I'm sure they are getting them at least partially as sponsorship benefits and the difference is probably being paid for by the people getting the servers. Also, don't worry about it. This isn't something these guys are doing just for fun, they're installing them out of need. This is a business and when you run a business you get the things that business needs or you close your doors.

Oh and Oprah and Ellen probably have never given their audiences a single penny out of their own pocket. It's always Target gift cards, or Shutterfly donations, or Walmart this, etc... smart people use advertisers to give things away. ;)

The compression is handled automatically on the camera, if I remember my RED. Also, I'm pretty sure it's lossy compression, but 8:1 is considered to be very good.

That's unlikely. The status quo is anywhere from 512GB to 2TB but 1TB is a good middle ground for the status quo for consumer hardware that isn't particularly low end or high end. You really think it'll be 150 times more than that 10 years from now? What was it 10 years ago? It would need to be at most 8GB for your prediction to have any validity. But that's not even close, it was way more than that.

Bruh, it's so cheap these days. Go out and get yourself a nice 500GB SSD or something.

Now you're just overdoing it. 500GB SSDs are still in the $150-250 range. But a nice 1-2TB HDD will only run you $50-100, combined with a small $50 120GB SSD for booting.

I just finished building myself my second 8.6 TB raid-5 server for $150, my first one @ 3.4 TB was getting a little full.
