Ryan, loved the video for the scenery, as far as the message.. Harley compensators are prone to failure because they are designed for STOCK Motorcycles, as soon as you start adding significant power upgrades you start running into issues with component failure. Compensators are "as wear" items which means they are a maintenance item, plain and simple There are several companies out there that make compensator upgrades for Harley engines from evo's to M8's, its just good practice that when you upgrade anything from stage 2 and up.. one should be looking at compensator upgrades because you WILL blow it up if its stock and the motor isnt. thats just facts. great finish to the 12 days behind bars and look forward to the next one, Cheers from the Great White North.

Wow, good stuff! I am nowhere mechanically inclined as most, but watch enough content from those that are, to get me thinking about bullet-proofing my bike from various stock items for out on the remote open dusty trail. I don’t need a hot rod built, but compensator, upgraded clutch, oil pump, upgraded Feuling one piece rods, etc…. Im all for. Doesn’t matter how likely it is or isn’t going to fail, I like to insure it’s less likely after I upgrade. Whatever brings me peace of mind frees me up to enjoy the ride that much more.

Compensator, Oil Pump, Transmission are all weak links on H-D M8 platform. If you’re hearing clanking up front, or you’re having a more so than usual difficulty getting the bike in neutral, your compensator is going. The Dark Horse Man-o-War is a GREAT option. The new Screaming Eagle Oil Pump is an improved version of the S&S pump. It will lubricate, and just as importantly scavenge your oil in the front engine compartment up to 34-50% better. If you have a 2017-2019 M8 this is a must do upgrade in my opinion. The stock H-D transmission is known to have wear issues. Particularly with the 3rd Gear. If you feel slipping when you throttle, time to fix the transmission. It can actually be cheaper to do a full replacement than do a rebuild. But I will say from experience, good luck getting parts.

Good info for my future. I just bought my 2022 RG Limited and will upgrade it in the future. It’s nice to hear from riders like yourself who have had good luck with upgrades. I too know nothing about the M8 engine and appreciate your advise.

Thanks, I try to do as much service to my SGS myself. For instance an oil change….Amsoil has a complete kit, oils, filter, orings. It will save ya about 150$. law Abiding Biker has great vids for do it yourselfers. Just bought a FLOW reusable oil filter, will drop engine temp 10°. Etc,etc….. Thanks for the vid. always enjoy the content. ✌🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Man what an awesome video. I too have a stage 2 on my 2015 Ultra Limited. The first thing I did was replace the horrible compensator with the DarkHorse also. I bet the new CVO, $50K, 120 anniversary 2023 come with the horrible same old tired compensator.

Get rid of the cam, don't dump the clutch, don't speed shift, no burnouts, and keep your engine stock, without riding your bike hard, and you won't have compensator problems. It's really simple, show some mechanical sympathy and you'll eliminate these kinds of problems on your trips. You go up into the higher numbers on the F*ck Around / Find out graph, and you're sure to create your own problems. I own a M8 107 CI HD Sport Glide. 100% stock. I will never worry about compensator failure, because I'm non abusive in my riding. Riding is fun, breaking down is not fun. I ride in a manner so that I don't break down.

For some, keeping the bike bone stock is an option they enjoy. For me, I like my torque cam and I wouldn't want to get rid of the stage two. To each their own. Yes, there is a risk to upgrading the bike...its a risk I am willing to take and I am just suggesting options to combat future problems.

[sarcasm] The good thing is that Harley-Davidson has strategically built dealerships in the locations which have the most breakdowns. Don't worry though, I hear the motorcycles are getting better reliability since they have closed a few dealerships that have not had many breakdowns in that location,..... [/sarcasm] Seriously though... all motorcycles have come a long way from their beginnings. Take care Ryan, ride safe.

Do you notice anymore vibration compared to the stock set up comp? I hear so many good and bad things about that comp? I keep thinking just change out the ramp to a star one. Not sure yet, any comparison would be greatly appreciated.

There is more vibration with this set up. The star ramp is also a good option if you are looking for a comp upgrade. I do love the feel of the vibration though.

