chooses Knives so I’m definitely gonna check that out!

Every time I see footage of Re:Zero I cringe. Not because I dislike the show. But because it is so good that just seeing an unrelated clip gives me a feeling one could compared to PTSD. That show is dark, man.

It feels like there is so much to talk about when it comes to adaptations, I could see this video getting multiple more parts and being filled with just as much knowledge about the adaptation process, especially on the sound effects and music.

You have a great breakdown of process and the expectations of these media, very good! As a webcomic artist it gets broken down even further, if I'm uploading only a single page at a time it had better be a very good one regardless of extra plots ideas or humor, there needs to be something useful in each one, too. I love the way you broke everything down here comparatively.

Since FMA was mentioned so many times, I feel it should be mentioned that FUNimation has announced that the anime is going out of print (AKA no longer selling the anime ever) and that you should buy it now if you want it. FYI, I'm not an employee of or affiliated with FUNimation, I just thought you guys might want to know.

Sometimes, the manga is good enough to be directly adapted into anime like assassination classroom, it used almost the exact same frames and story line, and it worked.

I'm going to say this, Attack on Titan was PAINFUL to watch episode to episode. "I waited a week for THAT?!" and "There was literally 7 min of relevant content in that episode" were common thoughts. When I finally rewatched it on netflix, once they started doing japanese audio, with my wife a year and a half later it wasn't nearly so bad but my wife agreed the entire thing would have been infuriating on a weekly basis. Many other anime are fine to watch weekly but not that.

fma brotherhood is a huge favorite of mine. watched it as it aired. liked it better than the original anime that side tracked the manga (due to it not being complete). it was a bit rushed in the beginning as it assumed the audience had watched the previous anime and/or read the manga, but it was still awesome. been watching mob psycho as it comes out and i love it. i read the manga, which is also good. sure the art isn't the best and i can't wait until it's animated into it's way more awesome anime version. but good manga needs good story the most. we've all seen how pretty an anime can look but have bad animation and/or story. i choose the story over the art.

Tried to watch someone else once, they referred to others that liked Berserk as cucks instead of providing legitimate points, and then said that Bleach was his favorite anime. Needless to say, I cringed all the way back here.

I kind of liked the new ending to Scott Pilgrim. Knives seemed too immature for a relationship, and I got the feeling that Scott didn't actually like knives all that much.

oh Thank you for recognizing this. Too many times do I enter a forum and find myself eye-rolling at people who have no clue on how to adapt a work and freak out because a line or panel did not get included or the order of the scenes did not follow exactly as it did in the source material.

I would love it, if you could make little annotations for the series shown in the video, if you don't mention them in the video (and sometimes even then, as the series mentioned at 1:22 "Utena"(?) didn't yield any results when sought for (or at least I'm not sure if it is what's coming up) I know it would be a lot of work to edit them in in the video itself, but me and I think many others would really appreciate the effort, even if it is done via annotations.

And then there is the other kind of adaptation, where the "changing things around "-part completly destroys the heart of the original. On a totally unrelated note I am still waiting for someone to adapt Eragon into a movie..

As a a jaded former anime fan I'm hopeful this channel can direct me towards the good ones. There is not only so much bad anime out there but also hordes of fans who think all this bad anime is fantastic. You are literally the first anime critic (of sorts) I've encountered with some actual taste. FYI it was your videos on SOA that caught my attention. I tend to have low expectations for anime because of past disappointments but my god that show seemed like it was actively trolling me at some point.

FMA 03 was a great adaptation that got how to do it right as well.

On the other hand an aspect of manga that makes It suitable for anime adaptation is its cinematic almost storyboard way of stucturing its panels and conveying movement. And at the same time having an overarching plot and linear progression, that can translate well into a series aside from indivual stories.

I started reading the manga sometime ago and I knew BONES would do a good job with the anime, but so far it'e been better than I had originally perceived, and am looking forward to the rest of the series immensely. IT'S REALLY GOOD EVERYONE SHOULD START WATCHING IT
