"Im a heroin addict, but i identify as an alcoholic for the sake of fellowship at my place of recovery"....... felt that shit deeply. I cant tell you how many times i had folks at AA tell me essentially that i wasnt welcome to share in my recovery with them unless i would pretend my addiction was to alcohol. Always rubbed me so wrong...

@mindsigh4

@@tshirtfactory07 _some_ people in NA act the same, they prefer u identify as an addict at "their'' meetings, but AA started with one rule "...the honest desire to stop drinking.." so since AA was founded first, that foundation applies across the board, so the NA rule would be "...an honest desire to stop using drugs..." & since alcohol is just another drug, seems way stupid to me how someone does or doesn't identify themselves, i would go to the nearest meeting that i could get myself to , there was one guy who would introduce himself as "hey, i'm John, & i'm a dope fiend" & that's how it was, who cares, you made it to a meeting, WELCOME, so i say it's just a stupid ego game if someone has a problem with how u introduce urself, & i'd tell them i'm here to get & stay sober, or get & stay clean, *what're you here for?*

I'm grateful to this man for sharing this story which was told so perfectly. blessings, and to anyone who suffers.

John, you have me in tears....you give me hope for my son. I wish I could talk to you. I'm losing him. He was clean for 3 yrs. while on Drug Court. One week after he graduated, he relapsed. He's so miserable. He's so ashamed, he hates heroin so very much. He cries because he doesn't understand why he can't be clean again. He asks me "Why Mom, why can't I stop this damn heroin when I know that when I was clean my life became the best it ever was....if I know this, then why don't I have that strength again that I had back then to quit?" I don't know what to tell him John.

GILMOUR KEIRS Methadone was as hard for me as dope. I've been clean this time for 2 years. I was put on methadone 4 years ago, used it for 2 years, my insurance stopped covering it, so I quit taking it. Within 3 days, I bought dope. Relapsed for 24 hours, and went into treatment to actually deal with my issues, get tools, and counseling. That's when I finally got better. I handled the addiction instead of the drug, and it changed my life. I'm so happy to see your story wasn't mine and you were able to stop methadone, and stay sober. Be proud of yourself. Most don't get the chance to be sober.

Hi from Scotland. I'm only 20mins into your video and know that I'll be sharing it on FB at the end. It's so rare to see a positive story. I think spreading stories like this will help immensely because it will help change the attitudes of non-addicts. We need to see the possibility in people as people. Seeing the end result is going to help change attitudes, encourage people to help and that can only be a good thing.

I smoked meth morning noon and all night for 6 years and it was my last trip to jail that I finally made the decision to quit. I had 2 years in Arizona's states prison to think it over. Followed by 2 more years in the dumpiest halfway house Mesa AZ has to offer! Getting a job through the halfway house and having that purpose helps so much. Now I make 22/hour I got 12 people under me its great. I feel SO much better. I must say I am very thankful I never tried heroin I would probably be dead today. You really are one of the few who pulled out of this terrible mess you're setting the example.

I am so happy for your family, they have you healthy in their lives. I spend each day with my brother, unfortunately, he is in an urn on my dresser. He had stopped using heroin for 6 months, living with our mom he was starting to look healthy again. One day he went on a jog...My mom called me and said my brother had been missing for three days. Then I got the call from my mom, crying...she said detectives were in her home, they were there to tell her that her son was found dead in a ditch behind her home, only yards away from her bedroom window. He had needles in his pocket and heroin. The pain our family went through was unbareable. It still hurts. My mom was never the same. It changed all of us. My mom passed a year ago. Now I take care of my brothers ashes. Anyone reading this who is still using any type of drug. Please know that you are loved. Please know that you effect the ones that love you.

Thank you John for being so transparent. Me too, me too my friend. Thank God for change, and thank God for recovery and for the people who have come before us. Keep on keeping on.

Hey don't criticize unless you know peoples full story.You can't presume she didn't/couldn't or did an that he didn't want to accept any help just by her short comment.Did you not listen to the video,we all have lives an they can be complex but never criticize or question people as you did. I hope if you are an addict you stay clean,always try to be positive. Strength an best wishes to you.

12 step groups aren't for everyone but if you've tried everything, want to quit but can't stop using drugs or drinking, going to meetings is at least worth a try. Don't just go once either, keep going even if you're still in the process of using, the only requirement is a DESIRE to stop using! Try actually going frequently and meeting people. I do 12 step meetings around 10 times a month and I don't get as much out of it as others do but it's definitely got helpful tips to live by even if you don't have a drug or alcohol problem. Even if working the steps hasn't made a huge, miraculous change in my life, it's helped me to live a better life and it's shown my family I'm not that same person I was on heroin and crack. I even have multiple friends in recovery I chill with outside of meetings, I never thought I'd be hanging out with other people from a group who are sober but I got lucky and found a great group with people my age that I can relate to.
