FULL DISCLOSURE: IF YOU DECIDE TO DO THIS MODIFICATION TO YOUR OWN TRUCK MAKE SURE YOU GET A GAUGE CLUSTER THAT MATCHES THE SAME YEAR OF YOUR VEHICLE. THERE WERE CHANGES TO THE WIRING ACROSS THE YEARS. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN YOUR VEHICLE NOT CHARGING PROPERLY AS WELL AS DISRUPT THE ABS SYSTEM.
!!!!DO THIS MODIFICATION AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!
If I had known it was this easy to add a tachometer to my truck I would have done this YEARS AGO!!! I'm especially glad that I didn't just go and buy a aftermarket tach. in the past that would've required me to drill into my dashboard. Even though I installed the tachometer gauge cluster in my 1994 truck without any issues I made the mistake of buying a gauge cluster that wasn’t the correct year (I purchased a 1992 gauge cluster) which resulted in the alternator to not charge properly, and left me stranded on the side of the road. Instead of hunting down another tach. gauge cluster somewhere I ended up going back to the gauge cluster that was originally in my vehicle to start off with. I still wanted to leave this video posted because this modification does work, but take it from me you have to be EXTRA CAREFUL to find the right year gauge cluster. Ford changed the wiring for the gauge clusters in the middle of the production years, so someone might think they’re buying the same year cluster when in reality they’re a couple of months off. If you're thinking of doing this to your own truck and you have any questions or concerns let me know down in the comment section below and I'd be happy to help you out. Thanks for watching!

I did this on my 1992 E-350 many years ago. However, when you install an F series cluster in an E series you have to redo many of the wires as the wiring harnesses are a little different. Basically I'd just trace out the wires and where'd they do and just pull the pins out of the harness and rearrange them on my harness.

If you don't think your tach is accurate, you can go through disassembly again down to the bare gauges. using a dwell tach meter to gather the actual RPMs from under the hood. compare that to what the tach reads on the dash. 3000 RPM's sounds like a lot at 60 especially if you have overdrive. Check the tag on your differential and see what your gear ratio is. If your tach dwell reading is not consistent with your dash tach you can reset it by taking two spoons and removing the tach needle carefully. There will be a tiny needle in the hole where the needle came off. If your tach reads 1000 RPM's on the dash at idle and the dwell reads 500 RPMS reinstall the needle back in the tach while the truck is running to coincides with the tach dwell meter. Just be very careful to get the tiny needle inside the tach lined up with the tach indicator needle. It may take several tries.
@ydocproductions5593
@ydocproductions5593 3 года назад
That’s all really good info. I think that the tach was correct because I only had a 3 speed in the truck (C6 trans), so that along with the 4.10 axle gears is probably the reason why it was 3,000 RPM.

I’m sorry but the diesel and gasoline tachometers are completely different when it comes to internal wiring. It wouldn’t even work for your truck. If you decide to do this swap it doesn’t matter what gas engine you use. What is absolutely crucial is that you use a tachometer that is the same year as your truck. If you don’t do that your truck won’t charge properly. Good luck with your swap😀👍

Hi Larry, I got mine out of a salvage yard for $30 if you wanted you could go to ebay for example, but expect to pay way more. The only issue with this swap I’d warn you about is you HAVE TO make sure your gauge cluster is the same year as your truck, otherwise your vehicle won’t charge properly. As for your mileage it’s almost impossible to guess what your current mileage would be. You could maybe get somewhere in the ballpark by getting a car fax report and back tracking your mileage from there but no way to get an exact number. Hope that helps!

I subbed maybe you are still keeping up with comments from old videos, this whole cluster thing is killing me, lol. Now did I just watch you switch gauges out of a cluster you bought into your original cluster? That won’t work for me, I’m trying to restore like nearly brand new a 93 f-150 xlt , I’ve gone over the frame and drive line every inch of it all rust removed and every seal and bearing that could be changed got changed. Every single piece of the braking system replaced with new stuff including the steel brake lines. I put a flat bed on it as it’s what I preferred, and I’m to the inside of the cab now. The truck started as a automatic and someone before me changed it to a manual, to my good luck they did an excellent job making the switch, the only thing they didn’t change was they left the original cluster with the gear indicators for the auto trans and absent tach. I have a 5 speed 93 F150 xlt 4x4 just like the only I’m restoring except it’s a 300 6 banger, restore is a 5.0 liter v8. I can’t just stick the gauges on my cluster, the plugs are the same but they are oriented different on the cluster from the 6 cylinder truck. I’m wondering if I can just install my odometer into the cluster from the 6 cylinder truck? I’m betting I probably can’t. I watched your video and figured I would ask, maybe you would know, either way your video was informative and too the point, my kind of vid! So I subbed.

