Rapidly becoming one of my favorite channels. Thanks. From a guy who got a total of 3 peppers from 6 plants last season.

Thank you! 3 peppers and 6 tomato plants is 9 more plants than almost anyone else is growing. Having a small garden is having a great garden. It doesn't have to be enormous. And you can always expand overtime if you want more. That's the beauty of gardening. You're in total control.

Don't worry if it's your first season with the chilli plants. Once they are established next summer they should produce better so long as you Fertilise well with phosphorus and potassium (usually a flowering and fruiting fertiliser)

Do you mean the bone meal? To make bone meal, they source bones from the meat packing industry. Then, they clean them, steam them, dry them and grind them into a fine powder. Bones contain enormous levels of minerals, as well as a lot of phosphorus and calcium. These nutrients lead to strong root development and overall healthy plants.

Would these fertilizers work for container gardening, or do they need bacteria and worms to decompose? I use grow bags, and 5 gallon foodsafe buckets. Thanks.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 4 месяца назад
Yes, they will work in a container garden. However, I share your concern that due to the lack of a microbiome when compared to true soil in earth, I would not expect them to break down as quickly unless the containers are very, very large. Containers will benefit more from water soluble fertilizers added to the plants, like fish fertilizer and something like Jack's 20-20-20 or another water soluble fertilizer you mix into a watering can. When I grow in containers, I combine all these different things and the plants thrive.

After last frost. Look up your last frost date for your zip code, and when that arrives, check your 2 week forecast. If there is no threat of frost or freeze (no temps below, say, 42), plant.

I’ve seen videos where people make their own bone meal. Probably a good idea for those that want a guaranteed grass fed or pasture raised organic bonemeal. 🐄 🐓 🐖 Not any cheaper than store bought, unless you buy a certain cut of meat or a whole chicken to cook with.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 4 месяца назад
I don't see how that would be a good use of time. The amount of bones it would take to make a few pounds of bone meal would be enormous, and the time and the equipment it would take would also be enormous. A 3 lb bag of bone meal is $9. You'd have to own a giant processing plant to get any sort of value for your time and efforts. I can't recommend someone spend their efforts on something so difficult and time consuming when the product is very affordable.
@anitahernandez1207
@anitahernandez1207 4 месяца назад
@@2MinuteGardenTips I’ve never made it before. I’ve only seen the videos and in those videos, they were not making enough to equal the same amount as a purchased bag. When someone uses bonemeal, they’re not using the entire bag all at once anyway. It’s something someone would do, as part of their regular cooking routine. Someone that would prefer bonemeal from grass fed or pasture raised animals. In that sense, the only expense is their time, cleaning the bones and drying them out in a low temp oven or dehydrator, if they have one.

I would think the bone meal decomposition process would draw nutrients from the plant to aide in the decomposition process? Is that not the case?
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 4 месяца назад
No. The soil biology decomposes the bone meal. You have to feed the soil to keep the biology active. The more you feed your soil, the more microbiology.

@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 4 месяца назад
I have not had that problem. If you have that issue, you can try applying it first thing in the morning and water it in very well, or apply it right before rainy weather so it gets watered in very deeply while animals are taking cover and not out and about. But, ultimately, I recommend fencing.
@Warrior-In-the-Garden
@Warrior-In-the-Garden 4 месяца назад
Yes!!!!! Since it takes a while to break down I am thinking about applying it a month or so before planting, raking it in lightly and covering with compost. Since the digging last time was soon after planting I am hoping they will have their fun and realize there is nothing good there and move on.

I'm wondering why you choose to put in money and buy products when you can make very nutrient rich Aerated Compost Teas for almost no money. Is there a reason why you make that decision?
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 4 месяца назад
Compost is poor in phosphorus and calcium unless you are specifically adding bones and things to it. I do not compost animal products. Furthermore, the amount I would have to make would be enormous. It just isn’t realistic for a garden and yard my size. I don’t think these things work well to scale when you work full time. You’d have to quit your job to tend to all these amendments. A bag of bone meal is $9 and will last most gardeners all season or longer.
@Jordy.Sticky
@Jordy.Sticky 4 месяца назад
@@2MinuteGardenTips thanks a lot for this response but have you ever looked into making comfrey teas? They contain a lot of phosphorus and could be used to boost your compost/soil with the needed nutrients. And I don't know if you eat a lot of eggs but they can be crushed to powder and used in teas or straight on the soil as well. I don't compost animal products either but I plan on burning my animal waste to ashes so that I could use it in amending the soil or compost
@Jordy.Sticky
@Jordy.Sticky 4 месяца назад
Maybe it's always good to keep in mind that there are other ways of adding those nutrients and minerals. Worst case scenario: imagine yourself that you could not buy those things any more , what would you do in that situation? Maybe it would be interesting to share your thoughts in a short video for the rest to learn from it as well
