In this video, I'm testing out a new lens for the Pentax 67 that I had custom-made-a Schneider Xenotar 80mm f2.8 HFT from the Rollei SLX 6x6 camera system. I'm hoping this could be a replacement for the amazing, but expensive, Pentax 67 75mm f2.8. I head out to photograph some racing here in England and share the images as well as my first impressions.

You may be able to get this setup far cheaper by buying a 80mm Xenotar 2.8 in Shutter made for Medium Format View Cameras (~$200) and then mount it on a cheap M65 helicoid with a Pentax 6x7 mount of some sort (short extension tube might work).

I am loving the '35mm' perspective with the shallow DOF - something you'd need at least a f1.4 lens on 35mm format cameras, but even then the background separation and rendering won't be as nice - but the cherry on the cake is the aspect ratio of 6x7 which is just so much more natural and 'breathable' than the constricted 3:2 framing of 35mm lenses on 35mm format cameras.
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall Год назад
I agree. The 67 / 45 aspect ratio is one of my favourites. Takes some getting used to if you're used to shooting 35mm, but I enjoy it a lot more.

You were one of the reasons why II decided to grab a Pentax 6x7. I haven't had a chance to use it but I'm already looking into buying new glass. I'm definitely intrigued by these custom adaptations.
@randallstewart175
@randallstewart175 Год назад
Given the relative pricing, I recommend that you get over your infatuation with "adaptions" before you start spending money. Here, he never said in the video or otherwise posted a link to whoever did this adaption for him. Take that as a message in the medium. He also did not describe any limitations to the adaption or confirm none. I suspect that the lens aperture for this one is now no longer automatic, meaning that you manually open to focus, then manually shut down to shoot. Finally, the acknowledged vignetting at wider apertures means that to shoot this lens for a normal looking image, you'll have to shut it down to 5.6 or smaller. This means the the Pentax 75mm 4.5 will still equal of exceed this performance, for about 1/7th the price. Overall, I''m not sure why this video got made. The thoughts coming to mind are "I took a $700 lens and spent $500 turning into garbage.", or "I screwed up big time, so I may as well get a YT video out of it."
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall Год назад
Cheers, Michael. Worth looking into one of these IMO. As mentioned in the video, one of the Rollei branded 80mm lenses is a more affordable option than this.

I owned an adapted Rolleiflex SL66 Planar 80mm doubled coated version and wanted to leave some useful information.Due to these cameras tilt function these lenses typically have a lot of coverage. The camera spicific mount and spacers are when removed just screwed onto a screwmount. The adapted lens i got from a polish ebay seller account name 'pk674' and he offers some crazy conversions for the system. Anyway it was basically a focusing helicoil screwed into the screwmount. I'm sure these can be found with the knowledge of the screwmount diameter without the cost of a rehousing or even shimming. Though I have not done it. This would potentially be the budget option. Also I might add that adaptation of the wider lenses from the Rollei system like 50 & 60mm I was told the back element would be too large and hit the mirror.

You can also adapt the Norita Noritar 80/2.0 if you like more shallow depth of field. Or a lot of the Schneider Cinelux lenses or ISCO Cinelux or Kiptar/Super Kiptar lenses as long as they are 95mm or longer. And of course the legendary Kodak Aero Ektar or it's competitors like the Leitz Hektor.

Should be mentioned, that the Noritar will only focus to about 1m and all ISCOs and Cineluxes under 110mm will either not reach infinity or heavily vignette / have smearing edges.
@KNURKonesur
@KNURKonesur Год назад
@@BillionairesBoysClub yes! Also it's always a question of priorities. With all of those lenses being used mostly for portraits, I wouldn't mind sacrificing infinity focus to get a better minimum focus distance via using a shorter helicoid.

I worked for a photographer back in late 90s who had the Rollei system. We used it for product and editorial still life. Lens technology at this point was ultra optimised for film and the lenses are quite spectacular. If only it was 6x7 or 6x8 however. Still it's very compact for a modular system camera.

Its painful to imagine a lens thats wide and shallow .. every image in this video after your crop could have been taken with the 150 2.8 with 100x better results . the 45mm f4 is incredible ... if you dont own it get it ASAP.