I did a 131ci Stage IV on my Fat Boy. I did replace the compensator for a forged one. Looking back at my mechanical engineering classes, I do wonder if the stock compensator is designed to fail in order to prevent a more critical failure elsewhere. I could not find any information on this, one way or the other.

I would agree. And for those who keep the bike 100% stock, it’s probably low risk. But, as soon as you start adding power, they say these things fail. If they fail when you’re out on a trip, apparently it’s a total breakdown. Be safe G and thanks for watching. 🤙🏻

Is that compensator something I should be worried about when looking at m8 bikes? I currently have a vstar 950 and I'm looking to sell it and upgrade to a twin cam or m8, but I've heard about twin cam chain tensionors, and m8 compensators and oil pumps. Is the compensator something I should swap out as soon as I buy an m8 bike or only if it shows signs that it needs it (and what are they)?
@FullThrottleHOG
@FullThrottleHOG Год назад
I wouldn't say you have to change it right away. This is simply something you can do to have ease of mind. As mentioned in the video, some will go the life of the engine without problems. With the M8, it has just been known to fail when you start upgrading the engine. IE: Stage 2 and above. The M8 motors of freaking outstanding. Thanks for watching.

@@FullThrottleHOG ok so it's more like an oil pump upgrade when doing a cam. Once the power level starts going up, it's something you have to be mindful of, but don't have to worry about it as much if you're staying stock. Thanks man, I appreciate it

I love your channel, great job with your cinematic photography. The whole Harley thing I don’t get. Love the sound style and paint. BUT…….I just can’t grasp the money you guys waste on these bikes. The oil change cost, the recommended service intervals, in which still under warranty, and they still charge you for. One of you’re earlier videos you needed an oil change. But you kept going to different dealers, and a result not getting it done when you needed it. Why not find an independent shop, and get it done? Or change it yourself? I get it that you might not be mechanically inclined, but why not do it yourself and learn what they are doing for an astronomical price? You do realize This is all part of a business plan of Harley to keep steeling your money. When I bought my goldwing, I asked when to come back, they said 32,000 miles and we’ll check the valves, but they probably won’t need it. An 8 year extended warranty on my Honda was only 850.00 . Not bragging about a goldwing just an example. If you don’t mind, and can afford the Harley tax, more power to you. There is a reason, that the extended warranty on a Harley is what, 5-6 thousand? And you do the upgrades from Harley on their motor which they sell you, and it leads to more costly upgrades? Yup, there is a reliability issue with Harley. It’s never ending with that brand. And in todays time, they’re still overheating . Again I think they look and sound cool, best paint jobs hands down, but I think they just rape their customers.
@FullThrottleHOG
@FullThrottleHOG Год назад
First, let me start by saying...Thank you for watching the channel as I do greatly appreciate it. I hear the concern about the price of owning a Harley and here are my thoughts. When you purchase a Harley, you should know right away what you're getting into. Yes, there might be cheaper options out there...And yes, you might have a bike that can go 30k without a checkup. But in my experience, I've road Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and now Harley. Each of them have their advantages and disadvantages. Ironically, the only bike that has ever left me stranded was a Honda. I still love the brand, they make great bikes. My extended service plan has already saved me THOUSANDS of dollars. It didn't cost $5k as you mentioned...It was around the 2400 mark. Now, because I do love all brands of motorcycles, and have had multiple brands, I will say this with confidence...You can find a bike with better value right off the lot. You can find a brand that doesn't require the same maintenance cost. You can find a brand that needs no changes for the life of the bike. But, its still not a Harley. Just my opinion on the matter. At the end of the day, ride what makes you happy and never mind the rest of the noise. This particular Road Glide, which has 52k miles in 3 years, is the best bike that I've ever owned.

I have an odd problem with my 2022 Street Bob. I took it in to get its 1K service. After the 1K service it now will occasionally go into neutral when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Its been back to the dealership twice now and they are not sure what the problem is. Should I be concerned about this?

I think that was a typo, he meant $9 million $ Bogans into maintaining all his HD's. If you think HD is bad, try BMW Motorrad and the price of their parts $600 for a pair of new valve cover gaskets on a R18. Of course the dealership wants you to use new, ones, but the old ones are reusable and don't leak. And your valve clearances probably don't need checking.
