I want to tell you thanks for the content I'm planning on shooting my first short video ever and there's so much I'm having to learn just to shoot my first small video all the way from Camara selection to lighting to knowing what side of the face to shoot from to Transitions to sound effects to sound choices for editing to other equipment. I'm taking my time with this video to see if I can at least keep individuals engaged and if I can do that then I'll have accomplished something amazing and for me that's someone watching it until the end.

You can also create 'space' with EQ. Because of how sound pressure levels work, the highs tend to fall off the farther you move away from the source so you can boost the bass on the sound and apply a low pass filter. For subjects closer, boost up the highs a bit to accentuate the proximity. It's fascinating stuff haha

If we are talking about open spaces, I think it's vice versa. You can test it out by recording something close to the recorder, then, the low frequencies increase, if sound is farther, recorders can only catch high frequencies. It's different if we record/hear a sound that comes from a closed space, in that case, the volume decreases and most of the frequencies that can pass thru walls are low. It all has to do with the distance and obstacles between the sound source and the receiver.

Sound design is 70% of a video in my opinion. Human brains process sound differently than visuals and adding good sound design with stereo can rescue almost any crappy footage. Sound can pull people into the video like nothing else. Sound evokes emotion and memories. Everybody has that one song, right? The whole existence of ASMR videos should tell you how important sound can be.

I'm actually working on a video idea that is blank. Just audio. There was a 911 documentary for Cncb that aired years ago and they did this for a 90 second portion I believe. It was when a news crew filming the buildings got stuck in the crashing ruble and enveloped with thick dust and smoke--- they couldn't see, but you could hear what was happening. Frightening and powerful scene it created just with sounds. Check it out if you have a chance. The name escapes me.

Aside from the knowledge you're sharing, the skills you're teaching, what's really fresh is that you takes us with you on your journey to learn. You show us that you are "weak" just like us creatives with impostor syndrome and whatnot, and show us that it's just one step away. From some stuff that you're saying in your videos, I can't fathom what it took you to let go of those things that held you back, but I definitely get the feeling. Kudos man, great spirit, you improve the world.

Freaking love this! Sound design has been one of my biggest challenges to learn. It's like wine, but for video. I'm starting to try harder with sound design but my videos are all from inside my garage woodworking shop where I go from using really loud tools like saws, to quiet sounds like sanding or paintbrush strokes. Trying to balance those out is a real challenge. Anyway great video as always and definitely one I'll be coming back to a few more times. Thanks!

Adrián Díaz in fairness you can argue that for video fidelity as well. People are using Arri and Red cinema cameras amongst others and people view it on 1080p or less and 6” or less screens that don’t even cover 80% of the gamut. Let alone something like HDR or proper luminosity levels. And definitely far from a nice projection on a 100’ screen. People don’t really get to appreciate most of the work these craftsmen put in.

That being said I hate people watching movies , etc... in smartphones, I mean, you cant appreciate quality: crazy contrast, small screen, meh colors, awful sound...

Yeah... You make them a high quality video or photo, and they watch it on their CRT or old LCD monitors with completely washed out colors and terrible resolution... Oh, it hurts so much! That's why I do my best to show off my work on my Super OLED tablet screen and then I send them the files :))

A couple things so people understand them. Impulses are a measurement of a space that helps you more realistically recreate the characteristics of it. Impulse responses are also applied to other types of modelling, like guitar cabinets. Adding reverb is easy to overdo, so make sure you try and use the same kind of reverb so all your effects are in the same virtual space with varying amounts applied. In audio recording software you generally put the reverb on an aux send (or bus) and then control how much of different dry signals are sent to it, and control the whole amount with a fader. Another note about low frequencies and reverb: be careful when working with anything in stereo as this can cause phase issues. It can also really muddy your mix. The thing you should really take away from observing what Josh has done is how subtle he is with all these things, which is the mark of good sound design.

The main reason, I do lots of corporate PSA's for the Gov here in Central CA, and on the side a lot of local commercials and roll for artists..and YOUR videos are not just informative, but inspiring and incredibly helpful. My first use of those effects was at '98 using Jet audio. A great player with unimaginable amount of BUGS XD. i used it Not for music composition but for listening. The shoe sounds like leather and the elbow pads are not leather does it matter or can you use a more of a cotton or sythedic material? I have been using my sound Recorder to record cars wind kids at the playground ect.

Love the video as always Josh. Just something to keep an eye on for next time: a good soundstage needs to have variation in width as well as pan, and ideally both should be handled in a way that obeys the rules of the "microphone" from which the video was captured. So for example, the guy with his boombox is several meters away, yet the music is at full stereo width, which makes it sound like it's really close and surrounding us. Ideally it should be mono or the stereo width should be narrow to reflect the fact that it's coming from a specific direction. For ambient (non-directional sound) this isn't something to worry about so much. Other than that, great to see a well made video on sound!

I’m a sound guy trying to understand video. Been sound designing for years, hands down the best DAW to sound design would be Ableton Live. If you want mind blowing resolution and clarity, if you have the budget go with Prism Sound for AD/DA converters. DPA mics would be mics of choice. You’re Welcome.

Interesting, i'm in sound as well and use Logic and Pro Tools. How does Ableton handle big sized video files?

A cool thing I realised after being a music producer using logic for 10 years and moving on to FCXP I realised they sync up with each other and all the projects and plug ins integrate. My tip for making a lot of sounds sounding organic and smooth is using a gate or a tremolo affect, makes like a compression on the sound!