Hi sir, when I did this swap I bought my gauge cluster at a junk yard and put my odometer from my truck and put it in the tachometer gauge cluster I had bought. To answer your questions however about swapping your gauge clusters from your two trucks, the short answer is yes. You can take the odometer from your 93 F-150 you’re restoring and swap it in the cluster from the 6cyl truck (that way you also keep the original mileage to your vehicle) . One big detail that you HAVE TO BE SURE of is that the gauge cluster you are using is the same year as your truck. If you don’t the truck won’t charge properly, and you could mess up the ABS system of your vehicle. The article I linked at the bottom does a real good job explaining that. A gauge cluster without a factory tachometer has a plastic housing that simply won’t allow you to take the gauges from a factory tachometer gauge cluster and swap it in. The plastics are simply just molded differently from the factory. To be clear though the center odometer sections of either gauge cluster are identical. I hope all of that made sense and helps answer your questions. It sounds like you have one awesome OBS Ford. I think you’d like the small video series I’ve posted recently of restoring a 1993 F-150. Thanks so much for subscribing and welcome to the channel!😀👍 Here’s the article better explaining the process of swapping out gauge clusters below: www.ford-trucks.com/articles/installing-an-oem-tachometer-in-a-1992-1996-f-150-or-bronco/

@ydocproductions5593

That wouldn’t work because the tachometer gauge cluster and the one you have in your truck currently have different plastic moldings where the gauges sit inside of the cluster. The tachometer gauges aren’t physically compatible with the gauge cluster that doesn’t have a tach. Hope that answers your question. If you do decide to do this swap MAKE SURE you get a gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck otherwise it won’t charge properly. 👍

Ok so after watching this I just did the same thing. I have a 1996 F-350 with a 5.8 gas. I got the new cluster from a 1995 F-150. Everything is working tach included as it should including all the warning lights, the only issue I now have is that the ABS light is staying on where as before with the original cluster it would come on for the "lamp check" and then stay off. I even put the original cluster back in to double check. So to recap, ABS light now stays on while engine is running with the different cluster that has the tach, any idea why?

@ydocproductions5593
@ydocproductions5593 Год назад
Hi Jim, that’s a great question. Ford changed the wiring in the gauge clusters between the years of the Old Body Style Ford trucks. Everything might look the same when it comes to hooking up the wiring harness and bolting it to the dash for example, but internally they are simply wired different. Which means the 1994 gauge cluster you bought won’t work in your 1992 F150 because it’ll cause your alternator not to charge. What I tell everyone is that if you want to do this swap make sure you get the same year gauge cluster as your truck. Sorry to give you the bad news, but I would recommend you return the gauge cluster you bought off eBay and get one that matches the year as your truck. Hope that answers all your questions about this swap. If you do however have any more questions to ask I’m here to help. Take care👍 I’ve also linked an article down below that helps explain this gauge cluster swap and is a great resource to have: www.ford-trucks.com/articles/installing-an-oem-tachometer-in-a-1992-1996-f-150-or-bronco/

Otherwise the truck won’t charge properly. As long as it isn’t one from a diesel any gauge cluster will work (F-150,F-250,F-350, and even one’s out of a Ford Bronco). Hope that helps. Hi Jacob. I’m not quite sure if this would work for the 83-87 year trucks. I made this video specifically for the 92-97 year fords and have no experience with the 83-87 Fords. Since I’ve never worked on one I can only guess. The best advice I can give is to go to your local U-Pull It and pull a tachometer gauge cluster and see if it has the same wiring hook ups in your existing truck. As you know those generation of vehicles weren’t computerized so you would also have to see if it’s even possible to take the existing odometer that’s currently in your truck and place it into the tach. cluster. I hope that helps😀👍!

Hi Baron, great question! I’m not aware of any such chart that would list when the gauge clusters changed. Lifesaver, quick question, would swapping in a whole new cluster with the tach work? Or do you need to keep the OG speedo for the mileage?
@ydocproductions5593
@ydocproductions5593 3 года назад
Hi, You could swap in a whole new cluster with a tachometer, but the great thing about this swap is that the speedometer sections are universal so you can keep the same mileage on your truck. Not only is keeping the original speedometer the legal thing to do so the mileage is correct when you decide to sell it in the future, but also you keep the same PSOM (Programmable Speed Odometer Module) and wouldn’t have to recalibrate it if you put in a new one. So in my opinion it’s worth keeping the original Speedometer section when you do this swap. Hope all that made sense and helps. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask😀👍 Down below I’ve linked an article which has helped out many people who are about to take on this swap: www.ford-trucks.com/articles/installing-an-oem-tachometer-in-a-1992-1996-f-150-or-bronco/

4.9 I6's will run at 3k rpm for a lifetime. Originally designed as a tractor motor, the older Ford I6 runs at 3k for peak combination of efficiency, torque and horsepower. That idea carried over into the 4.9 I6. The only real wear on the lower end of the I6 occurs in the top 90% of the powerband. Keep the pedal below that + good oil maintenance and the lower end can easily last 500k+. Easily. It wasn't broke so they didn't fix it.

The 4.9l is a great engine. One of the best engines ford ever produced. Wish they still had it around in modern vehicles.

