Hey Justin, I did a fill in gig for an artist who had you do the guitar on his album, and man I had a great time breaking down your parts on his record, which led me to subscribing to your channel. Super useful content for working guitarists, I really hope it blows up man. Cheers from Austin.
Hey Justin! That song has got that funky tone! So cool how you do the voicings of the chord progression. Normally, not what I like musically but that is just laid back and cool sounding! Thanks for sharing your mindset into songs that may be out of peoples normal comfort zones! What a cool song!!!😮
Love getting to see a different side of your playing here. Not that I didn’t know you could play just about anything, but fun to see/hear. Love this style of playing. I’m a sucker for 80s r and b/funk.
Nothing like a beautiful warm clean tone with some chorus. I am definitely still more of an edge of breakup guy but the clean tone such as in this video is killer. The single notes slightly muted are very inspiring.
(1) Yes, Kip Fox is an awesome vocalist and musician. Your work with him is really tasteful, and I'm trying to get my band to cover "Let Me Count The Ways", for one thing. (2) Thanks for this video that demos your playing over his song and how it fits the purpose. I know that a lot of your new subscribers are loving the gear-talk . . . I'm constantly going back to your earlier videos to try and emulate the playing skills. It's what brought me here, and will keep me here. (3) Your specific use of interval-speak when talking about the melodies and progressions is appreciated. :) Cheers.
I started experimenting with these tones a couple years back , thanks to a Boss CS-3 and recently began incorporating them into live play for certain songs.. Now I have ideas on how to use it more, by laying back and doing less. Underneath your instruction and demonstration, there is a wealth of unspoken ideas in each session video Not sure I express what I am trying to say. Thanks Justin,. Your approaches may not be for everyone, but for this crusty old country hippie, they work,
the Fearless Flyers live in Europe show is probably the best performance i've ever seen or heard. incredible live performance [cory wong, mark littieri, nate smith, joe dart]. i especially like the baritone parts that littieri and playing. it's all great, but signed sealed and delivered is a great, ripping tune. great sound!
Can’t tell which position you are on - for me, with this type of part I lean heavily on Nile Rodgers. I grab a strat, go to the middle position and plug direct into the board. Compress with a 1176 and LA2A. Would love to know what your pickup selection was and your signal chain. It’s a great track - and that bass line is just crazy-good. Thanks for sharing this J. I’m loving this channel more every day. 🙏
I’m on what I call position 4 (middle + bridge pickups), although I know a lot of players call that position 2. Signal chain is Senn Strat, CE-1, Mercury7, Sarge
Great video man, I really enjoyed it! Been watching your stuff from the early days and I think you make some of the best guitar education content online. Just had a listen to a few of the tracks on that album and it is excellent. I would definitely love to see some links to finished works in future. (...and more of that rhythm section! Really tight!)
You are such an amazing session guitarist! BTW, Paul Jackson, Jr. took over for Ray Parker, Jr. as first call funk session guitarist in LA after Patrice Rushen gave him some breaks. Great song! They sure did bury your parts in the final mix! Hope you get support on The Fish and other CCM stations.
Agreed. Went to see the Uberjam band at the Jazz Cafe in London specifically to check out Avi. They kicked off with Acidhead and when Avi started his funky rhythm part he got a big cheer and a round applause.
Justin Nice to see you are not a one man band and give credit to the other band mates. That is missing today. Also nice goofing around. Really enjoyed that chord progression.
yeh, sick bass and drums. but love the laid back guitar and keys. there's so much space in the song, making it sound so pro, which obviously it would with the caliber of guys playing.
Is there a compressor on that funky guitar? :-) kidding....I had to!! That was fun! One other cats name to throw in the funk guitar mix is New York player Carl Burnett. Check out his Life Before Midi release from a few years back.
Hi justin. I'm a relative new subscriber to your channel, so forgive me if this has been adressed in other videos you have put up. But, I'm looking at your monitors. They look rather DIY'ed (and I don't mean that in a negative way, cause they look pretty cool), so I'm curious what you can tell us about them. Are they DIY'ed (by you), if so, are there plans avaiable, or where they designed and built by somone local to Nashville? That out of the way, I was off course drawn to your channel beacuse of it's guitar related content and what you talk about being a sessions player. Good stuff man.
These are prototypes from a new company that has not launched yet. The set I paid for is slightly different and is due to be finished sometime soon. I’ll have more info once the company properly launches.
@@JustinOstranderAs a follow up - why did you choose the EHX / what do you prefer about it vs JJ, tung sol...etc if you have tried others? Really respect your opinion and am currently looking for new tubes for my 67 deluxe.
CE1, you say? Very nice!…Embarrassing confession time… Back in 1989 as a cash-strapped 20 year old guitarist, I was keen to get a (relatively) new-fangled DD-3 delay pedal. I found a secondhand one in the classifieds for $150. When I met the seller and offered him $130, he wouldn’t accept it, but offered: “I have this REALLY ANCIENT chorus pedal that I don’t want - You can have both for $200”. I agreed…. So yes, I bought a CE-1 for $50!… Now, here’s the embarrassing part: I used the CE-1 for a couple of years, but eventually it quit working. Fast forward to 93 and I had to move interstate. I found my old, non-functional CE-1 in the cupboard and thought “Well, it’s no good to me like this, and I can’t afford to get it repaired”… So yes, I threw my CE-1 IN THE BIN! To quote H.Simpson “D’oh!”
