Let's build a crowbar!
I got this device from Tom, WA2IVD. This is a "crowbar" circuit, designed to protect your gear from an overvoltage situation out of the power supply. It comes as a kit and takes just a few minutes to put together.

All you need is a single power transistor and a resistor to make an over current crowbar if you need that.

Years ago my $100 Pyramid 20 amp power supply smoked my IC-718 with 24 volts. If I had one of these things back then I could have saved my $550 radio.

I assume you had a current limited power supply which is not capable of blowing the fuse in the crowbar. Crowbars do short the output, which would immediately blow the fuse behind the crowbar.