I put a 66,000 mile 2001 Lincoln Town Car complete harness / dash cluster - 4.6 & AOD & stock column in a 1940 Ford - can you guys tell me what donor dash & tachometer I need to do this swap ??? Thanks for any help - also I understand - I heard the Town Car power steering pump needs to be switched out to a Mustang or F-150 power steering pump - anybody know which 1 ?????

Question My truck has the same thing, 460 with no tachometer, is the odometer screen serviceable? The screen in mine is very... faded? Only other way I can think to describe it is when you put a magnet to an old tv and it distorts the picture. Can't see the milage

I know exactly what your talking about. That’s a fairly common problem with those trucks. I’m not sure exactly why it happens, however I have no idea how to fix/service that. I’m not saying it’s impossible to fix, but I’m willing to bet the money it would take to fix it isn’t worth it. Wish I had a better solution for ya.

Hi Slade, I haven’t done a swap on the 1987-1991 ford trucks so I’m not too versed on it. I think the process is similar to the 92-1997 OBS ford trucks however. That being said I would look at your local salvage yard or eBay for one. One thing I tell everyone that wants to do this swap in their 92-97 trucks is to make sure you get a gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck otherwise it might not charge properly. Again I don’t know if that applies to your generation of truck but better safe than sorry. Hope that helps👍

My ? Does it matter which speedo section you use? For the swap or are the speedo /odometer the same in both. I would like to keep the proper odometer reading.

Hi, the speedometer/odometer is the same throughout, so you can keep the original odometer and correct miles on your truck. I have to warn you though. You have to make absolutely sure that the gauge cluster you buy is the same year as your truck, otherwise your truck might not charge properly. Good luck with your truck👍

Now one thing that wasn't mentioned and im not sure if it is accurate but if it is its important is that you have to get a cluster for the engine that your truck has so 6 cyl or 8 cyl, the size doesn't matter but number of cylinders does
@ydocproductions5593
@ydocproductions5593 11 месяцев назад
I’ve heard that too, however I don’t think it matters wether it’s a 6cyl or 8cyl but what DOES matter is wether it’s a gas or diesel gauge cluster. Also the gauge cluster has to be the same year as your truck otherwise it won’t charge properly.

Not too shabby! Ford & Chevy trucks of the '90s had a lot of factory pre-wired options. If you're looking for factory service manuals & wiring diagrams, check out www.faxonautolit.com They have manuals for every manufacturer there is. Happy hunting for your next project!

I’ll certainly be checking out that website cause those Chilton/Haynes manuals you get at the auto parts store aren’t worth crap🤣. I’m searching every day for a new project so hopefully one comes my way soon. Fingers crossed🤞

@@ydocproductions5593 you won't be disappointed with them! There's more information in them, than you'd expect. The wiring diagram book for my '93 Chevy pickup, shows every schematic for every option available for that year. It has correct wire colors, what pigtails were used, where it's plugged in at, etc. If you ever need AC Delco or FoMoCo pigtail connector part numbers, let me know. I've got the charts for those too.

@ydocproductions5593
@ydocproductions5593 3 года назад
That is correct. The gauge cluster without a tach has a different plastic molding and less light bulbs than the gauge cluster that originally have a tach. Your gonna have to find a tach that is the same year as your vehicle in order to do this modification. Hope this helps😀👍.

Will this work with the 94 e350 idi diesel?
@ydocproductions5593
@ydocproductions5593 3 месяца назад
Hi, I never have worked on the e-series of vans and so I don’t know exactly but the principal would be the same. You would have to get a guage cluster out of a e series van that has a factory tach. That same gauge cluster would have to be a diesel gauge cluster. The gas and diesel gauge clusters are NOT interchangeable. Lastly that same gauge cluster would have to be one that’s the same year as your van otherwise the vehicle won’t charge properly. As long as it meets all that criteria it just might work, but no promises/guarantees because I don’t know if the writing would work as well. Hope that helps

I have a 96 f150, and I snagged a instrument cluster out of a 95. It was too good a price to pass up, but I’d really like to use it in my truck. Are there any resources out there on the exact differences between the two? I’m hoping there’s some way of modifying the 95 cluster to work in the 96. It might work as is. My truck is dated 08/95, and the cluster I got says A061095, which I’m guessing is august 6, 1995. Might have to bite the bullet and just pull the cluster out of the truck and compare them
@ydocproductions5593
@ydocproductions5593 3 года назад
Hi Colin, no modifications would be needed to swap in the cluster you bought. It sounds like the 2 gauge cluster you have are so close enough in year that it would work just fine. I linked an article down below that does a really good job of not only explaining how to do the swap step by step, but also explaining how Ford changed the wiring of the gauge clusters throughout the production of the OBS trucks. I hope it answers any questions or concerns you might have.😀👍 www.ford-trucks.com/articles/installing-an-oem-tachometer-in-a-1992-1996-f-150-or-bronco/
