A simple and straight forward tutorial that covers all the mechanical aspects. Two things that would improver the value. A parts list and links to parts. Show the bays active in a raid setup.
I'd like to thank you as well. I just did this exact job, but only had instructions for the cage, not the expansion card. I assumed the card was just a plugin, but via your video I learned you need to move the existing drives to the card and cable the card to the controller. Thanks!
Hey I know this is a while past the last comment, but its good to know your video completely helped me to understand how i'm going to add drives and expander card, thank you very much....
Thanks for this. I've been given a HP Proliant DL380 G7 with a single CPU, 48 Gb RAM and eight 2.5" drive bays. I have an extra controller and cable so I might try to put four x 3.5 drive bays (2.5" SAS drives are too expensive).
Yes! Thank you SO much! I was totally stuck, and you helped me get past a fundamental misunderstanding. I assumed the expander card communicated through the PCI slot.. and I should leave existing cabling in place, and just add a cable connecting the new (second) cage to the expander card. I didn't realize the expander needed to get connected to the existing CONTROLLER. Also my drive cage and expander came with eight different sets of cables... and I was having trouble figuring out which one to use. As soon as you got to the part about "UNPLUG your existing cables from original cage to the controller" my mental light bulb turned on. Ah Ha!! Glory be. Thanks so much!
Next video from you I hope has better audio and also shows a successful boot-up and perhaps also how the disks are configured (There are lots of options, JBOD, RAIDxx, Windows Storage, StableBit Drivepool and probably a bunch more other options). People who spend their time watching from start to finish sort of expect seeing the stuff actually working.
Hi, Could you please let me know what is the Part no of the Mini SAS Cable which is used to connect in between P440ar/2G FIO Controller & 12Gb SAS Expander Card?
Asaduzzaman Asad Not sure if you found the info you required but apparently the SAS expander isn't compatible with the P440ar but only the P440. Unless you can tell me otherwise?? Just had to backtrack my install as the server wouldn't boot with the ar and expander
Thanks for the info, question, any risk to the original (cage 1) raid array when you add the second drive cage and new drives? We don't want to loose the data/config on the original drives. Thanks
Hey guys, i found this video and had the same Problem. We have a Server with onboard RAID Card and now we have the need to expand the Server with another Disk Cage. We buyd the HPE 12G SAS Expander Card and installed them. After a bit of try and error it works now without a RAID loose or any kind of error. I used the same Cable as shown in the video but we used a P440ar expander card. so the was no two seperate short cables from the onboard card to the expander card. but the was a other cable with straight connectors. they are labled with port 3 and 4 on the PCI side and Port 1 and 2 on the onboard card. And now its working.
