Did you know that you can adapt the brightness and color temperature of your lights using Home Assistant based on the position of the sun? This helps in maintaining your biological clock and might lead to improved sleep, mood, and general well-being. For instance, you can set the brightness to a maximum at sunrise and let’s say 50% at sunset. But you can also start increasing the brightness and color temperature gradually at sunrise so that it follows the position of the sun. The same counts for sunset. Let me show you how to do this in this Home Assistant Tutorial.

Great tutorial thank you! I have this on my HA installation and it works great, the only issue I have is when the lights turn on, they come on the previous settings, take a second and then adjust. Is there a way so that they come straight on with the Adaptive lighting parameters? Sometimes when I go into a room where the lights were last on at say midday, you get a blinding white light in the middle of the night then it dims and changes to warm. Thanks!

This adaptive lighting repository wouldn’t work for dimmer switches instead of bulbs? Or would it not offer the unnecessary Kelvin temperature adjustment if I selected a wall switch?

I think if you use the "change device type of a switch" helper, it might work for your switches as well. As long as your switch can change the brightness of your bulbs.

Hi, First, thank you for the video! Second, I have some questions. I've just learned about Adaptive Lighting, as well as HACS today. Would you happen to know if it's possible to activate the Adaptive Lighting within Google Routines? For instance, The use case I have in mind is to have it activate (along with other things within my routine) when I say, "hey google, good morning". I'm assuming I wouldn't be able to see Adaptive Lighting natively within the Hue app or within Google Routines, so I was hoping you might have an answer as to whether this is possible somehow before I consider going through with setting it up. I appreciate any insights you may have -- thanks again!

You can switch adaptive lighting on and off. With the Google integration it should be possible to do this as well, but I have adaptive lighting active all day so that it adapts to the daylight automatically when the light turns on.

@@SmartHomeJunkie With smart bulbs that are used with regular wall switches, when someone turns off the light, the smart bulbs and it's controls become useless. Wanted to understand what wall light switches you use with the smart bulbs (and which smart bulbs) to prevent this issue. I'm only aware of a few that keeps power to the light even when it's "switched off" - Philips Hue Remote, Lutron Aurora, Innovelli 2-1 switch (Red for Z-Wave) or (Blue for Zigbee) and RunLessWire Switch. Curious of what you are using or it there is a alternative to the expensive Hue ecosystem.

I love adaptive lighting. Have mine dialled in nicely and the changes over the course of the day you don't even notice. One thing I haven't figured out yet is how to avoid the jarring effect when a light hasn't been on and its previous state is vastly different from the current adaptive lighting state. This results in the light turning on in the previous state before adaptive lighting kicks in and set it to what it should be. Even with the transitions set to 0. Wondering if anyone else has the same problem?
@SmartHomeJunkie
@SmartHomeJunkie 2 года назад
I have the same, but I do not consider it a problem personally. Even when you create a script in Home Assistant that turns on a light with a certain Kelvin and brightness value you will have the same effect, so I think it's more core related.

@wouterdr

I have the same problem. Let me know if you find a workaround. And a lot of the times Adaptive Lighting turns my lights back on as the light states are sometimes not that well reported in HA. And so it thinks they are still on and changes their color nd brightness, turning them back on. Had to stop using it for this reason. Will have to play with extra lightgroups and all/any state, I think.

Hi, the adaptive lights integration is very nice, however i dont like that the lights adapt when turned on instead of initially turning on at the correct setting. Is it possible to make a custom dynamic Light profile in Configuration.yaml that has the state atributes of the adaptive lights switch hereby always turning the lights on at the right settings when applying the light profile in the light_Turn_on service call in an automation?

@@SmartHomeJunkie i dont think so either unfortunatly, For me it is an showstopper that the adaption first occurs when the lights are switched on. As far as i know, this does not have to be the case as the integration does not utilize the current bulb attributes to determine the correct setting bu t instead just the position of the sun etc.

So I tried running this on my HA server using this video as a guide for about a week and here is my results: lights started turning on and off at random; sometimes motion sensors would trigger lights still and other times no sensor would trigger lights; all of my automations previously made also stopped working and had to all be deleted and re-made from scratch; light colors would change randomly and also started doing this 1 minute long phase where they started at a cool white color and transition into warm white color and then they reset back to cool white and do it all over again and this would happen even when nothing would trigger the light to even be turned on. This HACS integration is a wonderful idea but terribly flawed and faulty. Just make your own template sensors in your configuration.yaml and use those to drive your automations, requires a little math but will work 100% of the time without issue unlike this very buggy HACS integration.

Who needs a disco when you have lights turning on and off randomly, am I right? But in all seriousness, that sounds like a major headache. And this really should not happen.
